omggggggg NOT BAEKHYUN

EXO is nothing without baekhyun

EXO's Baekhyun, Xiumin and Chen have ended their exclusive contracts with SM Entertainment and have taken legal action against the company for overdue payment and unreasonable deals.

Well...aespa and Red Velvet are safe...for now :gaycat6:

SM contracts have long been a mess. They stopped pretending that their artists "renewed" after the 7 year mark in recent years too. Because we all know they force their artists to sign a 3 year extension at debut to lock them in for 10 years.

Hopefully more tea comes out of this EXO-CBX lawsuit...

It's worse, they wanted 17-18 years for RENEWED CONTRACTS

In addition to making artists sign long-term contracts of 12-13 years, SM tries to get artists to sign renewal contracts with a min of 17-18 years.

this is crazy to me :deadbanana4: like is this even allowed

7 + 3 was already too much

well, I trust baekhyun, xiumin and chen I know they wanna give EXO-Ls a comeback so bad

but sm truly is trash. if they're treating EXO aka their biggest group after SNSD like this imagine the other smaller acts :biblio:

I hope to god aespa and nct aren't being scammed like this with their massive album sales, touring and digitals + worldwide popularity

also, imagine what's happening to other groups in smaller companies if SM can do this to EXO :mazen:

I'm guessing that actually, it might have been 2012-2022 (7 years initial contract, plus 3 year extension, all signed at debut), then in 2022 they signed another 3 year extension (which would total 12-13 years, Lay didn't extend and left at this point) but it seems SM wanted to force yet another extension which would bring the total up to around 17 years.

Legally SM can't create a single contract of longer than 7 years, because the law in Korea changed some time in 2013-2014 after TVXQ/JYJ's lawsuit and other legal problems with entertainment/slave contracts, which forced the government to restrict to a maximum of 7 years.

However, EXO Tao and Luhan's lawsuits (and Jessica's book) revealed that SM gets around this by making their artists sign extensions instead. A mess.

Yeah that timing is weird, but it's probably strategic, since they've hired lawyers and must have gotten advice. It seems like this has been building behind the scenes for months.

Kai's sudden enlistment seems even weirder now too, with this news.
