All of these women are among the biggest female artists of the last couple of decades. If we talk about visual and sonic presentation, which one started the biggest amount of music trends that their other female contemporaries and upcoming generation of female singers followed and continue to borrow from?

The one that introduced Trap and bisexuality to the mainstream :clap3:

Lady Gaga :clap3:

Janet Jackson. She’s credited for the invention of two new sub-genres (New Jack Swing with Control and Alt-R&B with The Velvet Rope) which both went on to dominate R&B music. Her choreography and visuals are still being recreated by the likes of Doja, Normani, Chloe, Tinashe, Teyana etc despite all of them growing up in an era where she was completely blacklisted within the  industry is a testament to her long-lasting impact in music

Avril started the pop rock chick trend from the 2000 from 2002 until 2009 :clap3:

Visually: Madonna and that’s not even up for discussion.

Sonically: Rihanna

Forgot to add Kylie Minogue, but it wouldn't make any change if I did, I guess...

You mean other than the obvious one which will always be Madonna?

I'd say Gaga and Lana have really changed music and lead trends in the biggest ways since Madonna. The biggest followers (so least influential) would be Taylor, Katy and Britney.

Drunk In Love was literally a hit at the same time, what did Katy popularize that the masses hadn't heard?:rip:

Madonna, Rihanna, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga.

IT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE.

All the girls tried to have their Dark Horse hit with a trap breakdown, no one tried to imitate DIL pleaseee

Selena Gomez - her albums reshaped whole top 40 on pop radio! she's the first one since Michael Jackson Thriller

I never said ppl tried to imitate Drunk In Love, just that Dark Horse didnt popularize anything :rip:

Sure jan

Next in, Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice popularized Rap trend:toofunny3:

Every country on earth had their own version of Britney at some point so her I guess

Sonically: Rihanna- dance music (SOS, GGGB-Don’t stop the Music ) back to the US charts. I would say Confessions Hung up but 2005 was still R&B heavy. I think GGGB really changed the dynamic and it did come before Blackout and The Fame. She also put producers/artists  on the map (The Dream after Umbrella), Calvin Harris after WFL, Sia after Diamonds, PND with Work, JR Rotem after SOS,  MikewillMade it w. PouritUp, Future w/Lovee Song, SZA w/Consideration).

Visually: Madonna  & Janet

There even is a term Madonnawannabe. She also is the first pop girl to really start in the music video age. She had attitude and swag. She was the Rihanna of the 80s- attitude and swag from the short haircut of True Blue, to the new brown hair of Like a Prayer video , to old Hwood of Vogue-every album era had a visual transformation and she slayed each one never looking ridiculous or over the top. It always looked natural

Janet started the having tons of backup dancers on stage, the crop top and jeans, the head mic, the chair dance trend, on stage strip tease to a member of the audience,  and many other music video and performance trends I’m forgetting right now.  This picture was 1994. It looks like all of the 2000s acts
