The song was meant for Xtina and she actually is credited as a songwriter, but it got passed to Kelly.

 

Kelly's version went top 10 peaking at #9 on the Hot 100 (it was a single after her American Idol win so there was definitely hype)

Be a top 10 hit and do better than all the singles of Stripped sans Beautiful?

 

Would it do better than Fighter and peak in the top 15?

 

Would it do similar to Fighter and peak in the top 20?

 

Would it do worse and peak around top 40?

I feel like if FIghter only made top 20, I can't see how this would do better but maybe it's more radio friendly and would have a chance idk

The thing is the singles choices for the album were already perfect and she already had the better "Girl Power" anthem with Can't Hold Us Down.

 

But I wish she had kept it and released it as the lead single for her Greatest Hits instead of Keeps Getting Worse.

The song is GOOD. Is like Legend X was running away from commercial HITS and just doing her thing huh? 

This song would’ve been a great transition sound from debut to Stripped. If it were released as a single in 2001 it could have smashed.

They were ran by payola.

 

Which is why I’ll say that Christina couldn’t have made this a hit. It’s a pretty mediocre song and Kelly only got to where she was on the charts because  of the American Idol hype. If Christina wanted more success for her singles, she would have had to signed to a more payola-dependent label or just skipped “Dirrty.”

Probably worse, I think it fits Kelly better and she had AI hype. I never liked the song tho

Very safe for her comeback single like 3rd single maybe

I actually wish she would have released Infatiation or Get Mine Get Yours as singles before releasing The Voice Within as the final 6th single.

Should have honestly been her 4th single replacing Can’t Hold us down. It would’ve been a global smash.

It peaked higher than 4/5 of Stripped’s singles so I think it would’ve done worse. But this was perfect for Kelly’s first album. Not strong enough for Xtina at that time in her career. I imagine the production would’ve been different had it been done by Xtina though since she had more resources than Kelly in 2002. 

It wouldn’t have fit on stripped and I bet X couldn’t have done it half as good as Kellegend

These are all sales-only charts. The US chart in the early 2000s was essentially a radio-only chart.

It wouldn't even have been the same song. Kelly co-wrote on it just like Christina co-wrote on it
