Citrus Posted June 24, 2017 Author Posted June 24, 2017 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Episode 2 - Singing in the Gay Judges' Critiques Aciid said... Quote I’d like to say as a general statement that it’s very exciting to see this season unfold. I liked all 3 of the entries and thought they all had their strong points. So congrats on all of the talent. Team Melanoma Let me start off by saying that your setup was really nice. The graphic contributions really standout, and I like how it was all formatted together. (Despite Chanel adding extra spoiler tags). The spotify shot was a great idea. Another aspect I really enjoyed was how you guys decided to divide the song. I liked that you made of the challenge an actual girl group and each person had their part, personality, fashion and involvement described on an actual performance. Again I praise you guys for using gifs to actually give us some sort of visual of what you imagined yourself doing. Sometimes it’s too much just reading a wall of text. I think the actual song is where you guys had the most faults (which technically is the most important part of the challenge). But that has to do more with each person’s contributions to the lyrics. The theme of it is kinda safe in my eyes. Y’all went for the obvious route, it lacks uniqueness and it was pretty predictable to write about bottoms. It has comedic elements, but they weren’t taken to where they needed to be. Tippi’s verse is the best part of the song, and I think it has the best songwriting. It flows well and it’s quite a slay so congrats to you. I think Gladys stands in the same ground as Tippi, you really did that and I’m proud of what you did here. Love the “Move aside ladies, Gladys on the scene, Men line up around the block, to enter my vajeen” line. Melanoma had a cute rap/bridge, but at least in my eyes it has some issues with how it flows here and there. It starts off great until the chocolate line, and then it ends abruptly I feel. The chorus is also not good to me, I like the pre chorus but the chorus itself could have had some rework done. *****’s had a similar problem to Melanoma’s, where it fizzled at the end, this time with forced rhyming in my opinion; liked the initial part. Priscilla’s had the most problems to me in terms of songrwrtting and the salami/macaroni thing is a mess. Anyway, overall good job. Nothing was too horrible. But I do recommend for future challenges to work better as a team. As I stated I liked how y’all divided the song and each person had their part, but it does feel like everyone was doing their own thing instead of working as a whole. Team Noah First thing I’m going to say is that visually this is a mess. It’s really badly formatted, and it lacks taste everywhere which is kinda funny to me. It’s not like super important for it to look good but I mean if y’all are in a team I expect it to have some investment in visuals. Bad fonts everywhere, the rainbows mismatching a kii. So just consider that next time. Since I’m already talking about appearance let me just say that the looks are a mess too. I understand the decade thing, but basically the only ones that I think were alright were Alena’s and Colleen to an extent. (This is not that important anyway just wanted to comment on it). The cover is okay-ish, but definitely the worst of the 3 groups. Now for the actual song I was blown away. Noah’s talent is amazing, and I liked how people contributed to make an actual song happen. Like what kind of slay is this? Bravo. I’m not like the best judge for songwriting, I actually see it as something I’m not very good at. But from what I can tell, and how it reads and flows, it’s really well done. You can see that the team worked on it together and it wasn’t disjointed at all. I also very much like your topic, it kinda touched me ddd. One thing people struggle with in this competition is learning when you can be serious and when not to be. This challenge allowed you guys to take both routes, and I’m glad you chose the one that you did. And even then, it still had comedic aspects to it to keep it fun. My favorite song of the three no doubt. The write up for the performance was excellent too. Just an overall well done entry and I applaud all of you. Team Lola The intro for the entry was cute and unique to you guys and I really liked that. I also enjoyed the write up for the performance a lot. I think it was my favorite of the three. It made me chuckle a few times and I had a lot of fun reading it, so congrats on that. The cover is nice, I mean what else can I say I think the song itself is okay and written well. I like this intimate theme of love, but I feel like you guys could have expanded on it a bit more. It feels just kinda there. The song isn’t comedic enough, not personal either and it’s not telling like a story. So while it’s not bad, I think it could have been taken further and I know the people in this group could have done that. Seems like this team had the most issues so maybe it has to do with that. A lot of contradictions, so putting the blame on someone will be hard. Chanel said... Quote Team Good TV Goddamn if Team Good TV didn't stay true to that name. Honestly, I'll say that you guys were my favorite thing about this week in that you broat BOATLOADS of entertainment in the sheer nonsensical disaster that was the way you guys "collaborated". It's perhaps one of my favorite things about ADR in general, seeing the kiis that are brought out, and it's why these group challenges are life. But, the issue remains that I don't think you guys were the best; while leaps and bounds were made to promote and execute this entire production, things like the iTunes banner or the fantasy of your guys' performance, worked wonders (though the use of gifs was rather distracting to me), and yet, the song itself, inherintely the most important thing about this challenge, fell flat. I hear enough about bottoming as a concept every time I talk to MoonChild. I generally felt the theme choice was rather poor. Being a bottom isn't something to be ashamed of; I haven't heard people bottom shaming (especially on this site) in eons, I was expecting something a little more empowering, but seeing as you guys were a team of hilarity, I guess it's rather fitting. I don't think it was the strongest writing that could exist from the majority of you (I think only Gladys had any word play or rhyming that I was actually impressed by, though I found Tippi's ball sass and Noma coming in like Aja on CLAT more entertaining). The chorus was perhaps the weakest part of the song, oddly enough, when that should be the part that resonates the most with anyone. But, I will say that you guys were not the worst this week, at least, in my eyes, which makes the fact that the way you guys worked together was so discombobulating even more confusing. Who would've thought a team that was a complete disaster turned out to be so middling?Individual notes:Tippi and Noma had my favorite outfits out of the five of you. I'm a personal fan of leather, and bondage- or kink-inspired fashion, so Noma's was my favorite at first, and anyone who mentions the most beautiful woman of all time, Hedy Lamarr, gets an instant SHOOT for me, so props to Tippi for finally showing a non-tacky way to do a peacock-inspired look.***** Yentl, please keep up whatever you're doing. Your in-character commentary cracks me up every ****ing time and I never fail to be entertained.Meanwhile, Priscilla, I feel you were rather the weak link in the group this week; you easily had the least-impressive verse that felt far more off-putting than grossly entertaining, and by far the most basic look of the week in some Mom Dad & Me dress. I know you from other games, and you're far wittier than you're allowing yourself to be thus far. Finally, Gladys, I live for RuVeals almost as much as I live for sleeveless turtlenecks; I thought having a green necklace was almost bizarre out of all the color choices, but I still rather liked it. I won't critique you're drawing, though, because it's probably better than any sketches I could even come up with. Keep it up, darling. Team Lola's Cholas n something is very, very wrong if the cover of your single is better than the actual song. I don't mean that just because I've been desperately trying to e-**** Stone for months, but let's not lie and say we don't all think her looks are one of the highlights of the season (I have no doubt that Aciid has her top 3 for the week if not #1 based on this single cover alone). In a similar note as to Team Melanoma, I think your guys' presentation was rather enjoyable; the introduction was my favorite part because you all served up some gabby queen morning talk show kiis. But, at the end of the day, this challenge was about writing pride-related songs, and besides the fact that this served Rhymezone-abusing second grader haikus, I barely got any semblance of pride from the song itself. How many times did y'all say "Free?" How many times has FREE posted in this thread? How many times will Stone ignore my requests for nudes? How many times will I be left with so many questions? Hearing the way you guys worked together was also quite a riot (Completely aside from Canela going from Sasha Velour-nonexistent to Tatianna's "The judges aren't seeing that Tyra's a complete bitch" in her callout of the entire team), but I'm left seriously wondering why multiple people seemed to be left out of participating? I don't think the blame is left entirely on Lola or anyone else that actually showed contribution-- when there are 15 girls in a competition, you need to fight to make sure that you're seen; in season one's writing challenge, a girl who made no contributions to her group's main presentation rewrote the song all by herself, and those of you whining that you weren't able to do anything could've done something or literally anything to show that you were trying.Individual notes:Frankly, I don't have any personal notes for many of you, just to follow the advice and notes I laid out above. As expected, though, I will talk about your outfits!Lola-- A Candyland TOOT from me with this. I understand what you were doing layering the icing cage over a simple dress, but I feel the flap accents off of it, while still relatively withheld, prevent it from being simple enough to create the full effect. Still delicious, though.Canela-- Thank you for not doing the exact same parrot dress that two others (Including one on your own team!!) did, and while I despise yellow as a color because it reminds me of Drip's awful watersports fetish, it was a wise choice to have the skirt be that when so little yellow was present in the upper half.Stone-- Easily my favorite outfit out of you five. Toot. Shoot. Eve Saint Laurence was found DEAD. I already hae a weakness for caped jackets, but something so regal and so Babylonian in grandeur is fantastic.Primarina-- While McQueen/Galliano's rainbow parrot dress is still a great dress, it's perhaps almost instinct to find something like this and call it indicative of pride. I don't think it relates to you by any means, and it doesn't show me anything from you that I would hope to see; there's no identity in this other than it's multi-colored so it's a go-to example of a pride look. It feels disappointing.Camille-- I generally am not a fan of extensive makeup used over fashion (hence why I think Kim Chi is a flop runway girl), but this is competent and relevant enough. I think it's also wonderful you were able to incorporate your identity as some lost small-town girl here in this environment, or how you feel at home, through an alien-inspired look. Well-done. Moonchild said... Quote Team Melanoma: I liked this. I questioned the subject matter at first, but I was sold by the end. Y’all made a choice and ran with it, and I respect that. The performance was gay as hell, which is exactly what this challenge called for. Also, this group had the best single cover and performance outfits. For the negatives, let’s start with the formatting. This didn’t affect your score, but the formatting was annoying to sift through. I get that you didn’t want to send a block of text, but a picture, two spoiler boxes and five .gifs with each verse was too much. Next time, send a text-only version along with it. Overall, this group had some of the weaker lyrics of the challenge (I docked a point for salami/macaroni alone). Some sections of the song just felt unnecessary and the direction, though appropriate for the challenge, felt predictable. Priscilla: From the individual entries, it seems like your verse was your main contribution. Unfortunately, your verse was bad. An opening rap verse really needs to knock and yours didn’t. The rhymes were weak (salami/macaroni, sis) and the verse wasn’t interesting. I know it’s hard to convey flow with just written lyrics, but I didn’t get much of it from your verse. I don’t see how your runway look connects with pride at all. It’s a wedding dress with rainbow eye makeup and a rainbow tinge on the end of your dress. Your looks should be able to stand on their own, but I encourage y’all to write a brief description of your looks so I can at least get a sense of your vision. Tippi: You definitely had the best verse, and I commend you for getting **** done. You need to hit the ground running in team challenges, and it looks like you did that for your team. Your verse was snappy, fun, fit the song and also gave us a bit of your drag persona. Good job. Your runway is a slay, and you know that. And you’re right that the end result matters more than how you got there. However, I’d like to see you customize your looks a bit more. Your entrance look was one picture and this is two. They’re both great, but I’d like to see how you’d make an outfit from scratch, so to speak. Whøre: Like Priscilla, it seems that your main contribution was your verse, but your verse just wasn’t that good. You had some really odd rhymes and word choices going on that felt out of place (thee, for starters). I’m not sure if you’re trying to maintain the ESL persona here, but the verse was just awkward. I screamed at the rainbow anal beads. It do take nerve, so I gave you a point there. The pearl look is great on its own. It gives me Ziegfield Folly teas, so I use. That said using pearls because the Philippines are the pearl of the Pacific is a stretch. Your write-ups are hilarious but I’d find a way to focus your drag persona if you intend to stay for more than a few weeks. Gladys: Your verse was fun and it looks like you contributed your fair share of ideas. I like the vajeen rhyme and the “stonewalls” line in particular. I don’t have many complaints, so you did your job. Hand-drawing your looks can go south really fast, but I like both of your looks! I definitely get a drag version of 5H from your performance look and your post-reveal look is gorg. I’m looking forward to your future runways. Melanoma: You kept a team of strong personalities together, so congratulations on that alone. Every group needs a steady hand, and it looks like you did that. I liked your bridge, but I don’t think the intro or outro were necessary. Your graphic work slayed, too, but please never format another entry like this again. I love the eyebrow and lip cutouts in your look. Your runway is an interesting take on the theme and you sell it well. This is a solid 4. There isn’t much to clock but I’m not blown away either. I think it just needs a little more oomph. Team Noah: Team Lola: Your interview and performance are cute and funny, but the song is weak. It’s neither here nor there and it’s too generic pop to read as a pride song. It’s like if Paula Abdul released a pride song but her label toned it down because they didn’t want it to be too out there. I know sometimes group challenges just don’t work out, but the song itself could’ve been a lot stronger. Also, those performance looks are ****ed. Lola: Group challenges can suck, I know, but the other two teams managed to get it together so that leaves y’all. It feels like you didn’t adapt quickly enough as the challenge unfolded. If it’s clear within a few days that two of your team members might be dead weight, you need to make something work without them. You managed to get something turned in, though, and it seems like you did the most besides Canela. On the bright side, I absolutely love your runway look. Candyland was my favorite board game as a kid, n, and I love how you represented your trans pride. This is stunning and I can’t wait to see more. Canela: Good job, sis. You had a less than ideal team and you did your best and turned it out. You had some of my favorite parts of the entry (which makes sense, considering you apparently did 70% of it). The performance outfits were tragic but I forgive you. You did well. Luxe! Looking like a million bucks. Stone: It seems like your biggest contribution was in brainstorming. It’s good to brainstorm but you need to produce some tangible results, too, because you faded into the background. Considering how much Canela did, I think you could’ve done more to help with the final product. I do like your Greek pride look. I would do away with the earrings and the multicolored bracelet, but it’s nice otherwise. It’s cool to see you honor you girls honor your heritage. Primarina: All you did was the recording? Recordings are nice but it didn’t add much to your entry. Your runway didn’t add much to your entry, either. Camille: You know going into a team challenge that you'll be judged individually on your ability to stand out. If you sit passively and wait to be asked, you're going to be left behind. Take initiative and make something happen so you're safe regardless of how your team does. Your runway, however, is great. It’s a unique take on the challenge and you showed us part of your drag persona, too. Bring this slayage to every challenge. Citrus said... Quote Team Melanoma Melanoma – Your role as team leader may have had you putting in more work, but your verses/written contributions weren’t particularly impressive. It’s just very cheesy. Regardless, I commend you for your graphics work and getting this all together. I really enjoy your runway. It’s a lil Shea rainbow in that it doesn’t COMPLETELY fit, but I’m willing to allow it. Good job. Tippi – The best part of this season is seeing everyone else react to working with you. You may be angling for a villain edit, but at least you’re not bad. Your verse and chorus were clunky but you had some standout lines like “plowed and proud” and “limp wrist for days”. Your outfit borders gaudy, but luckily I have awful taste and love tackiness. Priscilla – My favorite part of your performance was you coming out of a prolapsed Pikachu. Unfortunately, the verse itself is rather forgettable. The rhyming/rhythm just wasn’t there to make it read better. You had some good ideas in it (like the snatch rhymes) that just needed to be edited a tad to make them POP as I read. I like the runway, but it does come off a little basic. Iss juss tooll favric. Whoor – Not ask who’ll be servicing thee. The way you went from inconherent to weird Shakespearian has me waving my fan a tad. “Coz your semen nourishes” is a DISGUSTING line and I’m screaming at it. Not you shading Carrie Messiah like that, way to ruveal how she got the crown. I really enjoyed your verse in the way that the judges enjoyed Yara Sofia simply because they couldn’t understand her. I love your look, it’s very cute. Not sure the hair should be down like that, but whatever. Gladys – Men line up round the block to enter my vajeen, what a SLAY. Be the fat to my fem is a weaker line (because this is a fat-shaming game sorry), but your verse is cute and pops off. The way you said more in 4 lines than all of your teammates did in like 8. I use. I’m dead @ “I didn’t want to go too overboard” so you wore a ****ing dresser. I love the reveal and concept behind it! Good job henny. Team Lola's Cholas Lola – Your outfit is a SHOOT! Now that the positive is out of the way, onto the performance. Good on your for providing receipts for your team members who didn’t contribute much. Although you did do a large chunk of the work (writing the song), it wasn’t particularly good. The humor that was sorta present in your write up was completely absent in the song. It felt lifeless, something I usually only say about you in bed. It was not a hit. I know you were mad at your team, but it isn’t a cute look to submit without them. That being said, if they were truly as awful as y’all described, then I understand being fed up. Canela – The outfit is another gay bird, but at least yours is the best. Your write up of how the challenge went was 1000x more entertaining than your team entry, but we all know there were some mitigating factors. I can’t fault you for much of it since you ended up shouldering most of the work. I will say though, it’s disconcerting to hear you talk about how badly you wanted to quit (and would’ve without Drip). Especially because we gave you a chance before and you literally quit after you won. Just know that you aren’t getting a third chance if you drop out this time. Stone – Screaming at all your contributions having to do with body, what a skank. If your group was the whole competition, you’d be a solid third. I don’t have much to say because your greasy fingerprints are only really on a few things. The look is good tho. Primarina – That recording was a choice. I’m not critiquing your singing voice, moreso the fact that you thought THAT was what the team entry needed. Not any editing of the lyrics, not performance outfits, no, we needed a smooth elevator music remix. The look was, again, done before and done better by other girls. Overall, you just didn’t give enough to this challenge and what you did present was, frankly, unimpressive. Camille – Your alien look is gorgeous, and I love it. Your performance in the challenge was also alien, because you weren’t there. I’m not saying you didn’t look up outfits or research or whatever, but the fact is, you could spend 100 hours looking up wigs and heels but it doesn’t matter if you don’t send them in or tell anybody. Nobody cares how perfect your makeup is if you never leave the bathroom, honey. I hope you did well on your finals.
