As the top female artist of her time, Britney Spears was not only a muse for the music industry, but also a main option for songwriters, producers and A&R people.

I'm creating this thread with informative purposes. In here, I'll provide a list of songs that were either rejected by Britney, meant for Britney, considered for Britney, or on Britney's interest at some point, before said song ended being released by a different artist.

I'm only mentioning those with an official source that expresses the detail. There are many known "Britney rejects" but that unfortunately I've not been able to find an official source to back it up. I'll list them at the end as "pending," additionally with songs that have been rumored to have been intended for Britney as well.

Since this is for informative purposes, I'd love for this to be an active and interactive thread, where you can help me completing it. Needless to say, correction for any inaccurate information here given is welcome.

That said, let's get into it.

  

1. "Afterglow" by Couture (feat. Rachelle)

In early 2008, producer/songwriter Steve Anderson uploaded to his YouTube channel a video of this song captioned with a story of how it was originally on consideration for Britney's latest album at the time, Blackout. He's better known in the pop world for doing "Breathe On Me" by Britney and big portion of Kylie Minogue's discography. The track was then release by Couture featuring writer of the song Lisa Greene under her middle name as artistic pseudonym.

2. "All I See" by Kylie Minogue

In a 2007 interview, Jonas Jeberg says (min 4:23) this song was written for Janet Jackson and that Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez also received the track. Talking to the Original Doll podcast, Lil Eddie confirms (min 32:54) Janet Jackson recorded a version, as well as Cassie and Gia Farrell, but that Kylie Minogue was his first option.
Included in Kylie's 10th album X (2007), "All I See" was released as a lead single in the US and 4th elsewhere.

3. "Angel Of My Dreams (S.A.D. Version)" by Jade

Jade revealed that she wanted Britney Spears to feature on the S.A.D Version of her solo debut song "Angel Of My Dreams," calling it a match made in heaven.

4. "Apple Pie" by Fiestar

Melanie Fontana (who you may know for writing Glory's "Mood Ring"), told on a Reddit AMA that she thought of Britney when writing this song, but was very pleased when she knew K-Pop girl group Fiestar wanted it. "Apple Pie" became Fiestar's final single as they disbanded two years later; however, they made a reunion comeback in 2024 releasing a remake of their 2015 song "You're Pitiful".

5. "Bang" by Indra

Answering to a fan, songwriter Victoria Horn affirms that she once wrote two songs for Britney Spears: "Animal" and "Bang Bang". The latter seems to be the track "Bang" released by Swedish artist Indra (of French fame), included on her 2010 album One Woman Show.

6. "Bite You" by Lene

Confirmed by songwriter Angela Hunte via Instagram comment. The song was released by Norwegian artist Lene on her album Play With Me (2003).

7. "Blackout" by Heidi Montag

During an episode from their podcast The Speidi Podcast, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt go on to talk about the creation of Heidi's album Superficial (2010). Spencer reveals (min 19:13) that the songs Heidi got written by Cathy Dennis were all meant for Britney. Cathy counts with four entries on Superficial: "Blackout", "Fanatic", "Look How I'm Doin'" and "Turn Ya Head".

8. "Breathe Heavy" by BP RaNia

In 2017, songwriter Jon Asher revealed "Breathe Heavy" was originally pitched to Britney for her album Glory. It was inspired on the former Britney fansite BreatheHeavy.com. He would confirm it once again in 2020, during an odd campaign run after "Mood Ring" (which he wrote) was made available worldwide.

9. "Burn" by Jessica Mauboy

Songwriter/producer Jonas Jeberg confirmed to a fan that "Burn" was first pitched to Britney Spears. It was released by Australian artist Jessica Mauboy as the second single from her debut studio album Been Waiting (2008).

10. "Chocolate Love" by Girls' Generation / by f(x)

Originally titled "Top Billing Love," this track was meant for Britney, as The Guardian tells. Long story short: "Top Billing Love" is one of many reworks/offsprings of another song offered to Britney, called "Phony Lullaby." I don't have official source for this but it's an interesting story some insiders can tell in better detail.
"Chocolate Love" was released by both Girls' Generation and f(x) for a phone campaign.

11. "Cold" by Alex Young

Songwriter and producer Jonas Jeberg confirmed on an Instagram comment that "Cold" was written with Britney Spears in mind but that her team passed on it. It was given to Alex Young, who released it as a single in 2008 and included it on her debut album Amazing.

12. "Confessional" by Bryan Rice

In 2006, Bryan Rice said to Mamba Online he was lucky for getting this song since it was on hold for Britney Spears. This apparent Blackout reject also gave title to its parent album, Confessional.

13. "Down Boy" by No Angels

Writer of the song, Tiyon "TC" Mack, addressed the situation on the comments of an upload of his demo, saying it was originally for The Pussycat Dolls and Britney before landing with German girl group No Angels, who released it as part of their album Welcome to the Dance (2009).

14. "Drop It Low" by Ester Dean (feat. Chris Brown)

On a Los Angeles Time blog post article, the hits songwriter Ester Dean revealed Britney Spears showed interested on the song after Ciara didn't keep it. She decided to release it by herself with company of Chris Brown.

15. "EPILL" by Matty Marz

Independent artist Matty Marz explained in a 2024 interview that her song "EPILL" was originally written for Britney Spears after learning about the rumours of her working on new music (and having connections to the camp that was working on said potential alleged album).

16. "Fall Apart" by Sarah Connor

RuthAnne Cunningham admits to a fan that this song that she wrote was originally for Britney Spears. It later went to German popstar Sarah Connor, as track 10 on her album Sexy As Hell (2008).

17. "Fanatic" by Heidi Montag

Composer of the song, Ne-Yo, shared on REVOLT's Drink Champs podcast (min 1:27:00) that the song "Flaws and All" was being written for Britney until a friend of his presented it to Beyoncé, who snatched it and released it on the deluxe version of her album B'Day (2007).

19. "Get Outta My Way" by Kylie Minogue

In a 2010 interview, Lucas Secon says that "Get Outta My Way" was a song written with no one in particular in mind, adding that four different artists wanted to cut it as their next lead single. After a little rant about a fake interview, he gave the names of those four artists through his not-so-secret account on UKMix ("bonehead"): Pixie Lott, Britney Spears, Alexandra Burke and Little Boots. He'd confirm it again years later on his Instagram account.

Peter Wallevik also confirmed it to Gaffa Magazine, saying Pixie Lott and Britney's team were among the ones interested on the track.

20. "Girl Next Door" by Lucy Street

On Billboard's September 30, 2000 issue, journalist Nigel Williamson referred to "Girl Next Door" as "originally intended for Britney Spears' recent album" before being released as first single by Swedish girl group Lucy Street. The song was written by Jörgen Elofsson and produced by Per Magnusson and David Kreuger (people who worked on Britney tracks such as "Sometimes", "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "What U See (Is What U Get)").

21. "Good Girl Gone Bad" by Rihanna

On the podcast We Sound Crazy (48:22), Ne-Yo talked once again about his songs that failed to be recorded by Britney. This time, he addressed "Good Girl Gone Bad", which them became the title track to Rihanna's 2007 album.

22. "Goodies" by Ciara (feat. Petey Pablo)

While discussing the track on podcast Level Up Radio, Ciara said that she learned time after releasing the song that it could have been potentially being offered to other artists such as Britney Spears.

23. "Gotta Work" by Amerie

In 2007, Amerie said she had tried to work with Britney, but as it never happened, she kept the attempted song for her own album Because I Love It (2007). She doesn't mention the song by name but as she expressed "Gotta Work" is the type of song Britney should've come back on the same article, it's assumed that's the song first meant for Spears.

24. "Graffiti My Soul" by Girls Aloud

Composer of the song, Brian Higgins, told OMM (The Guardian) that before landing on Girls Aloud's 2004 album What Will the Neighbors Say?, "Graffiti My Soul" was meant for Britney. According to group member, Nadine Coyle, a Britney version exists, and producers Xenomania confirm it as well, but it may never see the light of day.

25. "Happily Never After" by The Pussycat Dolls

In mid 2007, writer of the song, Ne-Yo, said on radio show On Air With Ryan Seacrest that this track was one of the 6 to 8 songs he wrote for Britney. Since he received no further reply from Britney's team, he decided to give them away to other people. Although recorded by Backstreet Boys too, Nicole Scherzinger always saw the song as hers. Potentially for her then-scrapped debut album, the song ended being on The Pussycat Dolls' sophomore Doll Domination (2008).

26. "Hard Core" by Tom Malar

Producer Henrik Algren posted on SoundCloud a snippet of this song adding on the caption that it was a pitch to Britney Spears. It was given to Czech artist Tom Malar, included on his debut album Sexsational (2005).

27. "He Loves U Not" by Dream

When reviewing the track, Music Week Magazine (page 14) referred to it as "originally earmarked for Britney Spears". Hit Quarters also reported on it being on hold for Britney's second album before landing with girl group Dream, who released it as their debut single and took it to the #2 position on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

28. "Here I Come" by Jason Nevins (feat. Jen Cella)

Thanks to a promo CD found in Discogs, it could be known that this track was on consideration for Britney as it reads on the sleeve "Here I Come - Demo for Britney (On hold w/ Jive)". You may know Jason Nevins from some of Britney's remixes, including the Early Mornin' remix from B In the Mix: The Remixes (2005). In 2004, Nevins put out his album The Funk Rocker, including this song featuring Jen Cella.

29. "Hey Ma" by Pitbull (feat. Camila Cabello and J Balvin)

As Pitbull told to Radio.com, before being the soundtrack for Fast and Furious 8, "Hey Ma" counted with Britney Spears and Romeo Santos as collaborators. However, seems like the song originated with Akon, as a solo version of his surfaced online.

Very comprehensive with being replaced, Britney told Pitbull they could work together in the future again. Eventually, they'd team up one more time to record "I Feel So Free With You" (with Marc Anthony), a song that, like their first collab, ended being scrapped. Britney's version of "Hey Ma" leaked in 2017.

30. "Hollywood" by Jay-Z (feat. Beyoncé) / "Welcome to Hollywood" by Beyoncé (feat. Jay-Z)

During an interview at Capital FM radio station this past November 2023, Ne-Yo revealed a new track from the bunch he wrote for Britney. First released by Jay-Z as "Hollywood" with Beyoncé as guest, included on his 2006 album Kingdom Come. Later, Beyoncé released a new version with her as lead for the deluxe version of her album B'Day.

31. "Honey All Over" by Gruff Rhys

Approached to write something for Britney, Gruff Rhys came up with this track but never got to present it. On an interview with The Quietus, he said he encountered himself with what would be a writers camp session, where he didn't have the chance to show his song. Confused, he played the game regardless, but with no successful nor fulfilling results.

32. "Human Nature" by Zoey Tess

Zoey Tess said in an interview with Medium that "Human Nature" was written with Britney in mind. Zoey released it herself in 2023.

33. "I'll Be There For You" by Aïna Quach

Songwriter/producer Eric White Foster used to have some kind of online journal where he'd post about his work in process, including the recording of Britney Spears' debut album. On an entry dated March 2, 1998, he said he had written two new tracks for Spears: "E-Mail My Heart" and "I'll Be There For You". The first made it onto the album, while the other latter didn't. Going by song credits, "I'll Be There For You" found its way with Aïna Quach, who recorded it and included it on her 2010 album What I Want.

34. "I'm Sorry" by Chester French (feat. Wale)

D. A. Wallach, former lead of the now-disbanded indie band Chester French, shared back in the day in Twitter that their song "I'm Sorry" was initially written for Britney Spears but then decided to keep it, including it in their mixtape Jacques Jams, Vol. 1: Endurance (2009).

35. "Impossible" by Tiffany Evans

On yet another radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, Ne-Yo once again talks about the music he's written specifically for Britney's 2007 comeback, this time revealing a title and lyrics. As we all know and like every other song he intended for her, Britney didn't record it. However, it didn't take long for someone else to take the song: Tiffany Evans released it as part of her self-titled album in 2008.

36. "Kiss and Make Up" by Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK

After not making the cut to Dua Lipa's self-titled album, songwriter Chelcee Grimes told GQ that she pitched the song to other artists, including Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears, who all rejected it, considering the lyrics as "too young". Dua took back the song, added BLACKPINK in, and released it on the Complete Edition of her debut.

37. "Knockoff" by Poppy

Although he's not involved in the song and he's Poppy's ex-boyfriend with a lot of drama between them (so putting his words to doubt), Titanic Sinclair goes to say on one of his YouTube videos (min 1:06:29) that "Knockoff" was written for Britney, who would pass on it. Apparently meant for a 2018 project, Poppy finally released it in July 2023 as second single off her album Zig (2023).

38. "Lah Dee Dah" by Jo De La Rosa

Another song by Jo De La Rosa that songwriter Brian Todd admits to have originally pitched to Britney Spears. Also part of the 2008 album Unscripted.

39. "Licky (Under the Covers)" by Shontelle

Shontelle herself explains that this Sean Garrett-penned track was originally for Britney Spears (and also pitched to a few more people) before becoming hers. Although it got the music video treatment, this song was only included as a bonus track on the UK digital edition of her 2010 album No Gravity, and international just recently in 2022.

40. "Lies, Lies, Lies" by Toni Braxton

Produced by Toni's husband Keri Lewis, this song was going to be sent to Janet Jackson or Britney Spears but Toni heard it and wanted to tried it out, eventually including it in her 2002 album More Than A Woman.

41. "Like A Drug" by Kylie Minogue

As producer Cutfather tells, "Like A Drug" was first sent to Kylie's record label but didn't hear back from them. Re-directing it to Britney's team, the song was kindly rejected with the note that it was fantastic but that "it sounded like Kylie to Britney". Cutfather forwarded that same message to Kylie's label people, who suddenly expressed enthusiasm for the track. That way, "Like A Drug" became the first of 3 songs by Cutfather that made it into Kylie's 2007 album X.

Songwriter Bryan Todd confesses to have written "Look But Don't Touch" and "Seductively" for Britney Spears, both songs recorded by TV personality Jo De La Rosa and included on her 2008 album Unscripted.

44. "Look Who's Talking" by BoA

"Look Who's Talking Now" is a scrapped song by Britney Spears circa In The Zone era, written by Michelle Bell, Christian Karlsson (Bloodshy), Pontus Winnberg (Avant), Henrik Jonback and Spears herself. It was given to South Korean artist BoA, who included it in her 2009 English debut album BoA. Britney's version leaked in 2012.

45. "Love Is On" by Sharon Cuneta

Songwriter/producer Eric White Foster used to have some kind of online journal where he'd post about his work in process, including the recording of Britney Spears' debut album. On an entry dated April 14, 1998, he said Britney recorded two new tracks: "Autumn Goodbye" and "Love Is On". The former became a deluxe track included in ...Baby One More Time, while the latter didn't make the cut. Going by song credits, "Love Is On" went onto be released by Filipino actress/singer/personality Sharon Cuneta on her 2001 album All I Ever Want.

46. "Love Is War" by Shelly Peiken

Shelly Peiken is a songwriter who you'd may know better for tracks like "Out From Under" by Britney Spears, "B*tch" by Meredith Brooks and "What A Girl Wants" by Christina Aguilera. Aiming for an appearance in Britney's album Femme Fatale, Peiken explained in the Unleash Your Inner Creativity podcast (min 1:01:00) that she was told Britney backed out last minute from recording this song she wrote because it was too vulnerable for her. She did too in The Original Doll podcast (12:35). Pitched as an electroballad produced by Fraser T Smith, Shelly released her own version with just piano in her 2020 debut 2.0 etc..., where she sings the hits she wrote for others artists. She tells the story again in more detail in a blog entry in her website.

47. "Low" by Kelly Clarkson

Songwriter of the song, Jimmy Harry, tells Idolator that "Low" was offered to Britney and Kylie Minogue before finding a home in Kelly's debut album Thankful.

48. "Mind Games" by Twiins

When asked about it on Instagram, songwriter Bryan Todd confirmed that "Mind Games" was originally written for Britney Spears. It found a home on the 2009 album Compromise by Slovak duo Twiins, conformed by twin sisters Daniela and Veronika Nízlová.

49. "My Lover" by Mariana Ochoa

On an Instagram comment, songwriter Michelle Escoffery corroborates that this song was written for Britney Spears. It was then translated to Spanish and recorded by Mexican actress and singer Mariana Ochoa, member of musical group La Onda Vaselina (later renamed to OV7). Mariana released "My Lover" as the lead single from her debut solo album Yo Soy (2004).

50. "Must Be A Reason Why" by Shayne Ward (feat. J. Pearl)

Quite some story here. Let's begin saying "Must Be A Reason Why" by Shayne is what originally started as "King Of My Castle" by Britney. We first learned about KOMC in 2017 through the Instagram of song's producer, Lucas Secon, who posted a picture with some of his production credits. He already had the song listed on his production discography in his personal website. Later, it was presumed Britney's KOMC became Shayne's song due this song ("King Of My Castle '10") registered on ASCAP, which shared same songwriters than "Must Be A Reason Why" and obviously contained the king of my castle line. "King Of My Castle"/"Must Be A Reason Why" are based on a sample of the 1997 song "King Of My Castle" by Wamdue Project.

Anyways. "King Of My Castle" first leaked in June 2021 as a collab with Shayne. Later on it was discovered said version is not actually official. Britney's solo version leaked shortly after, and Lucas Secon cleared rumours on The Original Doll podcast, explaining Britney's official version lacked verses and that it was left that way so maybe a female rapper could fill them.

The song was apparently recorded in 2009, which fits this MySpace post by Lucas made in August 2009.

51. "Never Look Back" by Oliver Heldens (feat. Syd Silvair)

Oliver Heldens said on his channel Heldeep Radio (1:21) (also on Facebook and Twitter) that this song was supposed to be a collab with Britney Spears. Since it didn't happen, songwriter Syd Silvair was kept as the feature.

52. "Night Life" by An-Ya (feat. David Branner)

Writer Lil' Eddie reveals in The Original Doll podcast (min 40:20) that this song was written originally for Britney. Although it was later given to An-Ya, Lil' Eddie says his demo became a viral hit in Germany.

53. "Now Or Never" by Emilia De Poret

Confusing story here. "Now Or Never" is a reworked version of Britney's song "Out From Under". Doesn't really fit in this thread since 1) it's a version that wasn't pitched to Britney and 2) Britney did release her version. But anyways.

Although "Out From Under" was first released by Joanna Pacitti for the Bratz Movie soundtrack in 2007, songwriter of the song Shelly Peiken insists the song was always written with Britney in mind. She talks about the situation in The Original Doll podcast (min 4:03), but still her answer doesn't make full sense to me.

Emilia De Poret explains in an interview that the song was indeed for Britney but she decided to not record it at the time. Emilia, thinking she had her chance with the alt version, was notified months later that Britney recorded it for her new album Circus. "Now Or Never" was released in 2009, although she says that she recorded it before Britney. Could that maybe mean then that it was written for... Blackout? Shelly doesn't seem very time-conscious, so, maybe?... She thought Britney had just broken up with Justin Timberlake, after all.

54. "Nu ABO" by f(x)

During an interview with Monocle, producer Thomas Troelsen plays them his new song "From Lust Till Dawn", which is hinted as a potential cut for Britney Spears. Soon translated to Korean, it was renamed to "Nu ABO" and released by girl group f(x) as title track of their first mini album/EP (2010).

55. "On Top" by Alesha Dixon

Artist Bright Lights (real name Heather Bright, better known among fans for writing "Trouble For Me" and other Femme Fatale pitched tracks) tells a fan that "On Top" was a song intended for Britney Spears. Recorded by English singer Alesha Dixon, it appears on her third album The Entertainer (2010).

56. "Pit Of Vipers" by Simon Curtis

Released on his 2011 album RA, Simon Curtis said on his Twitter account that this song was first pitched for Britney's Femme Fatale.

57. "Pucker Up" by Ciara

On the demo by songwriter Kalenna Harper, you can hear the song opening with lyrics "Yeah, new Brit". Most likely a Circus reject, as producer Darkchild was doing stuff for.

58. "Pulse" by Brother + Sister / by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)

"Pulse" is a song written by Joseph Belmatti, Mich "Cutfather" Hansen, Remee Jackman and Lorne Tennant. It appears on ASCAP with Britney Spears as performer. It was released by Danish duo Brother + Sister in 2005, and then by OMD in 2010.

59. "Pulse" by Mandy Capristo

Songwriter Kasia Livingston (who you may know for writing Britney tracks such as "Unusual You," "Scary" and "Amnesia") says on The Original Doll podcast (47:07) that this track was intended for Britney's Femme Fatale. Co-writer Shelly Peikens confirmed it as well on her episode (11:15).

The song was given to Mandy Capristo, who included it on her 2012 album Grace.

60. "Question Existing" by Rihanna

After telling the story about "Flaws and All," Ne-Yo revealed on Drink Champs podcast (1:28:43) that "Question Existing" is another track originally supposed to be Britney's.

61. "Red" by BEAUZ

"Red Is The Color" was a song pitched to Britney for the Femme Fatale album (2011). On the podcast The Original Doll, both Katrina Borhan (also known as Forest Looper) (12:25) and Heather Bright, writers of the song, detail each on their side how the song came to be. Since it was never used, over a decade later, Katrina Borhan sold the hook to duo BEAUZ, releasing their version "Red" in 2022.

62. "Revolver" by Madonna (feat. Lil Wayne)

"Revolver" apparently knocked many doors before landing on Madonna's 2009 greatest hits album Celebration. Reportedly, Katy Perry and Flo Rida were offered the song, and songwriter Carlos Battey said (min 17:32) they pitched it to everyone, including Rihanna and The Pussycat Dolls. A fan went to ask if that also included Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue, to which Carlos replied confirming with "yes to everyone".

63. "Rock the Boat" by Momoiro Clover Z

Written by Nicole Morier and Greg Kurstin, "Rock the Boat" is a rework of Britney's scrapped song "Dangerous". Meant for Spears' album Circus (2008), it was reworked/translated to Japanese and released in Momoiro Clover Z's album Hakkin no Yoake (2016). Britney's version leaked in 2011.

64. "Save Me From Myself" by Nicole Scherzinger

This track is the second that Nicole took from the bunch Ne-Yo wrote for Britney, as he said on On Air With Ryan Seacrest. Nicole's album was shelved, so the song wasn't officially released.

Songwriter Bonnie McKee made a video with a "wheel of Britney demos". On it appears the title "Sayonara", a song released by Miranda Cosgrove in 2011 as part of her EP High Maintenance.

66. "Scandalous" by Queensberry

Farid Nassar, better known as Fredwreck, is a producer that worked with Britney during Blackout sessions, getting a cut on the album with "Ooh Ooh Baby", but that's not the only track they did together. He previously talked about recording three songs with Britney and has recently confirmed a second title: "Scandalous". It was also recorded by Hilary Duff, but ultimately released by German girl group Queensberry as part of their album On My Own (2009).

67. "Secret (Shh)" by Charli XCX

Jesse Saint John wrote Britney's song "Love Me Down," but it wasn't the first he did for her. He told GAY Times and BreatheHeavy that he wrote "Secret (Shh)" for Britney, who was interested on it, but Charli was quicker and released it on her 2016 EP Vroom Vroom. When breaking the news to Britney's A&R, he was told to just write a new one.

Songwriter Bryan Todd confesses to have written "Look But Don't Touch" and "Seductively" for Britney Spears, both songs recorded by TV personality Jo De La Rosa and included on her 2008 album Unscripted.

69. "See My Side" by Jordin Sparks

When discussing about Blackout for Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums podcast (30:08), producer Christian Karlsson, better known as Bloodshy, reveals there's a track called "See My Side" which Britney couldn't finish recording since it made her too emotional. It went onto form part of Jordin Sparks' debut self-titled album (2007).

70. "Sexy Sexy" by Charo

It's a story Charo loves to tell. Like in Oprah: her son was working on this song, theoretically for Britney, until Charo heard it and demanded him to give it to her.

71. "Shame" by Monrose

Pete Kirtley, writer of the song, recently appeared as guest on the podcast I Wish I Knew THAT About Songwriting, where he tells (23:39) how this song was on initial hold for Britney Spears. Recalling the chaotic times Britney was going through at the time, he says plans were scrapped and made the song to be pitched for someone else. It landed with German girl group Monrose, who released as their first single and enjoyed of big success in their home country, as it hit #1 on the charts.

72. "Somebody Stop Me" by Erica Rivera

Songwriter Luciana Caporaso confirms that this Bloodshy & Avant produced track was in fact considered for Britney Spears. Recorded by Erica Rivera, "Somebody Stop Me" formed part of the soundtrack for film 'What A Girl Wants' (2003).

73. "Speed Seduction" by Angel Faith

Christy Lauren is a prolific songwriter, member of the songwriting team The Matrix, better known for their material with Avril Lavigne, and that worked with Britney during In the Zone sessions. During her stop on The Original Doll with James Rodriguez podcast, she shared (min 1:10:53) this title as a song recorded by Britney but that unfortunately didn't make the cut. It was eventually recorded by Angel Faith, former artist and ex-member of girl group No Secrets, although I don't see it included on her debut and only album Believe In Angels... Believe In Me (2004).

74. "State Of Grace" by Christophe Willem

A favorite among Britney fans. Britney recorded this song but didn't include it on Blackout. Songwriter Steve Anderson was happy though that it ended with Christophe, who also recorded a French version, "Entre nous et le sol".

75. "Straight To You" by Twiins

Songwriter Bryan Todd assures a fan that "Straight To You" was originally pitched to Britney Spears. It was recorded by Twiins and included on their 2009 album Compromise, which contains another Britney reject, "Mind Games".

Second track on Wanessa's 2011 album DNA, was in fact written for Britney Spears, as the Brazilian singer confirmed so on live television.

77. "Sucker For Pain" by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons w/ Logic, Ty Dolla $ign (feat. X Ambassadors)

"Sucker For Pain" is a song used for the soundtrack of film Suicide Squad (2016). Probably recorded by many others too, a version by Britney leaked in 2022.

78. "S&M" by Rihanna

Songwriter Ester Dean revealed that she wrote "S&M" for Britney, but Rihanna came in the way. However, Britney later jumped on a remix of the song, taking it to the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100.

Almost used as promotion, this song was reported as a Britney reject time, after time, after time.

80. "Telephone" by Lady Gaga (feat. Beyoncé)

A very well known Britney scrap, especially after Britney's demo leaked online (producer Darkchild had a word on it) and became the most illegally downloaded song of 2010. Lady Gaga said it was written for Spears but that kept it to herself after it didn't make the cut to Britney's album.

81. "Tell Me What Your Name Is" by Ciara

Ronnie Jackson, better known as Lil Ronnie, admits to a fan that this song was originally written for Britney Spears. From his pitched tracks, only "Lace and Leather" was released by Britney, while "Tell Me What Your Name Is" went to Ciara, who included it on her album Fantasy Ride (2009).

82. "The Co-Dependent" by Sia

In a 2008 interview, Sia tells how she was dumped after her label wasn't into the "pop album" she presented them. She continued writing fun pop songs, submitting them to big artists, one of them being Britney Spears, who showed interest on the song "The Independent" (apparent original title or possible misquote?), but Sia wanted to save it for "The H Crusader", a project of hers that included cartoons and a comic book. However, The H Crusader never came to be, but three songs including this one were kept for her album We Are Born (2010).

83. "Tilt Ya Head Back" by Nelly (feat. Christina Aguilera)

It was already confirmed in 2004 by producer Dorian Moore, who said Britney's label passed on the track for being "too urban." Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera were the following options, being the latter who'd officially join Nelly. A full version by Britney leaked in 2021.

84. "Tricky" by Velvet Inc.

Songwriter Hanne Sørvaag revealed that this song was written for Britney before being given to Norwegian girl group Velvet Inc. (originally Velvet), who used it in 2009 to compete in Melodi Grand Prix, Norway's song election for Eurovision. Sørvaag explains the lyrics include references to previous Britney songs, which caused Universal to think it was too on the nose and to reject the track.

85. "Turn Ya Head" by Heidi Montag

During an episode from their podcast The Speidi Podcast, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt go on to talk about the creation of Heidi's album Superficial (2010). Spencer reveals (min 19:13) that the songs Heidi got written by Cathy Dennis were all meant for Britney. Heidi later adds (min 20:04) that Cathy thought of the song "Turn Ya Head" as the new "Toxic".

86. "Umbrella" by Rihanna (feat. Jay-Z)

Probably the most famous "Britney reject." Composer The-Dream would talk about it ever since the year it dropped, and a decade later as well. The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, pair that previously penned Britney's 2003 hit "Me Against the Music," wrote "Umbrella" for Britney, but got it returned by her label since Spears already had enough material for her album. They'd then pitch it to Mary J. Blige and Rihanna, it even was in hands of Taio Cruz for a minute, but it would be the Barbadian songstress the one taking it and scoring a global mega smash.

87. "Vertigo" by Remee & The Midas Touch

Remee Jackman and Thomas Troelsen were writing songs for Britney in 2003. After a first pitch was rejected for being "too pop", they came up with "Vertigo", which, according to them, was contender for Britney's lead single before Madonna came into the picture. They kept the song for themselves, including it in their album Fast Moving Consumer Goods (2004) under their duo act Remee & The Midas Touch.

88. "Was Ist Los?" by Sistanova

Sistanova was a German R&B girl group that debuted in 2007 with this very song. However, according to songwriter Nanna Martorell (who you may know for co-writing Britney's unreleased songs "Ouch" and "Money, Love and Happiness"), it was first pitched to Britney Spears in its English version "Worth It".

89. "We Are Family" by We Are Family Collective

In 2001, after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, legendary producer Neil Rodgers came with the idea of recreating the Sister Sledge's 1979 classic "We Are Family" as a healing message and to raise donations for the victims. He planned an all-star crew to record the track in two sessions, one in NYC and the second in L.A., and confirmed some artists names that were joining the project, including Britney Spears, Busta Rhymes, Steven Tyler and the Sister Sledge themselves. Apparently, the project faced some difficulties but was accomplished, with a different cast however: Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle, Eartha Kitt, Luther Vandross and Queen Latifah among the bigger names, but no sight of Spears. This recording then led to the We Are Family Foundation, a non-profit organization that funds programs to fight hunger and illiteracy worldwide.

At the time, Britney had just participated on the "What's Going On" tribute, a cover of Marvin Gaye's song by a collective of artists looking to benefit programs against AIDS in Africa, but that after the attacks, decided to redirect half of the song's proceeds to the September 11th Fund.

This would have been Britney's second rendition of "We Are Family", as she sang on the 1993 interpretation by the Mickey Mouse Club.

90. "What Do You Take Me For?" by Pixie Lott (feat. Pusha T)

Back in 2010, dubstep producer Rusko confessed he was commissioned to create tracks for Britney's then upcoming album. A year later, Femme Fatale was released but no song of his made the cut. He said to have made three tracks meant for the project and that they had already found a home, one going to Pixie Lott. From Lott's sophomore album Young Foolish Happy (2011), only one song is produced by Rusko: "What Do You Take Me For?", which served as the album's second single.

91. "What More Can I Give" by Michael Jackson & The All Stars

Just like Neil Rodgers, Michael Jackson also wanted to help victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Days afters the attacks, Jackson announced "What More Can I Give", a charity song with the purpose of raising millions for relief, sung by him and a multitude of stars, including Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter and Mya, and more soon to join.

"What More Can I Give" was a song years in the making that went through many stages. It was originally called "Heal L.A.", done during HIStory (1995) sessions, but only completed after a meeting with Nelson Mandela in 1999, where he got the inspiration for the now given title. Meant to be performed during his MJ & Friends concerts and also intended as a charity song for Kosovar refugees affected by the late 90's Kosovo War, the song was ultimately shelved. Resurrected and reworked after 9/11, it still took two more years for it to be released.

Britney, who initially committed verbally according to Jackson's representatives, didn't take part in the song.

92. "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls

Although evident with the producer's demo leaked time ago, this popularly known Britney reject was finally confirmed to be so by Theron James, writer of the song, in 2020. After reworked lyrics, it was recorded and released by The Pussycat Dolls in 2008. Not satisfied with rejecting the song, Britney also scrapped a cameo on the song's music video.

93. "When I Rule The World" by LIZ

According to artist LIZ, she had to fight to get this song back once learning Britney Spears was after it. It'd be the second SOPHIE-produced song (that we know of) that Britney showed interest in.

94. "When The Lights Go Down" by Gracie Valerie

In a recent AMA Reddit thread, songwriter Kasia Livingston brought up "When The Lights Go Down" as example of tracks she's written with Britney Spears in mind but ended being recorded by another artist. It was given to Gracie Valerie and released in 2011.

95. "Whiplash" by Selena Gomez

Included on Selena's album When The Sun Goes Down (2011), "Whiplash" was written by Greg Kurstin, Nicole Morier and Britney Spears. Spears recorded it during sessions for her Circus album, but ended not using it.

96. "Whole Again" by Atomic Kitten

This is a different case. "Whole Again" was released as a single by Atomic Kitten in early 2001 in the UK, meeting a career-saving success. Andy McCluskey and Stuart Kershaw, members of band Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark (OMD) and creators of Atomic Kitten and also main writers of their early music, revealed that so was the furore of "Whole Again," that offers quickly started coming by music executives trying to snatch the song, since it wasn't released yet overseas. Specifically, they name Clive Calder, co-founder of Zomba Group and Jive Records, who allegedly wanted it for someone of his label: Britney Spears and Céline Dion. They rejected all offers, planning for the song to become a worldwide hit for Atomic Kitten, but now, years later, they express regret seeing things didn't exactly turn out their way.

Producer Dennis Herring shared in Twitter the story about how he tried to get Britney to duet on this song, and how worrisome the experience turned out especially after the revelations from Britney's battle against her conservatorship. Since the collaboration got quashed, Ben Folds approached Regina Spektor, who gladly joined and added her own touch.

Drag queen Sharon Needles explains (0:40) that the music from this song was first bought by Britney Spears but then dumped. Needles picked it up, creating "Dressed To Kill" and releasing it as part of her debut album PG-13 (2013).

2. "Fuego" by The Cheetah Girls

The production of "Fuego" is the same found on Britney's unreleased song "Just Let Me Go" (also known by fans as "Love 2 Love U"), but with the "La Isla Bonita" sample removed. J. R. Rotem produced both tracks (you may know him from Blackout's bonus track "Everybody," which The Cheetah Girls also recorded).

3. "Shorty Wanna Ride" by Young Buck

According to O'Shea Jackson, Lil Jon offered the beat of this song to Britney Spears first but she rejected it. Later taken by Young Buck, "Shorty Wanna Ride" was created and released in 2004, becoming his highest charting song on Billboard's Hot 100 as a lead (#17).

According to songwriter Melanie Fontana, Britney's song "Mood Ring" was originally written as a collaboration between The Chainsmokers and Spears. The Chainsmokers rejected the track but kept the production reusing it for "Waterbed".

GGGB is literally themed from her fall from grace and no one talks about that.

 

Flaws and all would have been great for Britney. It's top 2 in my favorite songs from Beyonce's catalog.

When I Rule The World would have worked great with Brit. It’s like the Pretty Girls vibe, cutesy but obviously way better. Sophie could’ve made magic with Britney and put her back in the spotlight again for real. Such a damn shame. 

All these demos are shopped around to everyone. Nothing special about Britney and these songs were definitely not written "for her" 

So glad your thread came to fruition, @Jeremiah!  As I said before, so many people are under the misconception that Britney wasn't the Rih or B of her day where people made tracks specifically for her or she had first pick from the writing camp/CD of beats, and then the remaining songs were shopped around the industry if her team turned them down. She was the head honcho of 1999-2005. 

 

Only a few girls who accept songs/beats from others in the music industry had/have that "first pick" power: Dionne Warwick/Supremes (60s), Whitney (80s), Janet, Mariah (90s), Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele.

 

Reading through it now, and already appreciating the aesthetically-pleasing  color-coding.

I never knew that Question Existing was considered for Britney omg, it would have been perfect on Blackout. It’s one of my fave Rih songs but I wish Britney had kept it!
