I've always had the feeling that Ariana wanted to work with Pharell because she wanted to recreate Kelis' Tasty sound with Sweetener. Honestly it's one of my favorite albums too, every single track is literally a banger.

I don’t think Ariana was trying to do anything honestly. Pharrell just gave her some of his demos (and the occasional Camila Cabello reject) she said okay

If she did try to make her own Tasty she should sue Pharrell for scamming her.

 

Instead of giving her songs on the level of Milkshake, Trick Me, Keep It Down and In Public he gave her trash like sweetener, blazed, R.E.M. and the light is coming.

i won't be surprised if one day some demo of her mumbling twist it and mix it over Sangria Wine's beat surfaces

tbh most of sweeteners sounds isnt hat far off from kelis album

the light is coming remains one of the best records of all time tho, the experimental , immersive production slaps

I’ve always felt the album was very inspired by Kelis too, but whatever Ariana was aiming for she succeeeded because Sweetener is a great album

And thank god they did cause that hook was too good to be wasted on a squeaky pitchy voice with awful lyrics.

Still none of the Pharrell tracks on sweetener hold a candle to Milkshake. Even the majority of his productions on Hard Candy are better than whatever those on sweetener are.
