J.Lo reigns as Romcom Queen amongst Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts & Reese Witherspoon

Featured Replies

According to research study by The Wrap:

Rom-coms arguably saw their heyday in the late ’90s and early ’00s. Now some of the stars who powered hit movies then are helping bring the genre back, and getting their own career boost in return.

Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts — actors who defined the genre back in the day — have all returned to rom-coms in the past year. All four have gotten a measurable lift in Parrot Analytics‘ Talent Demand score, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.

Audiences watching newer works are going on to revisit classic films — think Roberts’ “Notting Hill” or Lopez’s “Maid in Manhattan.”

After COVID the GP really must’ve said “give me some light hearted fun instead”. Congrats to these romcom queens for reviving a nearly dying genre :clap3:

She hasn’t released anything new. She is underrated though.

Those three movies alone especially “When Harry Met Sally” the only rom com was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, puts her in the rom com queens for me and plus QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

all those viral hate tweets couldn't stifle her success one bit huh :gaycat6:

No doubt. She is one of the most globally well-known actresses and some few goofy tweets aren't going to diminish her success as many people would like to believe:gaycat5:

I like French Kiss and Addicted To Love too.

A boring movie, she wishes she could act like julia or even sandra.

You misinterpreted the title and context of this thread. It wasn't a comparison in boxoffice numbers and critical acclaim amongst these acts. Boxoffice and critics numbers ≠ Parrot Analytics‘ Talent Demand score. It's concluding research on how J.Lo, Sandy, Julia and Reese can all be attributed to the rejuvenation of a forgotten genre. J.Lo comes out on top in terms of audience demand, which goes beyond just boxoffice numbers and critical acclaim.

Marry Me was boring but Second Act was a 10/10, as feel good of a romcom as it gets

JLo deserves more respect. She's a good actress.

Your provocative title suggests that you wanted to make it seem like J.Lo won some sort of "competition" through this study, so I pointed out other factors such as box office numbers and critical acclaim -- which suggest otherwise.

Both were bad. I liked Shotgun Wedding though.

Not like she's released any good romcoms in a while, but her peak of Shall We Dance, The Wedding Planner, Monster-In-Law, Maid in Manhattan were slays :clap3:

I don’t think there’s anything “provocative” about it. As for the “competition”, are you new to ATRL? We compare individuals here all the time with their peers, it ain’t new. Box office numbers and critical acclaim is just that, there’s more to the business to be successful which makes up someone’s demand.

You don't have to think it. You saying she reigns supreme amongst these rom-com stars suggests otherwise, especially when nothing of the sort is even mentioned in the original study you linked to. That study also takes into account social media, which JLo is all over, for better or worse. I'll take box office numbers, which shows who can put people's behinds into seats, over a study from Parrot Analytics.

The title of this thread, and me saying that, in relation to the context of the research by The Wrap / Parrot Analytics (and by watching the linear regression on that graph) does make sense, though. :cm:

Parrot Analytics is reputable and accepted by industry trades and created by executives within the industry yet it's not good enough for you. This topic is not about boxoffice numbers. We're living in the streaming age baby.

Parrot Analytics is a technology company that measures global supply and demand for entertainment content. Parrot Analytics’ technology has been developed by a team of data scientists and entertainment executives from DreamWorks Animation, Sony Pictures, MGM Studios and MIT Media Lab.

The company measures how much entertainment content is wanted by audiences around the world in today's attention economy; it has developed a globally standardized system to quantify global entertainment content popularity. Parrot Analytics tracks and maps global content across all markets and platforms at scale. The company’s audience demand data is used by producers, showrunners, studios, talent, television executives and fans alike.

Parrot Analytics’ demand measurement system incorporates a global audience behavior dataset and employs AI, machine learning, pattern identification and contextual techniques to synthesize petabytes of data from 249 countries into meaningful insights for global entertainment brands.

The system captures the modern-day entertainment and streaming consumer landscape of over 2 billion people globally that access the Internet to search for, read about, comment on, view, discuss and share content. These demand signals are then weighted and combined on a daily basis.

All that and it still doesn't change the fact that Sandra reigns supreme with box office and critics for their latest rom-coms. :cm: I'm glad J.Lo reigns supreme according to this specific study for Parrot Analytics' Talent Demand score.

Ok, and I’m happy for Sandra that she’s pulling those boxoffice numbers. I wasn’t trying to negate that fact. You just fail to see and downplay how the Talent Demand score is actually a positive thing and how demand for J.Lo is higher on that. Let’s agree to disagree. Haters will be haters.

They both haven’t released any romcoms recently. The research is about how high demand is for these lead actresses in recently released romcoms and how they helped reignite popularity of their older romcoms.

You knew what you were doing with that title and I decided to add additional data to the mix. Haters will be haters.
