I live in Aus and thought NZ was the more progressive country It really depends on the areas you visit. Overall I would say most queer people are pretty safe, it just gets sketchy when it comes to PDA or blatant acts of "queerness" (for lack of a better term). I don't think you'd be physically assaulted, but just be prepared for a few verbal insults. If I had to recommend a city for LGBTQ+ people to visit, it would actually be Wellington. Again though, I don't want to make it seem as though Auckland is a bad place. New Zealand for me as a queer individual is generally a comfortable place to live.
Fevesy Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Glasgow has tons of gay-friendly clubs and an artsy scene but I would severely doubt it should be #6 in the list.
Vermillion Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Scientifically, there was no proper (rephrase, thorough enough) data collection to make this list. Anecdotally, the people defending San Francisco here is wild to me. I have a relative and former colleague that live in the city I've visited for years - you can't really try to make a living as ANY person in that city that isn't insanely rich without dealing with the drug and homeless/mental illness problem, including in the old and new gayborhoods. It crossed over into unavoidable around 2014 (and I'm not talking once daily either or from a distance). London Breed's been a disaster as will any corporate thief from the right that will be pushed to replace her, to fix systemic problems no one locally or federally is willing to deal with across the political spectrum. As for New York City, again, affordability for gay people doesn't seem to factor. I guess if you're a good bargain hunter with a assumed roommate situation if you aren't already partnered, fine. But, again, I have two gay friends in the city - one of whom was assaulted in the Bronx and the other who's had slurs and threats shouted at them for years at parks and public transit in Harlem and Manhattan. So so much of this seems...relative.

As NYC is ranked as #1, and the NYC metro area has the largest Muslim population in the Western Hemisphere along with a larger foreign born population, one of the few pluralistic populations as there isn't a racial majority. With all that said, NYC with its large Muslim and Middle Eastern population it wouldn't even be ranked. Girl, Muslims barely make up 2% of NYC. There’s cities in Western Europe where the Muslim population is over 30%.

This is such a dumb statement. As I already mentioned, Islam has nothing to do with Amsterdam not being on the list. Nor does it explain Londons position.

Those socio-economic factors have no direct correlation with the city's friendliness to the LGBTQ+ community and I can't trust a ranking with cities from Brazil, Mexico and India being placed so high compared to European cities. I don't know about other cities but Puerto Vallarta definitely deserves its place
Better Mistakes Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 Always thought London was pretty LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming. Seen plenty of gay couples walking about, holding hands, PDAs etc. and no one bats an eyelid.
