Shake It Off is so underserving of this success. Taylor has so many better songs but the GP has spoken i guess

Well, I did specify signature country hit, but I still think Love Story still has a stronger claim to that title than YBWM since it’s ahead in overall consumption/units in the US despite the latter being more streamed overall. Love Story TV is also charting on US Spotify right now while YBWM TV isn’t, so it’s at least marginally ahead in current streams.

It’s honestly surprising to me that anyone thinks YBWM was bigger, if we’re being honest. It just doesn’t feel right.

I fear I just am YBWM stan. I think You Belong With Me is more of a universal one and was even quite popular with straight men I fear.

Tbf even Love Story is very popular with straight men

You can't choose between these 2

I think they did mess up the streams count

Maybe he meant to put 1.65B

Does Pandora counts in on demand streams?

Also I think SIO is big on Amazon Music which is very weird with streams

It's actually difficult to know unless we have breakdown

YBWM feels bigger cause it had become College Football mandatory song in USA. And College Football is massive in US

I often see the bands playing the song

It also was the bigger song on radio at the time, and the bigger music video at the time, and the one nominated for all the awards.

You Belong With Me has always felt bigger than Love Story

Nomination for all the awards has do with the fact that Love Story came up a year earlier and in different tracking of award year

Fearless album blowing up changed the trajectory of her career and then offcourse

The continuous hit singles run

LS - WH - YBWM - Fifteen

Wow , I am getting nostalgic

Shake it Off over her Magnum Opus Love Story? :rip:

All the SIO lashings in here but I think its placement is deserved. It was an important inflection point in her career during which she proved she could be a legitimate pop star.

The fact that Scott Borchetta begged her to put a fiddle or something in it and she said no and then picked it as the lead means she took a huge risk and it paid off 10x over.

I dont think so, they call those streams "programmed"

Most Taylor songs have 40% - 50% streams from the US, if Youtube was included BS should have at least 2 B streams in the US, so I guess it doesn't

Not you still treating Taylor as local. And even then, her YouTube streams particularly are global af, so the US share is much lower than that

LWYMMD won :clap3:

YBWM felt bigger to me

"Shake It Off" really won, we kinda hate to see it, but I was bopping hard back in the day, it's infectiously catchy, none can't deny it, and yes, probably her song with her most universal appeal, not a surprise it's her signature hit in the States.

I am impressed by LWYMMD's stats tho, that is pretty massive, damn.

Who is streaming Calm Down and Me? :rip:

YBWM was massive in the USA.

It wasn't even done half of its chart run and it was the 2nd biggest airplay song of 2009 behind "Love Story"

Never expected YNTCD to be a local smash :deadbanana:

HOW does Blank Space trail SIO so much, that is a whole “Style” sized lead :rip:

Love Story is low compared to YBWM

Good, You Belong With Me is the better song.

YBWM was bigger in USA. Love Story bigger outside US (Asia and Oceania).

Funny i always thought it was the other way around. I live in Belgium and back in 2009 i discovered Taylor for the first time with YBWM, the song was on TV all the time. But Love Story was nowhere to be found.

This doesn’t shock me that much tbh, love story was a much bigger global-success, but ybwm feels like a way bigger American-classic all things considered, especially the video.

It's the damn chorus with those horns. I remember hearing it for the first time in 2014 and I thought "this is the one". This is her signature song. It's just one of those magical melodies that are so simple you're shocked no one came up with it before. And the stupid horn riff Max Martin did that is also genius but so simple.

Where she was super smart was in making pop that still felt pretty 'organic' and analog. It's not a dance-pop single per se. There are synths but they're subtle. The Hey Mickey style beat felt pretty timeless. The horns made it sound like a big band type of song. So while it was pure pop and no longer country, it was still 'real' sounding enough to not totally alienate the country audience. Same thing with Blank Space, it's pop but it's got acoustic guitar, minimalist beat that doesn't feel too computerized. She kept the more overtly pop/disco/synthy stuff like Style to later in the campaign. In a way Reputation is her first true POP pop album with zero attempt to make it sound organic or real instruments or whatever.
