That news comes straight from Disney, it is as official as it can get.

It doesn't make sense to wait an extra year to release the third movie when the second one is still fresh on everyones minds. At this rate I doubt 4 and 5 will ever get released.

We waited 13 years for Avatar 2 and it only worked in its favour as it built more hype. At least this way the Avatar films can remain big event films.
