If twitter died, what would be the cultural aftermath?

I've been thinking about this a lot. Even though I personally don't use twitter, its impact on the cultural landscape over the last ten years (and even more so since 2016) has been immense. There are a variety of journalists, breaking news stories, and significant moments in pop culture that have thrived over the years. Even though the site has a negative reputation (worse now with Musk), it has proven to be more reliable than instagram, facebook, and other competitors for information. Twitter has also served as a catalyst for countless social movements over the years.

So what happens when all of this dies? Where do these movements / conversations / people go?

Here is my reaction to the information:

I don't know, I have just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever before. And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. Like, you know, I don't know, it's not just twitter being removed from society, it's like. I don't know, I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense. And so I thought I'd dance, which brings me a lot of happy memories.

TikTok encourages you to show your face and is geared toward people that are conventionally attractive. On the other hand, the lack of anonymity makes people more liable for the things they say and forces them to think carefully before they speak. So I'm kinda torn on if it'd be better.

I don’t think twitter will die, it’s still going and traffic is good.

I think it would have to be and independent alternative

Threads will not replace it because is too vanilla and mark will end up limiting everyone and charge them for reaching their own followers like his is doing in ig and fb.

Tik tok you have to show your face.

It’s definitely a new one

It is kinda a dead platform for celebrities in spite of Elon Musk.

It seems to mirror YT VEVO dominance.

There will always be a new one. Threads works exactly the same way. A bunch of similar ones will start sprouting everywhere. So many options.

Twitter ain't that special.

I myself have twitter that I hardly use,  I get my information from many sources and the world didn't end.

Consuming more information than one can process has done more harm than good, and commenting and replying on the latest catastrophe of the day with 5 word tweet doesn't move the conversation either way, sometimes they just add to the insanity. Maybe a possible demise of Twitter will let us look back at whether immoderate consumption of small bits of information is actually good to society.

I feel like it's already dead? I just deleted the app today because it literally doesn't work but I was on Twitter since 2011 and the engagement isn't anywhere near what it used to be. To be fair to Elon, it had been dropping for years but he came along and drove the app into a ditch. I do think Twitter is important in terms of global news and global events but tbh TikTok stole cultural importance from Twitter a long time ago.

Twitter these days is 15 second OnlyFans clips and right-wing trolls posting racist memes and jokes looking for attention. The app itself is shadow of its former self, there's not rly much left of it tbh.

People will flock to Threads in droves. Everything that references Twitter in media would be seen as being dated. Twitter really isn't above dying, especially with how Musky is running it into the ground, with a seemingly type of ignorant determination.
