Should dems go after conversion therapy?

Something I'm shocked that hasn't been targeted during this wave of grooming panic is gay conversion therapy/camps. The explicit purpose is to change a person's sexual orientation, typically minors. To me, it feels like an obvious way to pursue justice while also refocusing the grooming narrative around larger (typically religious) institutions and the (typically conservative) people that run them. A sweeping movement to shut any currently operating programs down, charge people who have run them and their donors, pursue action against any institutions that have housed them, and install national bans makes a lot of sense to me. Thots?

In some states they already are/have. But yes.

it should be illegal. it's psychologically harmful and doesn't even work. it just teaches people to suppress a part of their identity. i don't understand why it isn't already illegal in the majority of the world. my country banned it fairly recently, and i think it's a huge step towards making a more inclusive, understanding society

Conversion Therapy just became illegal in Portugal. I was shocked to know it was still legal. So definitely, every country should go after it.

yes, absolutely. we should have done this long ago tbh. those people are the real groomers and belong behind bars.

Focusing on things that dont affect most Americans would be a horrible tactic for Democrats to follow. Republicans do this and it is has backfired on them for the last 3 elections. :michael:

We could focus on multiple causes obvi. I just think that this one could be a good way to reframe and delegitimize the main narrative being pushed by Republicans leading into the national election while also being a necessary movement.

Yeah. The UK government has been promising to make it illegal for a while but the TERFs had a meltdown when it included trans conversion therapy :rip:

but most people dont care about this and if Dems make this a centerpiece of their election campaigns it will probably make moderates even less excited about voting in the general election. Republicans are stupid and have made "attacking the gays" the literal main  focus of their campaign and most people just dont care. :deadbanana2:

What about doing politics that improves the world for once instead of only focusing on hollow election tactics?

What makes you think they care? :coffee2:

This is so out of touch ad ghoulish, and almost embarrassing for a queer person to say.

Fun fact - Republican governor Chris Christie in 2013 signed into law a bill banning conversion therapy in New Jersey. it has remained in effect and overcame appeals with SCOTUS even taking no issue with it.

Two years later, a New Jersey jury would decide that conversion therapy *for adults* also was illegal on the basis of violating consumer fraud protections, because you factually cannot make someone un-gay.

Personally Im focused on the student loan forgiveness program that will be determined in the next few weeks. Im not sure it will go through but if not I hope they have another plan as a backup. I have way too many loans. :dancehall:

Absolutely, and with extreme prejudice. These are harmful institutions and practices.

Girl I’m new here but not me thinking you were being homophobic and transphobic towards Demi lovato suggesting they pursue conversion therapy. I literally almost had a heart attack, no pun intended.

but yes democrats should definitely work to stop conversion therapy on a national scale. In actuality, I think that the reason so many homophobic and anti LGBTQ+ bills have been passed, is because a lot of Democrats agree. There’s a reason there’s usually gridlock, and it’s because a lot of democrats and republicans agree on these kinds of things unfortunately
