is that supposed to be relevant for someone moving there to work a white collar job in a major city?

yes, exploring the local culture is important even if you're gonna work in an office

Bullshit. I've lived in Beijing for 6 months and I've traveled a lot around the country and I can tell you that eating wildlife animals was super common ... I wouldn't use the bat eating **** as a drag like that user did because it's indeed quite a racist stereotype so stop quoting me on that but the fact is that this is indeed part of the culture

now back to the topic - although I had fun because I met awesome people, life there is quite sad, people are depressed and I feel like it has gotten much worse after Covid so good luck with your job, OP

I've been to Beijing and Shanghai many and I've NEVER seen any bats, rats, cockroaches, snakes etc. for sale. Where the hell were you visiting? I would like to see it.

Also like someone else said how is this even related to the topic at hand?

Oh you’ve lived in Beijing for half a year? How cute. I’m literally 100% Chinese you dipshit. All of my extended relatives are still in China and I went there every summer as a child. Stupid non Chinese ppl think they can visit China for half a year and you’re more of an expert on Chinese culture than an actual Chinese person LMAO

A black, female friend of mine from high school spent two years studying in Shenzhen and she really enjoyed her time there so it can't be as bad as people in here - who've probably never been there - act like it is :giraffe:

Enjoy the experience

Interesting post.

I feel like its really a case to case basis but the best way to ask quality of life of expats in a certain country is to ask other expats, not locals.

Locals and expats live very divergent lives, anywhere. That on top of the fact that locals and expats have different tolerance level on risk and rewards.

So people going to the internet and seeking answers, only to find out that life isn't what theyre expecting.

So I suggest the OP to connect with other expats in China. This is probably not the right place to ask.

Nothing, just an overall observation.

你好,我用中文表达更方便,you can translation this

Did you actually say “keep your distance from black people”? :biblio:

i had some colleagues that lived there for years and they starting working in Shangai. They all look very happy with their lives there. One of my Chinese friends wanted to go back after living here but he disappeared after, almost years to years I get news from him and he looks well.

atrl is full of biased views of China (biased/hate views about everything so take opinions here as grain of salt). One advice I would give is to get VPN as soon as you can so you can keep using Western apps on your phone, it really changes the perspective because for example I can follow/watch a lot about those ex colleagues who lives there.

never been there but I truly want to visit the country. to a gay perspective it's more accepted in big cities/crowded areas, but for Chinese people their family views take a huge toll on one's life since communal value is strong related to their society. this Chinese friend of mine has told me their family has homophobic views so he would keep his personal life private from them. this is very sad but even this way he preferred to go back to China. another one as an international traveller is so stay out of trouble and think about possible troubles you can get into, always stay down-to-earth that you're in another country that you don't have a strong bond/family bond with other people so you're on yourself, keep yourself safe and keep in touch with people from the company you work for.

all I know are from his views and the views of my ex colleagues. from an professional perspective, my husband is in contact with Chinese workers from his company and he's always making compliments about how well they work and things they manage always get done fast/very well.

on a more serious note: I have no advice to offer. I was learning Chinese for a little bit, but then stopped, but would like to get back to it. Hope you enjoy your stay there. China is a beautiful country.

Racial discrimination exists everywhere in the world, just like here, but it must be due to mutual lack of understanding and cognitive bias. I am a black music enthusiast and I strongly dislike racial discrimination. However, there is indeed such a problem on the internet in China, but I believe the proportion is very small. However, in the face of a large population base, this proportion is also huge. In the end, I have no intention of offending, and I wish the world a great harmony

My friend went there to study and told me it's great.

Not all Europe is Netherlands.  China could be an upgrade in terms of economy, opportunities and life style.

Personally I would never move to any country in Asia except for Israel if it wasn't for the Palestinian conflict.

Yikes, a central platform to report people for political (read: anti-govt) reasons, but we are not surprised by this.

I am curious to know what constitutes as 低俗 or vulgar in the eyes of the government.
