Honestly, the fact I can have some nice Korean BBQ and while playing a Nintendo game on the side, tells me both countries are doing good. While Japan will always be Asia's IT Girl, Korea slays too. But I worry how popular K-pop will remain outside of Asia after BTS and BLACKPINK fade in relevance, hopefully Korea softpushes their other Kpop groups :heart2:

The only MPG is China. A global phenomenon I fear   :biblionny:

It's just not true. GP cares music/drama way more than anime/mange

Are you insane? Or maybe have more than just gay friends. Because Anime has the people in a chokehold. Anime as an industry is probably 5x that of K-pop. Maybe more because Anome is also big in Africa and I’m not sure they measure that accurately.

No, Japan is still the it girl, followed by China, then South Korea and there are large gaps between each of them. South Korea may be rising due to Kpop and Kdramas but the other two has generations of influence and centuries of global reach that make South Korea look tiny in comparison within the global zeitgeist.

Nope

Not yet. If Manhwa ends up catching up to Manga then yes it will have officially replaced it.

Still, culturally I think Japan is much more fascinating but both are really amazing countries tbh

for years now. japan has nothing really new or impactful in like how many years now? but their culture is the strongest in Asia for sure.

Yes.

Because IT girl just means more current, not necessarily bigger overall.

You're asking this when Nintendo currently has the #1 film in the world? Interesting.

And the answer is no. There's clearly room for both.

Nintendo and Sony having the biggest consoles, the #1 movie in the world being a Japanese franchise, tue biggest game last year being a ge developed in there, there’s anime, manga, and brands like Toyota, etc… i mean…Japan wasn’t replaced lmao

are we not going to mention how impressive it is for a country like south korea to be even be compared with japan considering the later completely burned korea to the ground not even a century ago, enslaved and killed millions of koreans and tried to completely wipe out korean culture?? for it to become that influent in the present days despite japan's multiple attempts at erasing it is a win itself :clap3:

i'm sure the posts would be different if it the countries were replaced with a western country and its former colony but since it japan it gets a pass :ducky:

Thank you~

Korea has been incredibly successful despite having to basically reinvent itself from the late 80s on (ex. Japan has the city pop genre from the 80s, while Korea has it's own current city-pop which is reflective of a past it didn't have).

My mum's been eating up every single kdrama on netflix and my sister has listened to 5050's cupid on tik tok. Yeah it's officially over for FADpan :michael:

i don't think atrl users actually know or realize korea was the second (?) poorest country in the world only a few decades ago actually

Japan is still that IT girl.

But I think South Korea needs to unify with the North to topple her.

Japan has been influencing the world since the 19th century and still has a stronger impact today. Let's not forget that Japan was the model economy (in Asia) when both Korea and China are rebuilding theirs.

When it comes to Influence in Asia; Japan and China are competing at the top.

The current Korean boom is great, but I think it's beginning to peak.

Only in music but everything else, no

No, she will never surpass Queen Japan, who is just too far ahead in terms of everything tbh. And I'm the biggest k-pop fan I know.

saying kpop is bigger than anime is just straight up delusional :toofunny2:

and we still have electronics (sony, nintendo, canon. nikon, toshiba, sharp etc) vehicles (honda, toyota, nissan, lexus, mazda, suzuki, yamaha)  culture (sakura, kimono,  origami, harajuku) food (sushi outeverythinged any korean food by far, onigiri, ramen etc)

hello kitty and pokemon alone are the top 2 biggest media franchise in the world with over $80 billion total revenue

but for sure kpop and kdrama are bigger than jpop and jdrama atm though, so theres that..

Japan is still the IT asian country, the things they make are authentically Japanese(mostly). While, Korea makes koreanafied things

This is the one true answer of the thread. Korea basically makes remixes of stuff and applies a Korean aesthetic to them whereas Japan makes distinctly Japanese things.

The one area that Korea outdoes Japan is kpop in terms of popularity. J-pop is not known really internationally and the music market for it is local to Japan only whereas especially recently Kpop has gone global
