Indiana Jones 5 is bombing hard, 6th $200M movie to flop at the BO this summer

Why did Hollywood think it was a good idea to release a big movie every week? Specially these huge blockbusters ?

The only way for these huge movies to do well is to appeal to everyone, including families. Did they really think that families would be spending 100+ bucks every weekend during the summer?

Better luck next time! It is kinda crazy the the only actual legit hits of the year have been Mario, GotG and Spiderman. I guess John Wick as well.

True. I was referring more to blockbusters but yes I am glad to see the "mid range" movies are finding success.

Now I wonder how the rest of the movies of this year will perform. Honestly I see them all flopping.

I suppose Barbie, Oppenheimer and MI will do good. Maybe Dune?

Mission Impossible will do good but that also has a $290M budget and in cases like this good might not even be enough to break even.

Barbie and Oppenheimer (both with $100M budget) should be more than fine. These 2 also tracking well based on pre-sales.

Not you siding with Hollywood. :rip: People are NOT obligated to part with their hard earned and decreasing in worth money to line rich peoples pockets. If they don’t want to see all these bad movies, that’s perfectly fine. Hollywood isn’t doing **** to help out the average person or actually care about. It’s up to Hollywood to make something mass audiences want to see or cut budgets so niche films can be successful.

What are you talking about? Hollywood has been trying to do that. It is the consumer that has become stupid, and it has statistically been proven. It is the consumers who rushed out in droves over the last 10 years to see superhero movies completely IGNORING anything with story.  Hollywood only supplies what the consumer wants to see. The average consumer doesn’t care about nuisances and great story telling. I am specifically talking about people thinking something is quality because it is successful while forgetting other factors. For example, Mario. Mario was not a good movie. However, some people decided to support that movie as a FU to Disney and “woke culture”. A lot of Disney films are struggling because what is happening in Florida and all across the country with LGBT rights. By your logic, Hollywood will be success again when they get rid of all that and cater to conservatives with safe, boring, white community geared movies. They have been crying that Hollywood is making movies less about family when that is not true. The truth is, the movies are still the same but they feature people that do not look like them aka white.

Elemental is a new IP and it did worse so Hollywood might be confused right now. Meanwhile Zootopia 2, Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 got greenlight

Disney should keep it cute for Frozen 3 when it comes to budget. I doubt it will cross $1B like it's two predecessors. I can see it around 800M mark.

This is absurd and easily contradictable.

Mario is a huge videogame franchise, even the Sonic movie made $500M when it's games barely reach 15% of Mario's sales. And it has weak competition.

TLM is losing money because of international markets not because of US where Disney is confronting the Republicans.

So what? The movie itself was boring and had no plot. It was basically the same old savior story but with Mario. Mario has always been more popular than Sonic.

A lot of people in America boycotted TLM as well.

This could be Mr Ford’s last hurrah moment but y’all let it flopped

Ms Fleabag should stick to comedy.

The last James Bond movie wasn't it either.

To be fair a lot of these films were Covid-produced films that got delayed a lot. But yeah, I still don't see why some just didn't move. September for example will damn near be empty and I get it's traditionally a month that doesn't make a ton of money but a few of these films could've used no competition.

I will watch it twice. First with a friend and later with my dad when he's in town.

And this is why I always say, when The Idol haters who religiously watch every Netflix turd in existence show you who they are: believe them.

I... don't have Netflix. Watched exactly TWO Netflix shows in 2023 (Beef & Glamorous)

The last shows I've watched were Poker Face, Mrs. Davis, Based On A True Story (all Peacock), Severance and Bad Sisters (both on AppleTV)

All 10/10 and shitting on whatever The Weeknds mess is supposed to be.

If you need to keep tabs on my viewing history, make sure your receipts are accurate.

Plus watching the last Indiana Jones ever in the cinema after being a fan of the first ICONIC trilogy is not that crazy. I won't expect a perfect movie, it's more the event of sharing time with my dad on something we both enjoyed watching together. Don't know if you can relate here but I'm looking forward to that.

You enjoy your time, watching the worst HBO Sunday show ever made. And try to not be off-topic the next time.

The thing is nobody asked for a lot of these movies.

I think there are a variety of factors here, ultimately having to do with inflation and overall costs. Whenever I talk to people about going see a movie, whether it's The Flash, The Little Mermaid, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Super Mario Bros. Movie or otherwise, they always say how they're just going to wait for it to be on streaming. These movies are also coming out too closely too each other.

Figure a family of four having to spend roughly $56 on the tickets alone, not even including concessions; and then there's having to get gas—maybe—on top of that. It's no wonder movies are flopping and/or underperforming left and right this summer. A family of four seeing two movies is roughly $112, altogether. Not everything is a vendetta against movie studios, people are just more careful with how they're spending—especially with the cost of goods the way they are. I, myself, have yet to see The Little Mermaid and several other films—though I really want to watch them; but I'm waiting until they're streaming on their respective services, as that's money I'm saving since I already pay for those very services.

Generally speaking, it's not that people don't want to see these films, they just don't want to have to pay for it.

There is no conspiracy about conservatives not watching a movie because of thier politics :deadbanana4:

yhats like a very small percentage of the population. Normal people do not care about that ish. They just watch what they want when they want.

Inflation and streaming is obviously the reason why a majority of these films aren’t performing as they normally would, pre-pandemic. Also having a new blockbuster every week for the entire summer was dumb on hollywoods part.

I feel like people are just waiting for movie to hit streaming services unless it’s a MAJOR movie

What the **** was fresh in Mario :rip: it was just another nostalgia bait mid ass movie that succeeded because it didn't offend anyone politically :rip:  All the other movies were cancelled by conservatives for POC leads or Feminism + were also terrible

bcoz unlike tlm, indiana, transformer or fast. people know what to expect on those stories while mario despite being not your taste is technically a fresh idea.

I would call Little Mermaid and Fast X underperformances not pure flops but I guess considering they both could have been billion dollar pictures I understand their inclusion :michael:

I don't mind franchises and sequels so long as the people creating them tell the stories in a compelling fashion. It is possible to have fulfilling remakes, sequels, and franchises, I just hope Hollywood realizes they can't keep relying on name recognition and IP alone. I think this is where Barbie will become a gold standard of sorts (hopefully.) Taking a beloved property and using it in a creative way and even adding satire/social critique.

The other thing to consider is that Mario did just make over a billion dollars with a rather insipid plot (still enjoyed it though.) So I guess this might have to do more with overcrowding and premium screens than audiences truly being 'over' franchises and whatnot.

The Little Mermaid made zero dollars. Are you for real? It didn’t even break even. Half of its gross goes to the theaters. It’s one of the biggest bombs ever for Disney.
