mercurialworld Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Recently, I have been doing quite a bit of family tree digging/making/researching - and I have to say, the stuff I've found is pretty cool I have been able to trace parts of my family way back from 1000 years ago, and also found some interesting stories about my family and their past. For example, I found out that my great grandfather was noted for his bravery as a student in a book overlooking the occupation of Poland during WWII. What interesting stuff have you found? Have you been able to trace your family tree back a long way? Any juicy tea along the way? Spill below!

waylon4ever Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 My grandmas family on my dads side founded Foster Kentucky! my grandpas family on my dads side: my great grandma babysat for Al Capone’s bodyguard kids and gangster Diamond Jim. My grandpa held a high position in Italy’s government and knew Marconi the inventor. He personally wrote a letter to Mussolini to save a teen’s life and got the teen spared. He was also a published poet. 6 of his sons including my grandpa served in WW2 for America and I have a newspaper article about it.
nathanspears Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Many war stories, great-great uncles and great-uncles were all over the place in both WW1 and WW2. One was in Egypt, one was down in south of England, one in France and was gassed by the Germans. Luckily, he survived. One was in Japan during WW2 and liberated a PoW camp. One of my relatives worked with Robert Stephenson, a railway pioneer.

However I did start a family tree on a site called familysearch.org and it connected me to a massive pre-existing one.
Innocencelost Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 My great grandmother came from one of the biggest patrician families in the Republic of Venice, but when she got pregnant by a servant, she was disowned and estranged from her family. She had to change her name to Anna Rapa and ended up abandoning my newborn grandpa in front of a convent. The monks there raised him and gave him a name - thus inventing my family’s surname, which didn’t exist before the 1910s. My grandpa discovered this later in his life when he already had kids and traced back the woman, but she had no interest in keeping the contact. When he died quite young, a mysterious old woman dressed in black was seen regularly bringing flowers to his grave.
