Even before the release she said it wasn't the lead. She explained on various interviews that it's an old song she likes and wanted to put out. It was never intended to be on the next record, let alone the lead.

this is very, very likely. Single soon is now top 10 on pop radio, but only generating 5 million streams weekly. They need to increase this and the song would easily return to the top 20 of hot 100 after the album bombs.

I kinda think this was supposed to be lead. She only changed the narrative for the announcement because they saw the backlash when the snippets leaked.

 

I hope the remix elevates the song and let's have the Fred Again collab in late november/early December just in time for NYE
