For him, I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Don’t see why he’d do more serious, “indie” films in his case. Maybe if he’s feeling ambitious and risk-taking, suddenly, which is up to him personally. He doesn’t seem to care about awards or even attending those kind of events, and there is more to lose if the films flop if they are horrible. He is 43 years old already. 
 

The Mario movies will give him additional work for years to come now so he basically has guaranteed stream of income from that. Also I think one lane he’ll find a lot of success in the future at minimum will be further voice acting in animated films - he is good at it and he can keep doing it as he gets way older.
