Pop Art Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I was talking with my bf last night about how consumer tech used to be so exciting in the 2000s/early 2010s because there was so much innovation coupled with lowering prices happening, making more and new tech available to the average consumer. However, from around the mid 2010s on, it sort of feels like everything has stalled more and more and we're seeing less and less major innovation hit the market. With this in mind, what do you think, if anything, will be the next big consumer tech innovation that will take the world by storm like the PC, iPhone, etcetera did?
Fruity Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I mean the typical answer is the metaverse but I’m not sure if anyone actually believes it’s going to happen. 1
venuss Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 The recent semiconductor breakthrough (if replicable) will probably be the beginning of new and exciting tech in all fields. Guess we'll have to wait.
AMIT Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 if anything this is a good thing, we need to consume less, let's please take a break and actually see and engage with the world around us (before it bursts into flames) and stop mindlessly gobbling up whatever hot item we really don't need is up next for the capitalists to sell us.

Honestly, tea. I know I made this thread because it is exciting to see innovation, but I agree we as a society need to consume less. 1
Archetype Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Foldables with super flexible and durable glass screens. Once that happens, every phone manufacturer is going to shift in that direction (esp Apple), prices will fall, and we’ll see the masses adopt foldable as the new norm.
Illuminati Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 We're still quite a long time away from VR becoming a huge thing. I don't believe in metaverse (at least not in the way Meta sees it) because it would ONLY work if it was enforced like Zoom, where you use it not because you want to but because you have to. And companies generally prefer to keep everyone shackled in offices. I think the biggest innovations happen when they find a problem that technology can fix but we kinda already have a smart solution for everything. People will be trying to insert AI into everything, so idk expect AI powered Samsung fridges and talking light bulbs.
Bosque Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) ChatGPT is a super exciting consumer tech innovation yall should make the most of it to reduce your workload before your employer catches on and deletes your job altogether. i don’t believe in VR/Metaverse at all because we are now used to using our phones 6 hours a day, which is just a hundred times more convenient. Until VR glasses are as easy to use and wear as regular sunglasses, it’s not going to happen. Edited August 9, 2023 by Dephira

ScorpiosGroove Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 not these cheap looking, ugly flip phones i can tell you that
MoonGoodandHappy Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 the late 2000s was a peak in innovation. there will be another peak maybe in 2050.
Starshine Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 AR Glasses. Basically the Apple Vision in 10 years, not in the bulky form factor.

These things have existed for a decade now, it's not new and nobody wants to look like that. Stop buying into apple marketing OT: foldables/flipables might become the norm in phones.
Leptine Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Like it has been said already, it's a good thing that tech wise things are stalling for social and enviromental reasons, there's too much already, outside of the medical field where that is necessary to help people, I wouldn't mind a regression or a long stalling period.
Starshine Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Foldable phones will not and have not been disruptive. That folding display technology is beneficial for other devices. It will have a cute little marketshare in the future, but by the time it catches on... we would have already moved onto the next thing. Mind you Samsung is on their 5th iteration and the entire foldable market can't even see a fraction of the iPhone 14 sales and I'm not even including the Pro models. In the same time frame, iPhones 2007-2011 have sold 300m. Until Apple enters, I don't see it being a thing mainly because most people prefer using their phones one handed and from a use-case/practicality standpoint... there's not a problem that it's solving and are catered to a niche audience. And I don't even see them doing a phone, more like a 20" foldable iPad that can fit your bag.
AvadaKedavra Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) Cheap mass produced VR sets. Albums will in some years-decades be whole VR Experiences. I also feel like Holographic thing will get more common Edited August 9, 2023 by AvadaKedavra
