Why are we here?

Recommended Posts

I'm going through a lot mentally at the moment questioning so many things in life. Trying to find a real purpose that sticks but can't help feeling melancholic all the time and just overall sad about everything in this world.

Why are we here?

Are we alone in this whole universe? If so, why because it's freaking huge ?

Why are we so mean to each other? Why do wars still exist in 2023?

Why are we so selfish? Why do I only want to have sex but not fall in love anymore? Why are we so evil? Are we worth saving?

Maybe this isn't the place.

AI will allow us to have biological immortality this decade

Life will be what you make it

With death being optional, it won't matter why we're here

Life is what you make of it. Sending good vibes. :doublescoop:

If you think about it that way, it's incredible that we do exist at all. The universe is unmeasurably huge. There will always be mean and bad people trying to smother the good. It's just the way it is. Just enjoy your years here

Watch this; it's only 6 minutes and a pretty concise but engaging video. I don't believe in god or the afterlife (I don't rule it out completely, but I don't think either are likely) and this video has been a comfort to me during my existential crises. Hope it will be for you too.

I’d suggest creating more art if your aren’t already, I think that’s the most beautiful thing that separates us from most, practically all species on earth. Our creativity. But even that can be depressing (if it’s not appreciated or valued) Otherwise we’re all just being sucked into the endless cycle that makes us one of the most destructive, most exploitive species on the planet.

I recommend you watch Midnight Gospel on Netflix. It’s a limited series (about 6-8 episodes I believe) that animate over podcast episodes from this guy who brings in spiritual and psychological guests to discuss existentialism, spirituality, etc.

I'm sorry you're going through a lot right now. It's understandable to be sad about the world, there's a lot of awful **** going on. And the fact that we have 24/7 access to technology means we get inundated with it much more frequently than we used to.

Why are we here?

Personally, I don't think there's any particular reason.

I think there's other life out there, but even an advanced civilization that's a few hundred light years away wouldn't know about us yet, nor would we them (assuming they also use/look for electromagnetic radiation signals to find intelligence). And that's not taking into account that the closest life could be in a galaxy billions of lightyears away. It's scary to think about. If it helps, you can think about our existence as the way that the universe gets to try to understand and experience itself. These massive celestial bodies and subatomic particles will exist for far longer than we will, but they never (as far as we know) get to be conscious, understand how they work, or even have the ability to understand anything. As short and as meaningless as our existences appear to be, we at least get to do that.

Accruing power, be it political or economic, is a process that rewards bad behavior. A vast majority of people who get in these positions do so because they have no problem screwing over others to achieve their goals. I wouldn't classify most people like this though. It might help you feel better if you remember that most of the people you're likely to encounter in your day to day life tend to be altruistic.

Some people are selfish for survival, others due to trauma, and others are evil. I don't think everyone is though. A romantic relationship isn't for everyone. And I think most people are worth saving, but it's hard to see then when you're getting inundated with the pure evil and hatred of so many of your fellow humans.

Life is scary, irritating, and (in my opinion) has no intrinsic meaning. The latter at least means that you can make it mean whatever you want (should you want to). It's a cliche to try to enjoy the little things in life, but doing so is so effective in blocking out existential dread at times. Even if it's just for a little bit, immersing yourself in a hobby you enjoy or consuming art that you like can be cathartic. Again, I'm sorry you're not in the best headspace at the moment, and I hope things look up for you in the near and far future.

Meaning and purpose does not exist out there. Humans are the ones that give things meaning and purpose by being alive.

Outside of our minds, there is no meaning.  Human experience is what creates meaning. In other words: the meaning is in ourselves.

To stan your favorite artist and experience life with them in it.

No really I think for every person who exists, someone imagined them. Using our favs as an example, someone or a group of us must have imagined them otherwise can we imagine a world without them? Makes sense?

I guess.. I mean I do have a boring life but I don't think my existential crisis episodes would go away even if I started to do activities to keep my mind busy.

I overthink things way too much. It's awful.

I feel like there isn't a purpose to our lives tbh, but that's liberating if you think about it, you can do whatever you want without thinking if that's what you're supposed to do or not, just do what feels right to you, at the end of the day we're all gonna die and nothing will matter.

You're onto something.

And I'm screwed 100% in that case.

PM is available if you needa talk.

I can relate, earlier this year I was going thru a very pensive time + bad breakup that threw me into a depression (I’m not the expressive type/more like the stronger friend that needs checked on type).

Its easier said than done, but I had to regroup & return to therapy to pick up the pieces of what used to be my life. On a positive note ur seeking help – its best to spend time surrounding yourself around positive ppl (this site is impacted with negativity) and also take on some fun tasks/hobbies to keep ur mind right. So far its been working for me.

I meant I'm here because my life is boring. But I agree with you.

I live with a lot of anxiety and depression and this site is one of the few things that takes me away from my demons even for a few moments.

I draw a lot, and it does help.
