Vermillion Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 That this whole thread has gone on without unpacking the differences culturally and in legislation between the States and elsewhere and why they exist is sad. The behavior of this driver distracts from a necessary conversation which only makes the situation worse. Waiters I tip 20-25% standard in the States depending on how many tasks they're turning to their bus staff unless they're pooling tips which is somewhat gauche to ask (and only down to 15% with especially bad service as most of the time I've had great service but they can't control situations in the kitchen, etc), delivery 15% most of the time but on case-by-case basis. Haircut I've given 15-20%. I've always tried to leave at least $10 when staying at a hotel for housekeeping in the States and it's a case-by-case basis for taxis and valets and I go case-by-case basis as well for whenever I'm traveling outside the States. 1
Material Girl Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 $5 tip for a $20 pizza is a 25% tip lol, the driver overreacted the insufferable europeans in here who don't understand how tipped wages work are annoying tho. you're expected to tip 15-25% because tipped wages are literally less than minimum wage and are designed to be supplemented by customer tips. the US federal minimum for a tipped wage is only $2.13/hour and most states don't pay much more than that. not tipping because you think you shouldn't have to and it should "be the employers job" just makes you an ******* because it ignores reality pretty sure door dash pays even less, pretty much just reimbursing you for the mileage on your car because the workers are considered independent contractors. 1
Katamari Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 Is that bad? I alway tip at least five dollars on my orders
rzal Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 she probably paid extra $10 in fees and yet $5 tip is not enough
