Upfronts 2023 Shocker: FOX cancels 9-1-1, ABC renews

in a shocking event, FOX has decided to cancel their #1 drama 9-1-1 after six seasons. Produced by Disney (indirectly), ABC has decided to buy it and renew it for a 7th season on their network.

Quote

In a clear sign of broadcast’s evolving business realities, Fox has opted not to renew its highest rated scripted series, 9-1-1, produced by 20th Television. The upcoming Season 6 finale on May 15 will be its last episode on Fox. But it will not be a series finale for the first responder drama, from creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, which has been picked up by 20th TV sibling ABC and will join the Disney network’s lineup next season, making for one of the highest-profile series moves ever.

This is not a sudden development and was not done in a vacuum. Deadline reported in March that, while spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star was a lock for a Season 5 pickup, 9-1-1 may not get renewed by Fox and that ABC could pick the show up if that happened. (9-1-1: Lone Star was just officially renewed for a fifth season by Fox.)

I love both shows, although Lonestar has pulled ahead in quality lately but to have 1 air on ABC and the other air on Fox seems wild to me lol

They should’ve left it cancelled unless they fire Kr*sten and give us Buddie endgame.

I mean its all under the Disney corporate umbrella anyway. Disney owns ABC and parts of 20th century fox. :michael:

Then why switch if it doesn’t matter? Clearly there is something behind the scenes that makes a difference.

Maybe they felt that ABC was a better fit, possibly more streaming possibilities for Disney+? I mean im not a board member so I cant tell you the specifics.

simple:

FOX doesnt get any money from it anymore

entering the 7th season means new contracts since most TV stars get 6 seasons contracts, it's already expansive + would cost more due to them being the #1 drama on the network

It is an expensive show and Fox doesn't do but budget shows after it sold 20th Century. Plus they had to pay a license fee from Disney due to it not being in house anymore. It makes big $$$ for Disney so they picked it up.

All of this! I hope Lone Star joins once S5 wraps. I want another legitimate crossover.

It was bound to happen since it's produced by Disney and FOX doesn't own it, nor Lone Star (which I think it'll be moving to ABC in a couple seasons too)

Also, while we're on it, make Buddie happen :jonny5:

Now that it moves to the gayest network Buddie confirmed
