Pope Francis ended a five-day trip to Portugal on Sunday with a massive open-air Mass for an estimated 1.5 million people who camped out overnight on a vast field to attend the grand finale of the World Youth Day festival.

Many of the mainly young people in Tejo Park in the Portuguese capital Lisbon had camped out overnight to attend the open-air Mass on Sunday.

WYD is an event for young people organized by the Catholic Church that was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and it happens every three to four years in a different country.

South Korea won the bid to host the 2027 World Youth Day.

Well, the whole point of this is to be in the presence of the Pope, which is such a blatant marketing tactic aimed for insanely traditional Roman Catholic families. My parents had to pay for his "placement" for the event, which was an inordinate amount of money, but none of that pays for the actual trip to the hosting country; they still had to pay for his plane ticket (it took place in Sydney that year), arrange/pay for his home stay family, and other costs like pocket money.

It was a **** ton of money :rip: yet they still sent him because they were insane Catholics and thought it'd be an honour. Like this event literally takes advantage of families like mine for a quick lil cash grab.

This was in 2008. I remember being invited to the 2011 in Madrid but couldn’t go.
Did you brother at least enjoyed it?

I think he enjoyed visiting Australia. Also, his home stay family were wonderful. They sent him postcards for like years afterwards.

He didn't have much to say about the actual, like, Catholic part of the trip, but he went with a bunch of other kids from our church, so I'm sure they all had fun

In retrospect, I'm 100% sure my parents didn't send me because I was so obviously a British cigarette :ahh:
