It was nice seeing a childhood icon on stage and I hope Nintendo does more with its franchises such as cartoons and more movies. I need a Zelda live action movie and Warioware Cartoon now! Nothing about it seemed like it would be a billion grosser until the third week. It was flopping in Asia and it was falling quick on weekdays (since we’re not in summer). I get that Mario is huge and has a ton of brand awareness, but the film was looking at less than $750 cumulative just a month ago and now people are expecting over $1.2B.
Wrecked Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 Taking my nephews to see this tomorrow, hopefully I enjoy it!

Da Vinci Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 Why are people using Mario/Illumination as ammo against Disney as if Illumination isn't even more soulless and money obsessed and literally appeals to the lowest common denominator out of all the big animation studios Trust me if they actually had nostalgic iconic properties they'd be doing live action remakes left and right, even Dreamworks is doing How To Train Your Dragon Is it really cause of the "woke" nonsense? Are yall really that racist and homophobic?
wesleywalrus Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 By far the billion dollar club's worst entry. Absolutely unwatchable.

Movies have ticket pre sales that are used to gauge early interest, which is why Mario’s success has been so surprising. Films are significantly more well-tracked than any other metric and you’re able to gauge the performance of a movie by its opening week almost 95% of the time. Mario is such a crazy outlier because it came in well above expectations, its pre sales versus walk-ins were heavily skewed towards walk-ins and it is performing like a summer blockbuster despite school being in session, giving it really abnormal drops and rebounds. Before the movie launched, its performance was not looking nearly as good as what it has managed to achieve. Even in Japan and South Korea it had incredibly disappointing pre-sales and opening days, just to rebound on Saturday and make a killing. The movie is outperforming its early indicators. 2 hours ago, wesleywalrus said: Mario rivaling Transformers on which is more unwatchable. Who would've thunk. This movie wasn’t unwatchable by any means and you girls need to learn to think for yourselves and stop crafting personalities based on what you see critics saying. The pacing and dialogue was off, but it was still a great movie and one of the best visually in the top 100.
perfect blue Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 It was a visual feast and I loved seeing one of my fav video game brands translated to cinema. No one watched it for the plot lbr.

If anything, it showcases how dumb the games are. Bowser destroying towns unless Peach marries him, bffr No character development, no plot. Visuals were great but a 90 minute movie felt like 2 hours. Seeing how many easter eggs and references you can fit into a movie doesn't make it good.
Blade Runner Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Such a terrible movie filled with non-characters. I was part of that 1B, sadly.
Doogle Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Can’t wait to see this 1 billion grossing SMASH. Only just came out here in Japan
