SAME!! Was literally about to say the same thing. I almost feel like Electronic is the genre she should stay in. She was COOKING with Blackheart and Redemption…and I felt her popularity growing too. But it’s all slowed down since. I wanted to blame Covid (no tours, etc), but idk if that’s the reason. Edited April 7, 2023 by professor2000
OnlyRealMusic. Posted April 7, 2023 Author Posted April 7, 2023 So because you guys prefer Electronic Dawn, it means that she should say in that register? Even though we all know she's never satisfied with one genre... and she includes electronic elements in all her work... Like what do you mean "return to form" @ChapelHooker? Return to your form, the way you like her? Those comments make no sense to me... Sorry I'm just rambling, because people pick on the smallest things... She's been doing incredible things as an independent artist, and now Merge is about to catapult her into something bigger and better. And this era seems like a more pop era, I'm excited for it.
liquiddiamonds Posted April 7, 2023 Posted April 7, 2023 (edited) Her last album, Second Line, was a serve. She lowkey anticipated Renaissance with Bussifame and other tracks. Cant relate to other comments. I did think new breed was a comedown from Redemption and Infrared (one of her best projects ever), but Dawn never disappoints. She always feeds us good electroR&B. On top of that she has proven to excel in experimental music too with Pigments. Hopefully these two worlds fuse for the new project excited!!!! Edited April 7, 2023 by liquiddiamonds

The way that album helped with my confidence is crazy.
nooniebao Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 This is so freakin good. She just understands her strengths the way so few artists do tbh. Btw, justice for dreams and converse:
That Bad Eartha Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 Yeah this is cute. I think my main thing with her recently is I just vibe with her more experimental stuff WAY more than I do with her "mainstream" leaning releases. Like Pigments for me was my favorite project she's been involved with in years. Not that New Breed/Second Line weren't also experimental in parts. But they lacked that sort of epic mythos that was built into the trilogy albums and the non-album singles/EPs. It's the same problem that it seems like we're heading for with Janelle Monae's new album and the same problem that plagued a lot of Janet's 2000s onward output. Often the music itself is/was still good, it just lacks the grandeur of their previous outings so it feels disappointing by comparison. I also think she's an incredible vocalist and the vocals on Second Line in particular are so buried under the beats that it makes for a harder listen. I don't blame her for any of this because I'd imagine navigating the electronic world as a black woman, especially one who is coming from the pop world, was very difficult to find a long term foothold. And it seems like even if I'm not vibing with it, this new lane is getting her bigger opportunities in terms of festival bookings, etc.
