Was released during a time where we came off torture porn (Saw etc.) and the start of the possession movie wave (Insidious, Conjouring etc) plus the nostalgia wave didn’t hit yet. Plus it followed Scream 3 which was the worst received of all in the franchise. Scream 4 also wasn’t received too well upon release. 

 

A lot of obstacles which led to the cancellation of the original second trilogy.

The original has aged like milk too. It would not hold up to viewings by a younger audience like the original Black Christmas might, or how the original Scream would. Some of the original Halloween is now absolutely laughable.
