mercurialworld Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) The phrase "eat the rich" has been used a lot in popular culture recently, and it's a stark reminder of the income inequality that plagues much of the world. We often tend to forget, however, that while we might think of these phrases as an opportunity to call out the truly wealthy and powerful, that those we idolize—like musicians, actors, and other celebrities—are often extremely wealthy and privileged themselves. Some fans spend thousands of dollars on concert tickets, album bundles, and merchandise for their favorite stars without ever considering the enormous wealth gap. So the question remains, does the phrase "eat the rich" have a limit, or will even those we idolize be held accountable for their privilege? Edited August 31, 2023 by mercurialworld
Saintlor Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Yes it only applies to people richer than themselves that they're jealous of for being richer Everybody browsing this website is richer than the majority of the world 1 2 5 1
popmusicisdead Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 the limit is when ATRLer's fave pop girls become billionaires. suddenly it's a good thing 1 7
Stankonia Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Janet is off limit. Everyone else is on the menu.
BrokenMachine Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Well, you do the math to where's the limit
Pop Art Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 I feel like this sentiment is generally reserved for billionaires, so with that in mind, ATRL's favorite artists are pretty much excluded from the narrative by default except for Rihanna (and perhaps soon to be Taylor). But even then, a lot of people will go so far as say this is mostly about those whose wealth is in the tens of billions, so Rih might actually be safe for now.
Mitsouko Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Only if I disagree with how they spend their money. If they have bad taste and keep buying stupid **** then it’s a wrap I fear
Veckatimest Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) I don't think it should be taken as a totalizing commentary on what individuals do with their wealth or how much they specifically have but more of a hyperbolic statement on how such wealth shouldn't exist Dragging only specific pop girls for their wealth is a pretty empty sentiment when the change needs to be widespread and systemic Edited August 31, 2023 by Veckatimest 1
poki Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Kylie and Madonna are spared From what I understand, the phrase is meant to be directed towards CEOs of massive, massive companies. Fossil fuel industry in particular. 1
poki Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Our faves make CRUMBS compared to what certain key individuals make in this world with just 1/99th of the effort our faves put in. 2
Bosque Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) It’s like when you criticize an artist for being problematic only if you don’t like them. People on this forum will go on about how problematic Kanye West, Matty Healy, R Kelly or random rock stars are, but never stop listening to their faves even when they do something problematic. They will also only talk about eat the rich when it comes to Elon Musk or other republicans, not Oprah or Taylor Swift or Beyoncé/Jay-Z Edited August 31, 2023 by Dephira 1
PoisonPill Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 It sounds like something you'd hear from the mouth of a privileged teenager who picked up casual socialism on a summer abroad program. 3
ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted August 31, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted August 31, 2023 Yes, the limit is Elon Musk cause I don't wanna eat him cause he's ugly and his body is probably mostly fatty tissue. 2
spree Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 personally i feel before going after the billionaires to pay more taxes, they should tax churches. If they want all this freedom of religious beliefs tied into laws, then churches need to pay taxes. Simple as that.
Danny789 Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 When people say “Eat the rich” it’s more about those whose wealth is tied to corporations, industries and politicians that work together to block policy that would help us like Universal Healthcare, livable wages, free college then sit on their yachts while there is literally children starving in the richest country of all time.
Sabrina Carpenter Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) yes some people think “eat the rich” means their upper class neighbour who just bought a new Tesla your fave’s wealth isn’t even half of the world’s most truly wealthy people and the term should be reserved for that 1% Edited August 31, 2023 by Sabrina Carpenter

Also literally this. Anyone who’s worked hard for their money (Taylor, Miley, Britney, Xtina, basically most women from the last decade that are singers) doesn’t deserve to be killed.
Cain Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Our faves don’t control the world or cause major global issues like the true 0.001% at the top, it’s mostly about them
