Was “Sweetener” ahead of its time?

Featured Replies

When the album first came out most of the songs didn’t click with me so i decided to delete them from library, then out of nowhere i decided to give another listen after 5 years and actually liked it. Was Ariana’s Sweetener ahead of its time? Is it overhated? or is the hate justified?

Overhated? Yes. It's easily her best album.   Ahead of its time? No.

No. Horrible album and I'm saying this as someone who used to stan her

It’s easily her best album.

I liked it since 2018, but I’m glad more people are realizing it’s greatness, So yes I’d say it’s ahead of its time.

Overhated? Yes. It's easily her best album.

Ahead of its time? No.

Sweetener and Positions remain my least favorite Ariana albums so for me personally, the dislike is justified although I know some people like it too.

it’s her best album, but i wouldn’t say ahead of it’s time. it’s still a masterpiece :clap3:

It truly shaped the sound of modern poppy R&B.

Also almost everyone in K-pop is trying to replicate the sweetener sound nowadays.

If the era had stronger Y2K visuals it would be straight up prophetic.

I'm not sure I would call it ahead of its time, because none of those sounds on it really became that popular in the following years (trap was already big at that point). In fact, if anything a lot of the album feels very early 2000's, inspired by Pharrell's work with Kelis.

It's definitely her best album (alongside Positions but some of y'all are NOT ready for that conversation).

LOVE both her and Pharrell but. Her voice doesn’t work well with Pharrell’s production. his productions and mixes are too for her voice. His productions sound better with nasal or darker voices ie. Britney Justin and Beyoncé. Her voice works better with tommy and max

Ahead of its time, yes. But it's still a bad album, thanks to Pharrell's contributions.

Her best album: variety, depth and much heart in it. The production is colorful and it definitely channeled y2k better than a lot of the rehashes we’ve been seein it now. I absolutely love Pharrel contributions and unlike other fans I think Blazed and the title track are two of Ariana’s greatest moments ever

It's just a good album

But the sound of it is very of its time. So no

I enjoyed it then and even though I don’t use it now I can still bop to it. Sweetener and Successful alone :clap3: Masterpieces.
