Cuz that can be a pretty personal question, especially when asked by a stranger. Marriage on the other hand is a more public status (ex: wedding ring)

Idk… some of the most miserable people I know have money, a house, family etc… it’s not the be all and end all.

Maybe for some people, but plenty of people aren't happy even if they have those things.

Asking someone if they are happy is far too personal. That's a question a close friend or family member would ask. Not a person you just met, where asking about your career, if your married, etc are okay and considered topical questions.

I wish you  were right and that life was that simple but it's not, having roof under your head,  financial stability and love are just our basic human needs however unfortunately most people on this planet struggle to obtain all of that so it's presented as this ultimate goal, however after that you realise that you still have some deep rooted traumas and personal demons that won't go away. Also mantaining that alone can be a struggle, just going from day to day life thinking about nurturing relationships and working to mantain your fortune can be overwhelming and honestly depressing
