The Academy said “NO” to Oscar bait movies this year. What went right?

Thank god, more films like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Parasite, less boring white mediocre trash winning Oscars should be the norm going forward

All Quiet was pretty baity, but the industry is clearly losing their taste for traditional bait based on how The Power of the Dog and Fabelmans both flopped.

The Power of the Dog is the opposite of traditional bait

OT: EEAAO is just a big crowd-pleaser and not very challenging so its not that surprising it won. The only thing it had going against it was the academy's hate for Sci-fi

And not the majority Asian cast, with actor that has been traditionally ignored by Hollywood and the Academy?! With Multi-universe concept that even Marvel is struggling to communicate over multiple films? And with a small budget and small team of editors? Yup, totally not that challenging at all. :coffee2:

Cold, "highbrow" cinema like TÁR, Banshees, Power Of The Dog seems to be over at the Oscars yeah.

And that's better so :clap3:

what does the race of the cast have to do with how challenging the film is? and the Marvel comparison says enough

Omg yes! If a movie has white people in it it can't be good so let's award a horrible one about butt plugs, BDSM and dildos with Asian actors instead. Excellent logic babe!

Yes. Glad you finally got the memo.

The Whale and Brendan's role is literally pure Oscar bait  :skull:

I love seeing Oscar-bait movies FAIL, it's my daily medicine, my weekly energy, my monthly inspiration and my yearly motivation.

Rest in PISS.

Because this is Hollywood which has a racial problem when it comes casting and further valuing and nominating minority actors? What post-races multiverse are you living on? :rip:

Oscar said NO to mediocre biopic like Elvis :clap3:

so? the point is they still won so how is the academy "saying no to oscar-bait movie" as the op say? :toofunny3:

The post I was responding to specifically said they won the most awards, which is incorrect.

and those two movies may have won some awards, but the vast majority of “Oscar bait” type movies went home empty handed for less conventional choices, so OP’s point stands.

All Quiet is Oscar bait minus the language. Aside from that, it's Oscar bait 101.

the academy DIDN'T say "no" so, no, the op point doesn't stand.

wouldn't have they awarded the highest grossing movies of the year/all time like Avatar 2 or top gun 2 then? :skull: lmao you ppl just say anything.

No, EEAAO checks more boxes than Avatar or Top Gun.  (Twitter loves it, trendier more youthful movie, not a sequel, new directors etc).

I'm sorry but anyone calling EEAAO "Oscar bait"  is not to be taken seriously, you have clearly no idea what you're talking about :toofunny3:

It's hilarious though to see some people FUMING over its success :toofunny3:

The Whale was specifically made as Oscar bait. They even casted the specific guy for it. I wonder what’s the next minority/“underdog” group they will try to milk as Oscar bait in next year’s edition.

I mean Moonlight-> Green Book->Parasite ->CODA -> EEAAO

and people dare say there’s no agenda :toofunny2:

Oscar bait:

Tar

Elvis

Women Talking

The Fabelmans

AQOTWF

Elvis

Blonde

The Whale

Babylon

Basically any prestige drama, biopic, and movies about movies.

Non-Oscar Bait

EEAAO

Top Gun

Banshees of Inisherin (It's just a signature McDonough Film. For some reason the academy loves to nominate him similar to David Fincher and Christopher Nolan)

Avatar (Typical blockbuster movie)

Triangle of Sadness (Comedy are rare to the oscars and Cannes winners are mostly ignored)

Clearly you haven't seen Tar or Blonde if you think those are Oscar bait films :rip:
