one time during university i was so poor that my housemate had a domino’s pizza under his bed (he had been at his parents for the past month) and i took it and microwaved it and ate it all .

it actually tasted brand new despite being over a month old which i was shocked about

This is so disgusting…

Yes , it’s considered safe here, especially if you place it on the refrigerator you can extend into several days or weeks. For instance, palm oil that I bought expired last week and it’s still definitely in a good shape and condition.

Palm oil? Are you a Nigerian like me?

Yes, I can tell what's expired by the smell. Sometimes I will throw food out before the expiry date because I can tell it went bad by the smell. Other times I can tell it's still good past the expiry date, eat it and all is fine.

Yes, mostly with canned food, but do cans really expire? Let's be honest here

Posted

Yes. But it depends which food.

If a corner of a slice of bread is rotten, I pinch it off and eat the rest.

If the tag says its a day or two past its time, I look at it first. If it still looks good, I eat it.

Cooked food I can't risk, if its on its third day and smells even just a bit off, I bin it.

I can't afford to waste food.

Never gotten sick.

it depends on what the food is. but if its only a couple days past the date, I'll use it

Anything but meat or seafood to be honest. Bread, crackers, dry fruit, spreads. Yoghurt I've had like a month after the expiration date and I was fine

No, I almost always look at expiration date before even opening anything. Not even a day before would I eat that ****.

Posted

For canned and dried stuff it's perfectly okay, most of those are "best before date"

Dairy and meat on the other hand *side eye*

Only if it hasn't expired yet

It depends on the item and its expiration date. But I try not to.

No

No, my body rejects and gets sick too easily.

Some things, I mean the expiration date doesn't mean that the food will be rotten the next day, it's just the date the brand warrants the quality of the product. Anyway, I do with certain things, dairy being the exception since those tend to spoil quite easily.

Posted

If it's raw meat, then absolutely not.

If it's other things (i.e., veggies/fruits), then I'll check through it all and see if it's good/safe to eat.

Posted

Yes, depending on the food and how much time from the expiration date has passed. Generally speaking, if it looks and smells good, it's most likely good to eat.

Posted

as long as it passes the look and smell test, i dont care

don't let me blow your mind but y'all realize no food company/distributor can magically predict when something goes bad with just a date right?

Canned food can last many years after the date.

Sugar and chocolate never expire.

Dairy product can last one month past the date.

The only risk is for fresh veggies, fish and meat.
