I was going to ask. I love the Archive so much, but the anxiety of not knowing what is going to happen with it due to WB’s constant corporate changes is too much. Kino Lorber is amazing too 19 minutes ago, bad guy said: Such an irreplaceable time in film. Hitchcock’s film immediately come to mind. Vertigo alone >> Vertigo is my favorite movie of all time!

Kino Lorber is amazing too Vertigo is my favorite movie of all time! I am! Around 550 titles and counting. But I’m not like other physical collectors these days who’ll buy anything; I buy only what I really like, or what I really want to see and think I’ll enjoy. And don’t worry about Warner Archive, they’re fine right now with an ambitious preservation program going on and a steady flow of titles released each month.

We had a grade seven "law/legal system" unit in Social Studies where we all became baby lawyers in court prosecuting or defending a crime in a Disney movie in front of a jury of our peers and the judge (our teacher) , and he was so impressed with how serious we took it that he gave us an entire afternoon off afterwards so we could watch this movie with snacks in class. Great memories and a great movie. 1
Achilles. Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 I love the comedies / screwballs of this era. It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, My Man Godfrey, The Women, The Philadelphia Story, To Be Or Not To Be. Lots of dramatic faves too, of course. All About Eve, Sunset Boulevard, Gaslight, Pygmalion (the source material for My Fair Lady!), To Each His Own, Letter From An Unknown Woman, Suspicion!, Rebecca, How Green Was My Valley, Summertime, Ben Hur, All That Heaven Allows, Rear Window, Singin in the Rain… Need to start delving into international cinema from this period. I’ve basically only seen The Goddess and The Earrings of Madame de… (I bolded titles that I watched for the first time this year).

TaylorNation Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I feel like nowadays Billy Wilder gets so overlooked tbh, his filmography is nowhere near as remembered as Hitchcock when it’s arguably as influential and important 1
brokee Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Started watching movies from this era like last year. I'm happy I did it. watched a lot of Alfred Hitchcock movies which made me interested in Film noir. Gotta watch more comedy movies in that era cause recently watched The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby and It Happened One Night, and some others. Thank you for making this thread @Mitsouko So I can find more recommendations

°ColdFire° Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I've just watched Mildred Pierce the other day. Joan Crawford, her power. The movie has its flaws, but overall, the story is pretty bold and performances are beyond great!
ATRL Moderator Ampersand13 Posted July 24, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted July 24, 2023 Film studies nerd here, just popping in to say I love the history of Hollywood (my favorite sub-period probably being post-war 1946 to the early 60s). Side note: A Streetcar Named Desire is one of my favorite films of all time, Brando and Leigh giving some remarkable performances So many iconic stars, directors, and stories 1
eleganceislearned Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) I love this film era (though I do enjoy New Hollywood era as well though it could be up its own ass sometimes, so many interesting films were made AND seen widely). I used to come in to school the next morning tired because I'd been up watching something on TCM (TCM's month of Oscar was always a rough time). Pre-code stuff was the most intriguing to me. I remember watching Baby Face and it blowing my mind. Barbara Stanwyck's character seducing young John Wayne and then throwing him away like that was awesome, lol (I hate John Wayne). Citizen Kane was hard for me to grasp until later on. I was bored AF watching it at 16, that I feel asleep. Then I watched years later and I liked it. It's weirdIy funny at times too. I remember someone on twitter was comparing him promoting his talentless wife to Kimye, and it was so spot on. DAP Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 I’m gonna keep saying this until I’m on my death but Gone With the Wind is the most boring film I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching and not finishing.

No it is. So many truly fine films from the same year too. Proof that the Oscars been opening their legs for budget not quality since their inception
noonbob Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 hey perfume lover @Mitsouko It's late and my mind is blank, I forgot what your old username was? Wait it was Petty Bolognaise or something right? Anyway I recently watched Double Indemnity and had a blast with it. I really enjoyed it!
