cockatoo Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I've noticed from conversations online that Americans don't really use Whatsapp. This is odd to me as it seems it's really popular in most other countries around the world. Does anyone know why this is?
FolkLover1989 Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Around 33% or 1/3rd of the US population uses Iphone. ( this accounts for elderly and children who might not be using phones too) So Whatsapp doesn’t feel that much of need there. In other countries, Android is major player so whatsapp is a need 2 1
sh0ckw4ves Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Tbh, I wish it *wasn’t* so popular. It’s annoying to have to use certain apps for certain friends when surely we can all just iMessage/SMS 1 3 1
LustSpell Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 (edited) Because iPhone addiction. iMessage/SMS is more useful for everyday life Edited July 30, 2023 by LustSpell
Acid Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 The US is the only place someone has asked me for whatsapp. Nobody I know uses it
magazine Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I'm not in the US and I don't use Whatsapp Are we in 2010? Everyone has unlimited sms nowadays, no need to use internet.
Mast Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Basically every Latino in the U.S. has WhatsApp lol. It's how we communicate with family abroad. 1
bad guy Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Unlimited data/text. We can also get service in other countries to iMessage so there’s no point for Americans to have it unless they have family outside North America. 1

Mordecai Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Everyone here in NZ just texts. If we don't text, then we use Messenger instead. I don't know anyone who uses Whatsapp
DamianSolo Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Along with iMessage, apparently, people love using Snapchat instead. Everyone I'm around is constantly communicating through Snap. I hear that little notification sound all throughout the day.

Keter Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 We use iPhone for the most part, which comes with iMessage functionality native to the device. A lot of us aren’t fans of downloading a separate app for what we consider a core function. Combine that with there being multiple messaging app options, you would have to have the same one as your contacts, which could lead to multiple apps for one thing when iMessage does it all automatically. It works in Europe because the bulk of the population uses WhatsApp. Personally, I can’t get passed paying a thousand dollars for a phone that requires a separate third party app for functional messaging.
KnightOfAllRealms Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 How do they send each other's pictures or memes in text??

You can send massive videos and pics in seconds. It’s one of the selling points of having those blue messages. When you see blue, you know you can send some ****!

No phone requires requires another app for messaging. People use it because they can communicate with everyone, everywhere in the world for free. It's as simple as that. 1
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted July 30, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted July 30, 2023 I mostly use WhatsApp for my international friends that use it. Americans otherwise just text or use iMessage. Some Americans will use it or Telegram or whatever for large group chats with people using iPhone and Android.
Lyrica Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Because they don't know about the superior chat app, Telegram. They lost 1
byzantium Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Unlimited texting was available long long before unlimited internet so sms messages are the default.

popmusicisdead Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 it's wild how the US is probably the only country that still primarily uses SMS for messaging. it's giving Japan and fax machines
jaredtbh Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I just recently downloaded WhatsApp just to communicate with my cousin who is traveling throughout Europe (I live in the US) but I never have a need for it when I mainly use iMessage or SMS to communicate via text with people here.
