Is the Little Mermaid set to box office disappointment?

The film actually looks to be the first since literally Jungle Book/Cinderella that captures some sense of the magic of the original. If it doesn’t outdo the disgusting mess that was TLK I’ll be pissed.

110m for 4 days is exactly on pair with box office pro 3 days prediction (70-90M).

It would be good if with good legs.

‘Little Mermaid’ To Do Backflips Over Memorial Day Weekend With $110M Opening – Box Office Early Look

Watch them move the goalposts again :fan:

Now it's "too early" to say that it will be a successful film now that the tracking for this film looks promising, but it wasn't too early to claim it would flop? :deadbanana2:

This seems about right. People thinking it would do badly were deluding themselves.

I’m more interested in seeing the WW numbers. Those worry me the most. Hopefully it’ll do well.

If it doesn't open to $300M globally then I guess $1B is off the table since I believe TLK did nearly $500M opening weekend. Unless the movie is really great since Aladdin opened to $200M and still hit a billion but that was pre-streaming. It's really hard to predict tbh.

In a perfect world, this would shatter expectations :chick3:

Unfortunately, this movie wouldve done better if they had a white redhead with an autotuned shjt voice. Such is the nature of this society. REAL little mermaid fans immediately identified ariel in halle’s voice, which is ariel’s most important quality. The POYW reactions from Little Mermaid fans on YouTube have been very positive. So based on that, I still think this will break even. But lots of racists and ignorant people wont even give it a chance.

That is fantastic. Aladdin at the same point opened with tracking at $70-90M. It should only go up from here.

Actually I disagree….a basic white gurl on the roll wouldn’t have generated this much conversation:

I hope the whole controversy plays in its favour, tbh. I see some people complaining about the runtime, but I didn't see this complain with 2-hours movie The Lion King so, sounds like a sad excuse.

Exactly! It just showed how important representation is. :date3:

In the last few days the length of the Spiderman movie came out and they were very happy - 2 hours long! :priceless:

exactly my thoughts.

my only disappointment from the things we've seen so far is Ursula's characterization. I expected something more octopus-y/davy jones from pirates of the caribbean. she basically looks like someone dressed as Ursula. and those sleeves have to go.

this is a horrible opening number lol

It’s #8 all-time for that weekend and it did it despite massive controversy, attacks from a presidential candidate and poor reception from previous live action films.

The Little Mermaid has more going against it than for it and I’m sure Disney would be happy with a worldwide gross even as low as $600M.

but the predictions probably would have been higher and probably do better WW because society loves their basic little white girls. Especially China. :michael:

I have a feeling Korea and Japan will come around. No comment on China.

It's just a vague and random title based on the release date. Might even be a publicity plant for their site views. :rip:

You need to compare it with other Disney remakes made on a similar budget to get a clear picture.

As for the box office numbers I don't know if they are good or not. A 70M-90M score versus and 110M+ seems like a hug gap in predictions. Are you sure the later is not including an extra day?  Or maybe it's an updated and more accurate version?

For the overall box office, it should be noted that the studio takes 60% of US cinema compared to 40% in international cinemas and only 35% in China. So even if the movie's success turns to be local it's numbers are concentrated in US as there is more revenue for Disney than in other markets.

Yeah Japan and Korea love musicals, Aladdin and BATB smashed there

TLK not as much but maybe it's cause it's not as romantic or fairy tale-ish (which TLM is)
