Aethereal Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 There is also the story about Samantha deciding to be lesbian and going back straight. Which is basically is the homophobic stereotype that lesbians are lesbians because they have not found the right dick to turn them "straight".
PMKARDASHIAN Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 (edited) A lot of plot points and story lines from then are some form of -ist, -phobic by todays standards. A lot of the themes were revolutionary for the time, and while some still hold up to today, a lot are outdated Edited April 2, 2023 by PMKARDASHIAN
Uncatena Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 I would argue the writers thought they were being progressive here but it absolutely wasn't. it's obviously not okay but it's a product of its time.

LoveInStereo Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 No. Context matters. In that era of NYC, street walkers of all genders weren’t with the PC, assimilationist jargon like they are now & they wore their counterculture status with pride. Like that plot with the girls on the street making noise isn’t an indictment of trans people as a whole, it’s a lighthearted depiction of a specific type of person from that period who was respected for being a punk or a rebel

Hot Volcano Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Even if it was, it was a 90s show ffs, times were different.
*.Digambar.* Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Of course ppl here would say it's not. The T on ATRL might as well be transphobic. Its a product of it's time but yes, it was transphobic. Calling us half man half woman IS transphobic and using the slur is transphobic.

Trent W Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Dragging shows/people for their cultural content at the time is soooo soooo cheap Back then it was “progressive” to talk about or include some of these topics

Mirtilo Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Yes, it was. Transphobia was rampant and socially accepted in the 00's, even within the queer community.
ninasayers Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 When the show came out society as a whole was super transphobic and a ton of shows/films reflected that (which doesn't make it any less transphobic though). All the users saying no... Yes, context matters but it's still very clearly transphobic. How ******* dumb are y'all?
