The world-building is genuinely very impressive.

Does anyone know then how long it took the original to reach $1B compared to this one? Would be an interesting comparison. 1 hour ago, Sugar-Rush said: Why did people even like the first one? It was so environmentally preachy and was basically like every other space/sci-fi movie out there in terms of plot and CGI, even by 2009 standards. Girl, the second movie was mid at best but let’s not sit here and pretend Avatar’s CGI/graphics back in 2009 was not groundbreaking. The problem with the second movie is that there hasn’t been any advancements since the first one, visually speaking and it’s been 13 years and other movies have now caught up.

Morissette Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 That's nice but the first movie still put me to sleep. Highly overrated.
nostalgia Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Thank you box office elixir Sigourney Weaver
luckythisway Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Another win for James Cameron & Kate Winslet

Hallad173 Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 It’s what it deserves. I can’t wait to see Avatar 3! The 2nd movie was a nice step up.

The name of the characters are virtually unknown but yet The Titanic character names are well known.
IBeMe Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Still going to underperform overall. People were estimating it could do as well as the 1st or just a little under. This will be cracking 2B but might cap at like 2.2-2.4B range at most
magazine Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 It trully is the juggernaut of cinema Talent won!

Yet the Na’Vi are instantly recognizable cinematic aliens like the Xenomorph, and the first movie made 3D movies/premium formats, immersive VFX and mo-cap performances standard elements of blockbusters to this day.

I did not see or read in any socmed that people said that it could do as much as the 1st one. And how could a 2b gross movie would be or considered an underpeformance?

It's an underperformance from the 1st. Does not mean it is a flop hence why I used the term "underpeformance" and trust me on box office oyutube they were estimating similar to Avatar 1 figures before the film came out. When it came out it became clear it would not touch or be close to the first one. In order for the movie to break even it needs to do 1 billion. This does not count the promotion costs which could be an immense 200M. In order for the film to start generating actual money it probably realistically needs to do over 1.2-1.4 billion which it will but ultimately its financial gains / profit won't be AS lucrative as the first nor as lucrative as some of those recent Avenger Films. That's all i'm trying to say tbh
skyandground Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Should surpass Top Gun very soon as the #1 grossing 2022 film...
Gossip_Boy Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 I know the "no one cares or remembers Avatar it’s going to bomb" crowd is shaking and moving goalposts as we speak.

A movie with no cultural impact wouldn’t have its sequel grossing 1 billion in 12 days with huge probability of grossing +2 billion. Also MOST people CANNOT name main characters of standalone movies with huge cultural impact. Like… if you ask some random person to name the protagonists of INCEPTION, DIE HARD, THE SIXTH SENSE, GET OUT, INDEPENDENCE DAY, THE MUMMY, PSYCHO, etc… they wouldn’t name a single character.
