Seeing that Aretha is the Queen of R&B/Soul, her counterpart was 100% supposed to be Marvin Gaye. From awareness about inner-city issues post-Civil Rights, to feel-good love songs, Marvin Gaye matched her energy.

Unfortunately, we were sadly unable to see whether he could sustain his streak of impeccable albums as he passed away before the "more complicated" second-half of his career. Sam Cooke and Otis Redding also fall into this category, but Marvin Gaye was just a slight step ahead of the two in my mind.

 

Enter Stevie Wonder. An artist who has been blessed to live so many lives in the public eye, and most of them include a chart-topper or two.

Child Piano Prodigy, A Jewel in the Motown crown, An adult act unafraid to push boundaries, a celebrity of celebrities who collaborated with everyone, and finally, an elder statesman who was able to receive his flowers while living and hear his tribute.

Multiple Diamond Albums, AOTY Grammys, and multiple projects that further broadened R&B.
