It will do alright. Racism will have a huge impact in its BO.

Some of the backlash is racism, but some of it is fatigue with Disney remakes.

i can understand the fatigue with the remakes bc its getting tired

I think this will do way above expectations on its debut weekend, but eventually will be frontloaded and without legs. And without China, the WW BO definitely will be lesser than other remakes.

Don't really think the internet "backlash" against the film will really have an effect on it, but we'll see...

They could have used Halle and still been a little closer to the original. Her hair looks brown when it should be way more visibly red. I think people are just disappointed she looks nothing like the cartoon anymore. At least should have kept red hair.

The Little Mermaid is going to do just fine. Presales tracking is already quite promising. Besides, this is so not a film that would have heavy previews. This will be huge for walk-up sales.

Also lol-ing at the poster who can't understand the difference between Twitter reactions to movie posters/trailers and actual pre-releaae test screenings. Adorable.

Test screenings have indeed been quite positive.

It genuinely amuses me that people will refuse to see this because of the poor girl's skin colour and hair texture. The racism is so palpable in some of you. Gross.

Unfortunately this might happen. The majority of the public reaction has been negative so far. Let's hope the movie's good enough to change their minds tho

I really hope this movie smashes, especially after all the nasty backlash Halle received.

It'd be proving the racists right if this flops.

lowkey want it to flop because I'm tired of live actions but at the same time I want it to smash because Halle deserves + it's my second fave disney princess

Posted

I hope it smashes so racists can seethe and shut up with the "get woke go broke" nonsense for 5 minutes

I hope it doesnt flop because of the racist people BUT Ariel was always my favorite Disney princess and im not blown away by the trailer. I wish her hair was more red and I wish they did the animals differently

I don't think it will be a MASSIVE success but it won't pull a Mulan either.

I really would like to see it flop :heart2:
Only Mario can thrive this year cinematically

As long as it breaks even it'll be fine. The soundtrack will also earn some cash but not a lot since the streams for the new song isn't good.

Depends entirely on the movies quality tbh. If it's bad, this movie will bomb so hard it will just be sad. If it's good, it'll overpweform but very less

My estimates

$150m if the movie has bad receipting

$250m if it's mixed

$350m if it's positive

$400m if it's very positive

I won't see the movie, but I'll stream the music

She doesn't have the ariel aura at all. I'm not saying she won't be good just in the perspective of people wanting everything similar to the cartoon she doesn't seem to have (the movie can change my mind) the aura of the cartoon. As POC people would have loved ( i mean racists apart) Taylor Russell or of course Zendaya.

:bibliahh:

She auditioned, she made the creative team cry. She was brought back for screen tests and the executives at Disney watched the tapes and said, “It’s Halle. Rob, you need to go with her”.

The fact that you think you know whose  better suited for the role than an entire team at a film studio and without watching the film itself. A joke.

The movie didn't come out to talk about streams numbers. :gaycat2:

Eh, it's pre-sales have been strong and 10M in previews is currently on the table (Aladdin did 7M in previews for comparison). While I'm not personally predicting it to hit 1B, the GP obviously likes seeing these films irregardless of blown-out culture war nonsense. Most people simply don't care that much and parents will still take their kids to see it.

I hope so. I just hope they UPPED the color. Cause it looked dull in the trailer

I think it will depend if the movie is actually good

Really, I think the controversy surrounding Ariel being played by a POC actress doesn't exist as much out in the world as much as it does online. I won't say that it's not really out there because that would be naive, but I really don't believe it is to the extent we see it in online spaces. Social media is an echo chamber that will amplify narratives that don't often reach out into the real world.

The pre-sales are solid and walk ups are historically great for Disney remakes in opening weekend and continue to be if the word of mouth is positive. These remakes tend to be successful even if the word of mouth is only tepidly positive, they don't need the overwhelming word of mouth many movies do. It'll be a success, the question is just to what degree.
