We will find a way to stop IWALY. Holly Valance may not be up to the task, but I’m putting my faith in “Freak Like Me.”

This is not just some “Hallelujah” cover. It’s the version that helped bring the song out of obscurity. One of the great interpretations of all time!

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 31, 2023 Author ATRL Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 Updating now! "Invisible" Ashlee Simpson "Eternal Flame" Atomic Kitten "Freak Like Me" Sugababes "Hallelujah" Jeff Buckley "Hurt" Johnny Cash "Make You Feel My Love" Adele "Venus" Bananarama "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 31, 2023 Author ATRL Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 It was good to be named Houston in the first round of the Whitney Division. Not only did #1 "I Will Always Love You" breeze past the competition (though #16 "Invisible" found a surprisingly large amount of support from Ashlee Simpson partisans!), but #15 "Don't Leave Me This Way" scored a massive upset over another top seed, #2 "Same Ol' Mistakes." The rest of the region largely played out as expected, albeit in fairly close contests. #3 "It's Oh So Quiet" and #4 "Lady Marmalade" dispatched plaintive ballads #14 "Hurt" and #13 "Hallelujah," respectively, making this the only division with no surviving male acts, while #5 "Freak Like Me" dealt Mariah Carey another blow by defeating #12 "Bringin' On the Heartbreak." In a battle of British Commonwealth bombshells, #9 "Eternal Flame" won out over #8 "Kiss Kiss," and voters narrowly preferred Norah Jones to her fellow Grammy fave Adele, with #6 "Don't Know Why" eliminating #11 "Make You Feel My Love." Only #7 "Venus" faced no real threat, earning five times as many votes as #10 "I Feel Love." (1) "I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston def. (16) "Invisible" Ashlee Simpson [18-7] (9) "Eternal Flame" Atomic Kitten vs. (8) "Kiss Kiss" Holly Valance [14-11] (5) "Freak Like Me" Sugababes def. (12) "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" Mariah Carey [14-11] (4) "Lady Marmalade" Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink def. (13) "Hallelujah" Jeff Buckley [15-10] (3) "It's Oh So Quiet" Björk def. (14) "Hurt" Johnny Cash [14-11] (6) "Don't Know Why" Norah Jones def. (11) "Make You Feel My Love" Adele [14-11] (7) "Venus" Bananarama def. (10) "I Feel Love" Sam Smith [21-4] (15) "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston def. (2) "Same Ol' Mistakes" Rihanna [15-10] With that, we move on to the second round of ATRL March Madness, where 32 reimagined renditions remain chasing the title of the most indispensable cover. It's already been a bloodbath, with several top contenders, including one #1 and two #2 seeds, swiftly defeated. More than half of the entries with male performers managed to hang on, though many of those songs feature female vocalists that may have boosted their chances. With three of Mariah Carey's four qualifying tracks and both of Britney Spears' eliminated, only Whitney Houston and Tina Turner still have multiple songs in the tournament. Check out the updated draw below:
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 31, 2023 Author ATRL Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 RIP to the only Mariah Carey cover we included that I really care for. And justice for "Hurt" and "Hallelujah"! The secound round will begin later today.

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 31, 2023 Author ATRL Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 I think sensible Lambs can acknowledge that covers are…not necessarily Mariah’s best work. Right, @Reverie?

Maybe if it had been in a different match-up. idk it has no nostalgia effect on me, i heard just another pop-y girl group song .. mariah is taking a hit after hit, the bias is too much her version of bringin' on the heartbreak always gets me, such a great rendition Just now, supaspaz said: I think sensible Lambs can acknowledge that covers are…not necessarily Mariah’s best work. Pleaseeeee. Y'all honestly just say things what's that phrase? Something like, "When Mariah covers your song, it's no longer your song."

suburbannature Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 (edited) Mariah's best covers Spoiler I much prefer the live version A GP-demanded single going #1 from the best-selling female live album ever, mind you. So close to going #1 too last two my personal faves other than the Patti live cover Edited March 31, 2023 by suburbannature

So close to going #1 too last two my personal faves other than the Patti live cover Yeah, I don’t like many of these. Syrupy ballad Mariah is not my Mariah. I prefer her witty and sensual, breaking expectations, the voice a vehicle for something deeper rather than the main event itself. Her Glitter covers are fun, though!

Some of it is the luck of the draw. But the Lambs definitely could have done better with song choice because “Against All Odds” is dreadful and “Without You” is a stilted bore.

Only a handful of these are syrupy ballads and even so - ballads are one of Mariah’s trademarks. I don’t know how your personal opinion extended to “even lambs admit it!!” Like, no, Mariah is the cover queen. I mean even the Xmas covers are iconic.
