Moving to China any advice?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I might move to China (Guangzhou) at the end of this year because of work for ~ 2 years. Do you have any advice other than to get a VPN (which is listed as illegal according to the foreign ministry in my country so I cannot get it). I’m European and I have never been in China before. I know that I need to get WeChat as you cannot live there without it basically. Is finding a place to live hard? I have to search for it myself. I read somewhere that it’s easy to find an apartment within max 2 months. I’ll work in the Tianhe district and it would be nice not to have a long way home from work (less than 40min). Are there any good sites to look at when searching for an apartment? Thnx in advance for all the replies :spin:

I had a friend live in China for a while. They enjoyed it. Get a Vpn like express vpn for sure. You will meet many kind people from what I heard.

I know some people who were expats in China. They said it was great, the food is cheap and good. And the major cities are no different than the ones in western countries in terms of living standards.

I would say the same thing about the US (my home country). I’m sure most of Europe is better than both:foxaylove2:

trading bat meat was allowed in China up until recently, what point exactly are you trying to make? it's literally part of the Chinese culture

Get a VPN, you will need someone to verify your WeChat account (you will need this to pay for stuff as China is basically cashless), try live near a subway station-public transport in China is amongst the best in the world, learn some Mandarin (Hello Chinese is a good app and some lessons from a teacher is probably a good idea too). There's a few scams you should be aware of particularly the teahouse scam but generally China is very safe.

Take advantage of the time, you can easily visit other cities in China and Hong Kong using the trains and there will be cheap flights to other cities in Asia. Cantonese food is among the best in the world and you should make sure to try the street food too.

is that supposed to be relevant for someone moving there to work a white collar job in a major city?

I’ve always wanted to Visit China, though more Shanghai and Chengdu. I‘ve heard pretty good things about Guangzhou though. Shopping there is supposedly really good. I’d just suggest checking YouTube and TikTok for any western expats living/have lived in the region for more info.

I wouldn’t really take any of the xenophobic rhetoric on ATRL seriously. It’s not like you’d have to dodge bullets or worry for your safety to any major extent in Guangzhou.
