RTW and LOT are definitely more remembered now than the legit hits from 2011, but that’s a different story

According to ATRL, Taylor hasn’t had a hit since 2014 so Taylor‘s best album REPUTATION, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, Red (TV), Fearless (TV) and Midnights.

Halcyon didn't really have a US hit and I'm pretty sure it's over 500k now.

Well JW and ILTY are platinum and neither even had a top 40, 50 or even 60 hit to their name. the One Wish holiday album is gold as well and will get closer to platinum every holiday season.

At the respective time, “4” had no substantial hits outside of, perhaps, “Love On Top”.

KIB was just certified 3x platinum a month and some change ago. And they’re not even comparable. MR has 700 million streams on Spotify and near 2 million pure sales while KIB has 300 something million streams and 500k pure sales. Streaming was just getting started in 2016 so 700m is good for a song with that chart run, which it still spent 20 weeks on with low radio.

So Applause is a hit because radio gave it a good chart run initially, but Million Reasons is not a hit because it was unsupported by radio, even though it still managed to move just as many units via longevity/actual consumption?

As far as the OP goes, I don't see a clear intention for us to name eras only without "smash hits". Perhaps they can clarify though.

I agree Love on Top was a moderate hit compared to others in 2011/2012, but to say Billboard's #1 R&B/Hip-Hop Song of 2012 was not a "hit" seems really limiting. Beyoncé released an R&B album in the dance-pop movement and though it didn't do big things on the Hot 100, it gave her three Top 5 hits (#1, #2, #4) on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart plus another at #7 for a song she didn't even release as a single. Thus, it should be no surprised the album sold over 500,000 copies, as for the genre that it is, it really activated people's taste.

 

That being said, 4 sold over 500,000 copies by its fourth week even before Love on Top was even released so there is a point in that, I guess.
