Kpop Album Sales are getting Insane

Featured Replies

BTS, Twice, & BlackPink are casual pulling 1-2 Million Album opening week every single comeback. And sometimes release day they outsell most western artist entire Physical album catalogue. Kinda crazy the last 3-4 years Kpop sales have been dominating even major western PopStars. Like 4Million?! Seveteen are about to break BTS record.💀Damn. I know it’s just Stan’s and these are just pre-order numbers. But still the dedication:clap3: never thought I’d see Kpop groups running world tour stadiums and outselling major pop girls consistently

aside from that, it always surprises me how seventeen pull those numbers. because i barely know online friends or people irl that stans them (even on atrl, not a lot of them). must be a different audience that they attract i guess.

the discussion about fraud sales is growing stale because regardless of how many unique individual purchasers there are, recorded music is an industry and is driven by profit, not the amount of listeners who only casually listen to a song. The popularity is usually really frontloaded in kpop but that stops mattering when a high profile kpop release is doing more streams and sales up front than a lot of A-list western acts manage in whole album cycles.

Relatively small(compared to the American big 3) kpop companies are also now regularly coming up with acts that generate hundreds of millions of dollars in a way some major western labels are struggling to do in the streaming era. This is very interesting and uncharted waters for the music industry as a whole and people who haven't taken idol groups as seriously in the past should be looking closer. The implications of this are huge(Even Taylor who needs 0 help with popularity is starting to incorporate some kpop strategies)

Also change the title to "unknown kpop act pulls 4m preorders" for a kii :bunny:

Non-profit organizations crying right now, not only do the idols eat CDs, the orphaned kids about to eat it as well.

It's truly getting insane, especially for girl groups, the difference between gen 2 and gen 4 album sales is abysmal

Yes and it's crazy how if an average k-pop group gets 100k-200k sales they're considered a flop or nugu

But if a pop girl gets 100k-200k sales it's considered a success

Better marketing & honestly the fan culture in Asia is CRAZY

I'm sure most sales are due to collectibles or photocards or whatever they are, plus the obsession of making their faves a "smash"

It's just like if ATRL culture were extremely normal and common in the U.S.

I wouldn't dare putting this differently :rainbow: but let me just say I am grateful not to be doing what this Jimin or whatever they're called stans are doing

:rip: The best example of how inflated the album sales are, because Seventeen are surely not bigger than BTS, BP, Twice etc :toofunny2:

it’s the power of South East Asia. China too but idk what they be up to.

there has always been chart manipulation but i just wish it wasn’t such a high % with these larger groups. there’s no way to know how many people bought these albums and from what country. i would prefer to see #1 albums in thailand indonesia etc not just america.

Tbh, the users suggesting they're not selling music but rather more like merch are accurate. I happen to actually listen to my physical K-pop CDs but I am in a tiny minority. These sales are about photocards & the collecting aspect of things, and it's just completely exploded in the last few years.

It's not even really fair to compare it to pop girl sales, because we're not comparing apples to apples. The closest equivalent thing you have in the West is vinyl, and sales of that are also continuously increasing. It's just that fandom/collecting is a much bigger thing in Asia while it does remain niche outside of gays/hispters in the west

It’s landfill for the most part. The only groups that can back up their album sales with touring and streaming numbers are Blackpink and BTS

also yes kpop albums are merchandise I love Blackpink CD collection It’s so pretty to display

k-pop is the biggest threat ‪to the environment tbh

where is the news and the media

I know Blinks love to discredit TWICE but they definitely can back up their numbers too. Or else they wouldn't be performing at stadiums in the US.

I agree with the touring part however Twices stadium/arena tour will gross less than BPs all arena tour in the US last year.

Also Born Pink will gross around $300M which is more than Twices entirecareer combined.

Plus Twices b side streams are abysmal.

I’m nit discrediting them I’m just saying they are not on the same level. Also Twice doesnt sell 4M albums and then gross like $30M on a tour only. So their stats somewhat match.

Their music has been stale for a while, but what increases the album sales are the photocards. I think it was actually Seventeen last year that had an album with over 100 photocards and stans who want to get their favorite artist usually purchase a ton of album versions to get their bias, and obviously there are fans who want to collect all of those pcs.

Let's see if Exo can snatch the best selling album in SM history this year, at least quality will win :clap3:

those albums are gonna join adele's vinyls at the bottom of the ocean :toofunny3:
