Dumb question but why isn’t this masterpiece outgrossing the original? Is it because of the Avatar competition?

the way people were talking about this movie i thought it was a commercial flop but actually, it seems to be doing just fine and having good box office numbers. deserved. :penguin:

The first one had huge promotion this one didn't but it's having an amazing longevity.

This film was absolutely incredible. I'm not even joking, I'm so surprised they pulled this off but oh boy they did SO well.

Is this grossing half a billion dollars? Shook to the core.

It already left The Greatest Showman in the dust.

Wow it’s hitting $500M!!! And it started so slow in the box office but it build good WOM and people said no to Antman so this had a free path to make some bank until Super Mario.

Not dumb. Animation probably took the biggest hit from the pandemic.. with kids pretty much not going to theatres at all for two years straight. Combined with the epic push towards streaming services, Pixar's death at the cinema (by Disney focusing on Disney+), animation has had perhaps the biggest hill to climb to get back where it was. Still nowhere near before. Puss' performance is an incredible triumph in that respect as it has been on PVoD since last month.

Avatar competition was actually beneficial to Puss; we call it counter programming. Two crowd pleasing films that release simultaneously can actually help each other as if one movie sells out the other receives the spillover, or vice versa. Same thing happened in 2009, but with the films. Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks smashing at the same time as the first Avatar's legendary run. They both made over $200M domestic despite being in the shadow of Avatar.
