You're moving to New York City? Are you rich? If not, good luck. It's very dangerous in the areas that you can (barely) afford if not rich and you'll be living in a overpriced dump or a studio bedroom.

You should live somewhere affordable outside of the city and just go to the city for work or whenever you need to work. That's what I'd do.

If you're rich tho, have fun!

Not Miss Indiana lecturing us about the dangers of the big city. Pack it up Jason Aldean.

Imfao it's definitely not. I've lived here for 5 years after commuting from NJ for 10 and I was attacked numerous times by people of mental illness or personal issues while commuting to work. they literally have started stealing cars in the Bronx again near Pelham Bay.

to the author of the thread a few tips I have learned:

1.) get EVERYTHING in writing. whether it be from your landlord speaking about money, rental updates, etc. In Brooklyn, they have been illegally raising the rent and lying about apartments being available before tenants have moved out. I had to take my landlord to court because he was trying to extort myself and my roommate for $7,500 in Bushwick.

2.) ensure you know where your exits are on the train. NYC is overrun with homeless people who are mentally unstable as well as substance users. they will walk the train and harass you and you may not feel comfortable staying on that car.

3.) express trains mean they skip certain stops. local trains stop at every station on the subway line. download the MTA App, they usually have subway updates quicker than anyone else. also always plan ahead, look to see your route before you actually get on the train. uptown means going towards Harlem, The Bronx. downtown means Brooklyn, and Queens.

4.) do not obstruct the flow of the sidewalk. you will get pushed and/or cussed out.

5.) load your metro card beforehand. ensure you have it on your phone and and have apple pay available.

6.) make friends but be careful, people here like to prey on transplants. do not trust many people here either.

7.) download both Uber and Lyft and do not take a taxi.

8.) bring hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE you go. SERIOUSLY NYC is filthy and incredibly unsanitary. people cough on the train and don't cover their mouths, the MTA doesn't always clean the train and I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a homeless person  sleeping in the seats on the train. some mornings you'll see rats in the trash and on the sidewalk before the garbage men pick it up. it also smells awful in the summer.

9.) Trader Joe's is your best friend. I worked there for 5 years and it is very cheap product but its sometimes quality. Whole Foods is for rich people but they have better product at a better quality.

10.) budget 3 months ahead. the MTA just raised the fare to $2.90 and the trains are still messed up. I sat on the 6 for 45 minutes today. sometimes you'll want to go out for a random drink or a restaurant with friends. it gets really expensive so to truly enjoy all of NYC, please budget.

Lol as a native NYer is always interesting hearing people not from NYC talk about how dangerous it is when half the time y’all just lack social awareness.

abd taking the taxi is cheaper if you’re traveling within Manhattan because the base fair is cheaper than Uber.

You should check out Williamsburg (Brooklyn). Super fun and nice area!

Why are you moving?

Move out of the way. Can't stand slow ass walkers or people who suddenly just stop walking while a bunch of people are behind them.

I guess we missed the part where I was commuting and staying in NYC 50% of the time because of work.  being a native has nothing to do with it. I was attacked at work on 6th Ave. and taking a taxi in manhattan is still very expensive.

I didn’t miss that part, you’re not a native NYer is my point.

and for the taxi is just depends on where you’re going but in my experience it’s cheaper or around the same. The good thing about Uber is that you know the price beforehand
