Is stan lingo becoming mainstream?

Recommended Posts

I've seen more and more people using atrl/stan Twitter slang on social media on a regular basis. Is this the case at all?

I've been seeing people outside the stan sphere saying "receipts" for a while now. And then other people ask "where does that come from? What does that even mean?" And then I have to come in and explain that it comes from that one Whitney Houston interview :deadbanana:

Idk, I think it's already mainstream, at least online.

I miss the old days when I would only hear words like "stan" and "shade" from this website tbh. :emofish:

My first day of work in my current job involved me explaining what "tea" was to a straight man because someone said it in a meeting and he didn't understand it.

It's definitely becoming mainstream.

Hearing straights using stan lingo is annoying to me.

...San lingo. Y'all are something else lmao. The absolute irony in the questions being asked. When the people here appropriated the speaking styles and slangs of Black people whether that be women or Queer Black people. Now that y'all are done riding it now it's the rest of the worlds turn. It's how it goes unfortunately.

there's so much lingo I remember seeing on here as early as like 2010 that I never saw on any mainstream social media site til at least 2014 and is now commonplace :toofunny3: stuff like sis, tea, drag, shade etc (all originating from black women/LGBT) was not commonplace internet lingo in the early 2010s

I've heard two or three times phrases like “I'm in my flop era” and “I'm in my Teenage Dream era” (in terms of success in every life direction, I guess).

I was in a conference two days ago and some girl was said ‘slay’ :chick2:

Stan/gay lingo that’s intertwined/originated from AAVE usually becomes mainstream because of how black culture is seen as cool by the masses. More purely gay lingo usually stays in gay/stan circles.

not really ”stan lingo” per se but, i heard two very regular shmegular colleagues say ”ended him” and ”great gowns” the other day and when i chuckled and asked them how they know about these phrases they just answered with TikTok :deadbanana:

yeah it’s been mainstream for a while… I remember in like 2012 hearing someone say stan lingo and it was jarring but it’s the norm nowadays. It’s still kinda cringy but oh well
