Wicked Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Saw The Boys, Harley Quinn, Upload & Werewolf By Night. Werewolf By Night was disappointing to me, I think I'm just over the MCU in general. Personally I had no issues with this season of The Boys except the finale, Antony Starr might be the best actor on television right now. Really don't know where Upload can possibly go next but I'll be watching. Waiting for that next batch.

ATRL Administrator Lee!! Posted January 13, 2023 Author ATRL Administrator Posted January 13, 2023 Lee's Best of 2022 Top 250 TV Shows #50 - #1 50) The Orville (hulu) This show had been off the air for a bunch of years due to its long filming process, shifting to a new network, and the pandemic. Now being at hulu, the show was allowed to be the show it always wanted to be. While at Fox, it was forced into being more comedic which at times felt unnatural and forced. Being free to lean into the drama even more, the real humor underneath was able to shine. It was a well done season that loved to tackle real life current events and issues with a sci-fi lens. The future of it is a bit dim, but should it ever come back for a fourth season, I'll be there! 49) Locke & Key (Netflix) (Last Year: 39) I have been so excited for this show after years and years of waiting for an actual adaptation to get on air. I was such a huge fan of the comic series while it was being published. This was a solid take on the ideas set forth, but was never the straightforward adaptation I had hoped for. While it had its moments of bleakness, it never really hit the emotional level the comic was able to get to. It was entertaining and I'm glad we were able to get a full series with the third and final season. Maybe one day I'll get a more straightforward adaptation, but I'm still happy we got this! 48) Ghosts (BBC One) (Last Year: 71) This season of Ghosts took the storyline in a new direction, dealing with even deeper emotions and events the ghosts had to deal with. It felt a bit more depressing at times, but it always has this bright edge to it. Even in the darkest moments, there was lots of humor and heart put into it. I was surprised when they said goodbye to a character in the middle of the season. It caught me off guard and was such an emotional episode seeing everyone deal with the fallout. It's such a reliably good show. I didn't get to watch the Christmas special yet, but I'm sure it was just as good as last years! 47) Only Murders in the Building (hulu) (Last Year: 54) This show is so compelling with its ability to make you want to learn more about each character. The mystery this season might not have been as strong as the first season, but it was entertaining the whole way through. Everyone commits to their characters, and we got to see different sides to them. It loves to throw red herrings at the audience, but it's not a bait and switch where you feel tricked. The set up for season three was interesting and it seems they will keep pulling even bigger names for the new season. I can't wait! 46) A League of Their Own (Prime Video) The classic film of the same name got a chance to try it as a TV series. It was full of so much heart and the way they leaned into social commentary of the times, yet still felt relevant to today. Great performances all around and it made it feel like its own thing. You can't help but root for these underdogs. The fact that it has been months now with no word about its future has me worried. It feels like everything that wasn't Lord of the Rings got no budget. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong and we get more! 45) Obi-Wan Kenobi (Disney+) This show has felt like a long time coming. It's been ages since we saw Ewan as Obi-Wan and the fact that we got to see Hayden reprise his role as well was a blessing. I never thought it would happen. It wasn't the most exciting story, but I absolutely enjoyed it. The star of the show was the young girl who was the absolute best part. It was also a surprise and helped carry the show. I would love to see her pop up again at some point. These Star Wars shows have been entertaining and I hope some day we can revisit Obi-Wan again. 44) Starstruck (HBO Max) (Last Year: 24) This underrated comedy series was such a charming and funny surprise when the first season premiered. It follows a young woman who ends up in a romantic situation with a famous actor. He loves being around her because it helps bring him down to earth and feel like a normal person. The season is a back and forth of getting themselves lined up for the right moment. It's full of unexpected depth and the humor is always on point. It was renewed for a third season, but who knows what will happen with it being on HBO Max. 43) Close Enough (HBO Max) (Last Year: 17) It's amazing that this show got three seasons at all. It was initially set up at TBS but moved to HBO Max to build up its original content. The new season was just as funny as the rest and really found its groove. It was Regular Show on steroids. Simple premises ended up going in wild directions and always made me laugh. Unfortunately it was purged by HBO Max effectively canceling it. Which is such a shame. It deserved to air for many more seasons. At least we got the ones we did despite all the odds! 42) The Lake (Prime Video) This show didn't get much promotion and I only heard about it from a friend who told me it was right up my alley. The show follows a man who takes his daughter who was given up for adoption on a vacation to learn about their roots. When he arrives he finds out his step sister is now living in his family's lake home. He attempts to come up with a way to get the rights to the house from her. He and his daughter team up to try to take her down. Julia Styles was delicious as the complicated villain of the story. She was enjoying every moment of it too. It was renewed for a second season and I can't wait to see what comes next. 41) American Auto (NBC) (Last Year: 161) Last year we got a two episode preview of this awkward comedy series. It is a workplace comedy like Superstore that takes place at at the top of car company. The executives are all a mess and the situations they find themselves in were so awkward and so funny. Wrong decisions somehow worked enough to get through the day. The performances all around we spot on. I don't get how they all didn't just start laughing in the middle of scenes. I was so happy when it got renewed for a second season. It will return in a few weeks and the cliffhanger was amazing so I cant wait to see what comes next. 40) She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (Disney+) This was such a different direction for Marvel and I loved it. I knew going in that having Tatiana as the lead was going to work out amazing. She was the perfect balance of humor, heart and drama. I even loved when she would break the fourth wall. I mean where else could you get a character like Madisynn to bring out the funniest parts of a character like Wong. I wish we got more case of the week episodes, and maybe if we get more in the future they would show more of those. I can't wait to see where She Hulk shows up next. 39) Dead To Me (Netflix) I was surprised when it was announced that this show would be ending with its third season. It seemed like there could be more funny and emotional scenarios for the two to keep going on with. As I watched, I realized it was the perfect place to end the show. It was full of raw emotion, and the funniest situations which seem absurd yet fitting. The relationship between Judy and Jen was the biggest draw. Their ending was emotional and felt true to them. I'm so glad I was able to watch this show over the peak of the pandemic. I can't imagine missing out on this! 38) Never Have I Ever (Netflix) (Last Year: 19) After two seasons it seemed like one of the relationships they were building to was finally going to happen. Then a few episodes in things changed and I was caught off guard. The back and forth with Devi's love life could have gotten annoying but it somehow worked. She is clearly torn still, and as always, reeling from her emotional trauma. It has lots of heart and the humor is what you get with a Mindy production. I love it. I will be sad that the show is ending with the upcoming fourth season but I am enjoying this ride. 37) High School (Freevee) This show is an adaptation of Tegan and Sara's memoir. It is a coming of age show following two twin sisters reeling with lots of emotions and feelings. It shows their relationship with one another, their parents and a group of friends they build at their new school. It was raw and grounded. I loved the natural progression of the characters. It felt like they were actually in the 90s. They were able to flesh out characters with ease. Hopefully enough people watched it and Amazon Freevee announces a second season. The season one finale feels like it just stopped in the middle of a sentence and I want more. 36) All American: Homecoming (The CW) This spinoff of All American followed Simone as she went off to college. We see how strong of a character she is to carry the show after being a bright spot on the original series. I like how it tells more of a story about college than the original. The characters are all tied to different callings like dancing, baseball, and tennis. We see how they grow in their fields but also as people outside. It's full of juicy drama and deals with a bunch of serious topics that I wasn't expecting. Hopefully it will survive The CW's scripted series purge. I want to keep following these characters. 35) Solar Opposites (hulu) (Last Year: 23) This comedy series is in the vein of Rick and Morty but has its own unique voice. It follows a family of aliens who are stuck on Earth despite wanting to leave. They also love being on Earth despite their constant protests. There is also in in universe storyline involving a group of humans who got shrunk down and live in the wall at the alien's house. We got another holiday special this year which was hilarious. It has already been renewed for more seasons and I can't wait to see the scenarios they find themselves in. 34) Moon Knight (Disney+) This Marvel series is the first to take a pretty dark tone. All the series before it were more family friendly or at most PG 13. Oscar did an incredible job with all the different personalities. He made each one unique and they each stood out. It was full of lots of intrigue, mystery and had a different story than the rest of the MCU. You didn't have to have the MCU background the other series require. It felt fresh and the wait for new episodes was hard because I wanted to know what came next. There has to be a followup because they spent all this time building up these characters and it'd be a shame if we don't get to see them again. 33) All American (The CW) (Last Year: 16) The original All American series continued to tell the stories of this group of friends, self named the vortex because of how often they all get sucked into each other's issues and drama. There is more focus in this series as it has more history to build off of, and is mostly focused on football and music. Each character has really grown over time. It needs to do a better job making them feel like actual college kids because at times you forget they are in college. It still baffles me how every one of the members of the group is the absolute best in their field, but you just get used to it. Also they need to move on from JJ. That storyline is a mess and it's only going to lead to dark path. 32) The Gilded Age (HBO) I was a big fan of Downton Abbey and I've been looking for a series to fill that void since it ended. This series is a followup from the show's creator, but this time takes place in the US. It follows a group of high society individuals in the late 1800s. I love seeing the way New York City once looked. It's full of many great characters, but some are clear copies of similar Downton Abbey characters. You can't help but be drawn in weekly. The performances are all stellar and the story gets to the rougher corners of the time. I also like how it highlights a black family who is well off for the times and how it goes against what we think we know about the time. I can't wait to see what comes next and the drama they find themselves in when season two premieres. 31) Blood & Water (Netflix) (Last Year: 27) What a ride this season was! It was even more dramatic and caused me even more anxiety. I liked that most of the storyline took place out of the high school setting. It felt more adult, despite them still being high school aged kids. They took big, bold swings, and they all paid off. It wrapped up a major storyline, but at the end we find out only sets up even more story to come. Hopefully Netflix announces a fourth season soon because I need more. I haven't really watched many South African series or shows that feature African languages so it felt special and wouldn't have gotten the reach it gets were it not on Netflix. 30) Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Netflix) I didn't know what to expect from this anime series. All I knew about Cyberpunk was the giant mess of a game at launch. Who know something so compelling and visually stunning could come from it. The story ramps up fast and gets intense. Its a harsh look at a future where things get rough to be a regular person and the lengths they will go to get heir own shot. I was surprised at how finite the finale was. It was twisty and brutal and beautiful. The creator said they could revisit the world one day but it'd be a different story. I really hope we get to visit this world again. It really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! 29) House of the Dragon (HBO) This Game of Thrones followup series is a prequel, telling the story of the Targaryens before the house falls. It shows the early cracks in the different sides of the family, and the mistakes they all make despite thinking their choices are the right ones. I didn't love how fast the show burned through time. We had multiple time jumps and aged up characters. I wish we could have lived in these moments longer. Some of the acting was amazing. It was a big step up from the final season of Game of Thrones and hopefully it doesn't fall into the same traps as the original as it goes on. 28) The Sandman (Netflix) I read the graphic novels years ago. Once it was announced it would get an adaptation, I was extremely excited. The casting was on point. Everyone committed to their characters. I loved how the first part of the series was individual stories, introducing the characters. I didn't love how the end of the season was all one long story. I still enjoyed every moment of it. I don't understand how anyone could be upset with the direction it took. It was so entertaining to me! Thankfully Netflix renewed this one, and we even got a bonus episode which was a pleasant surprise! 27) Ms. Marvel (Disney+) I've loved Kamala since Marvel introduced her in the comics. The original comic run was exceptional so there were high hopes for me going into this. Iman truly brought Kamala to life. I enjoyed the riff on the origin story. It had to be changed since the MCU doesn't really have Inhumans, at least at this point. It made it feel fresh and I love how much they tied the real life story of the Partition as a major driving factor. It had heart and humor and I'm so excited to see Kamala again when The Marvels comes out. 26) Grand Crew (NBC) (Last Year: 122) I had high hopes for this comedy series when it previewed early last year. The two episodes were a great sampling, but once the rest of the season aired this year, I was cracking up. It follows a group of friends who frequent the same bar and the situations they find themselves in. They have great banter with each other and I always feel like they are truly friends. It was always funny and loved that it was an entirely black group of friends. They just announced a premiere date for season two today and I cannot wait for March for it to come back! 25) Paper Girls (Prime Video) This was another comic book series I was very excited for. The comics deal with a group of girls who find themselves traveling through time, caught in a war they never knew was happening around them. The show followed most of the same stories from the comics. There were some minor changes, but I welcomed them as it gave it a fresh twist. The one thing that was disappointing was that the budget was clearly not that much. Big moments felt big enough, but not to the extent I expected them to be. Unfortunately Prime Video released this ahead of Lord of the Rings and it didn't gt much promotion. It was sadly canceled after one season. The young girls all did a great job. It should have been as successful as Stranger Things. Maybe one day someone else will take a crack at this. It has so much potential! 24) Tuca & Bertie (adult swim) (Last Year: 33) Tuca and Bertie, Bertie and Tuca. This show was such a great look at the minds of two young women who have a lot going on. They're struggling with choices they make, outside forces, and mental issues that they don't always work through properly. It was sad yet found the humor in some darkness. This season saw both Tuca and Bertie (and Speckle!) take some steps forward, looking out for their own well being, not always having to please everyone. They weren't perfect, but did their best. It was the second season to air on adult swim after the first aired on Netflix. Unfortunately, it was canceled. I will miss having these birds in my life. 23) Kotaro Lives Alone (Netflix) What a masterpiece of an anime. This series followed a young boy who moved into an apartment, living on his own. With the help of his neighbors, he was able to navigate his young life without too much sadness and disappointment. It had so much emotion packed in when you least expected it. There were dark moments, as to why he is alone, and how he is essentially hiding. Every character that crossed his path grew for the better. Episodes featured multiple slice of life moments which were real and super adorable at times. Kotaro is such a great character. I need more episodes. I think it was adapted from a manga so there are potentially many more stories they can adapt. 22) The Sex Lives of College Girls (HBO Max) (Last Year: 31) I loved this season of this show set at a fictional college. It followed the same group of girls as they navigate school life, social lives, and love lives. They often make terrible decisions, and there is often a lot of missed communication which could spare everyone from some heartache. The series likes to move past big moments often without much reflection on the past. People get into relationships as quick as they get over them as quick as they then grow feelings again. Season two ended in some darker places and I know they'll all be addressed when the series returns for season three. 21) Star Trek: Discovery (Paramount+) (Last Year: 9) I've been a huge fan of Discovery since it premiered. Over time, it's adjusted and become the show it wants to be. I wish there was more focus on the "discovery" part as they have gone big picture storylines instead of weekly stories. This season there was a big threat, that I didn't love as much as I wished, that they were able to work out, despite people making wrong decisions. I did not like some of the paths they took characters on, especially since they took some past the point of redemption. They also randomly benched characters, probably covid related but who knows. There was often a lot of build up that took time to get interesting in each episode. Hopefully next season will be balanced better and I enjoy the story better. 20) Pantheon (AMC+) This little animated series was able to create such a big story in such a short time. The world building was incredible. I think that fact that this is an idea which isn't that out there, that could one day be a future for us, was scary and made it feel real. A young girl begins to receive messages from her dead father. This leads to a big thing involving AI and what it means to be a human. There was a grand conspiracy and they took it to a place I didn't expect to go in a debut season. The show produced a second season, but AMC shelved it to cut costs. So as of now we'll never see how things play out in a second season. That exists. That they just won't air... Such a shame. It was so impressive. I can only imagine what comes next. 19) This Is Us (NBC) (Last Year: 36) This Is Us was able to craft a pretty perfect final season, giving each character a fitting sendoff. We got to see the moments they flashed forward to in previous seasons all line up. We got to see some incredible acting. Mandy Moore was robbed of an Emmy for her work. They all delivered their A game and gave wonderful performances. It was emotional and oozed heart from everywhere. There was just something special about this series that I don't think another will be able to replicate. They were a real family. I will miss this one and remember it fondly. 18) Bridgerton (Netflix) (Last Year: 25) I think I loved season two more than season one. There was so much freaking chemistry between Anthony and Kate. They were magnets drawn to each other. It was hypnotic and sexy and such a pleasant ride. I wish we got to see more scenes of them and their relationship. At least they will both be returning for season three, unlike a certain character, and hopefully will see more of their story, despite them not being the main focus of the upcoming season. Did I mention it was sexy as hell? Chemistry off the charts. There's also a spinoff about Queen Charlotte coming this year. Give us a Kanthony spinoff you cowards! 17) Link Click (Crunchyroll) I never heard of this series until Crunchyroll announced they dubbed it this year. This anime/donghua followed two friends who had special abilities to visit the past. One could make sense of a period of time just from looking at a picture. The other could jump into the body of a person in the image, reliving their life at the time of the picture. They help people figure out things from the past, or give them closure. They end up caught up in a bigger conspiracy which ramps up quickly. Do their visits to the past alter too much? There are so many questions and the cliffhanger at the end was wild. I cannot wait for season two this year. 16) Russian Doll (Netflix) (Last Year: 10) I didn't get to watch season one until last year, but it was worth every second. This second season we got this year was just as unique and quirky, but the story didn't hit the highs of season one. Season one tackled the idea of reliving a moment of your life, and making the changes you need to survive the day. Season two deals more with generational trauma, reliving the lives of a relative, and dealing with those events as they relate to your own. It still felt special and the humor remained, balancing the tougher bits. I really hope we get at least another run at this universe as these characters still have room to grow and learn from other twisty events in their lives. 15) SPY x FAMILY (Crunchyroll) This anime was absolutely adorable, and action filled, and full of mystery and intrigue. The series follows a spy who has to create a family with a wife and kid to try and infiltrate and reach a target. Little does he know, the child he adopts can read minds, and the woman he marries is a trained assassin. This leads to some funny moments, as well as some great spy/assassin stories. The first cour I enjoyed the most, getting to know these character. The second cour got more into a rhythm that didn't feel as special, but I still enjoyed thoroughly. It was renewed for a second season as well as a movie. In the mean time I may have to read the manga to get my fill! 14) Three Busy Debras (adult swim) This live action series follows three young women, all named Debra, who spend way too much time together in the town of Lemoncurd where the most absurd things happen to them. The whole series feels like a satire and does a hilarious job as making these over the top women go through the funniest things. Episodes essentially reset, having not learned a thing from their past encounters. Everyone in town is just as strange and they are used to the weirdness as normal. If you love Wet Hot American Summer, it has the feel of it with the most over the top things being grounded. The show was not renewed for a third season and I will miss the Debras. 13) Heartstopper (Netflix) Everything about this show was adorable. You couldn't help but root for these kids. You wanted them to work out together. You wanted them to be happy. You wanted to just give them the biggest hug when things were going wrong. It was grounded and heartfelt. There were deep emotional moments. The style of the show was cute and echoed the young budding relationship. I was so happy when the show was renewed for two more seasons! There were hints about one storyline which worried me involving a likely eating disorder. They put them there intentionally so hopefully they treat that storyline well. I have no doubt they will. They got everything else so right so far! 12) The Expanse (Prime Video) (Last Year: 6) The final two episodes of this incredible series aired this year, giving the crew of the Rocinante a fitting ending. They take on Marco and his rebels, deal with the fallout of all their choices and continue the twists until the very end. Despite this being the final season, there were small moments that could have been expanded on, or in the future if they wish to continue telling this story. The book series continued beyond this moment, so there's always an opportunity down the line to begin again. I really hope so. I still miss this show so much. Such a great story and group of strong characters. One of the best. 11) Aoashi (Crunchyroll) This is the third and final soccer themed anime I watched this year, and clearly, my favorite. The series follows an impressive forward who gets the opportunity to join a youth league, with the hopes of becoming a professional soccer player. The show could have been an ordinary sports anime, but there was just something more elevated about it. I loved the way they went into Ashito's head while he was playing the game, hearing his thought process, and seeing what he sees in the seconds between each moment of the game. There was a giant twist leading into the second cour which surprised me and left me so impressed. Manga readers knew what was coming, but going in blind, I felt it was a bold choice. The other characters were really interesting too. I loved the friendship/relationship between Ashito and Hana. I just wanted the two of them to realize their true feelings towards one another. There is still so much story to be told. I really hope we get a second season. 10) Abbott Elementary (ABC) (Last Year: 170) What a great comedy this became over the year. The pilot episode aired as a special preview last year, hence my lower raking. it started off solid, but truly became a heartfelt and funny show over time. Each character got into a great rhythm. You felt them each come alive. We also got to learn more about their pasts and why they are the way they are. We also see how they really care about their jobs as teachers. Plus there are incredible moments throughout with great character interactions. You can't help but love every character. Even when they're over the top, or making silly decisions. The show was just renewed for a third season which makes me so happy knowing we get even more time with all of these characters. 9) Made in Abyss (HIDIVE/adult swim) Made in Abyss was my favorite anime series of the year. The first season came out years ago, but it wasn't until adult swim aired the first season in their Toonami block that I got to check it out. The animation style and early episodes threw me. It seemed like a kids show with an edge. There were adult moments that caught me off guard but I didn't know how crazy is was about to become. Once they begin their decent into the Abyss, things get crazy fast. Brutal horrific moments occur. The story was able to embrace this chaos and violence, and turn it into something beautiful. After the first season aired, I watched the followup movie, which is vital to the story, and connects the two seasons. It was one of the most intense, horrific yet beautiful things I watched all year. We also got the second season premiere, which aired on HIDIVE. I watched it weekly, loving every moment of the new story which stayed in the same place as opposed to the first season which saw lots of different locations. It was just as heartbreaking and emotional. The second season also began airing on Toonami, but by that point, I had watched the whole second season. So good. So impressive. I really hope we don't have to wait too long for more. The story has just begun. 8) The Owl House (Disney Channel) (Last Year: 5) The Owl House is such an impressive show, especially for one targeted at kids. It is able to create a timeless story, one that can be enjoyed by kids and adults. It's hopeful and looks for the best in everyone. But it also shows the darker sides of things. Not everything goes the right way, despite putting your all into it. There are betrayals and twists and heartbreaking moments. It also features a great story about two girls falling in love. They do not shy away from it, which you might expect as a Disney show. It feels so fresh and real. Season two ended on a crazy cliffhanger. The third and final season will consist of three 22 minute specials with the second set to premiere this month. I do not want to say goodbye to all of these characters. 7) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+) This Star Trek series felt so fresh and just the kind of Star Trek show I was missing. It features the crew on the Enterprise, creating new stories we've never seen as it takes place before the original Star Trek stories. It features Captain Pike, as well as Spock, and Number One, played by the same actors who played them on Star Trek: Discovery. We all know Pike's inevitable fate, as does he, and he tries to do the most with his life while he can. You see him deal with knowing his future, and balancing having a normal life, doing his job. It feels without a doubt like Star Trek. The show was renewed for a second season and I hope we get it this year! 6) Hacks (HBO Max) (Last Year: 2) Season two of Hacks was just as good as the first. We see Deborah and Ava together on the road, taking Deborah's show to new places. We see their relationship strain and grow, helping to make one another better people. Jean Smart is an incredible actress and gives such a great performance in this role. It can be silly at times, but it all makes sense. The balance of some of the side characters felt more sporadic and I found myself wanting more of them. Towards the end of the season, they are able to strike a better balance. The season ends on a bittersweet moment, which could have easily been a series finale moment, but luckily, the show will be back for a third season. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long for it. 5) Better Things (FX) There was a gap between season four and season five of Better Things. The whole season deals with the idea of moving on. It shows Sam, her kids, and her mom all reaching turning points where they can move on to their next step in life, or decide what is best for them. The show has always been a love letter to Hollywood. It always shows locations as characters, or even behind the scenes of Hollywood as reality. It has always been a quiet show, but is able to make great moments out of them. Simple discussions can turn into debates and life moments, imprinted forever on these characters. It also looks into the family's past as a way of moving forward. I was so happy with how things ended. It was emotional to see it end, but I was glad to see it go out, still on top, on its own accord. I will miss this understated show. 4) Stranger Things (Netflix) I've always loved Stranger Things, but this season felt even more special. Maybe now with the kids being more grown up in real life, they felt even more rounded. Some of the performances from the kids were the best of the entire series run. The storyline may have separated the group into smaller groups, but pretty much each one of them felt vital to the bigger picture. Knowing we're heading towards the endgame now, each moment felt bigger. There was tons of character growth. there was a lot of heartbreak as well. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters. Lucky for us, Netflix has already confirmed the world of this show will continue. There were reports that an anime series is in development. There will also be more live action series to come likely. Bring it all on. The wait for the final season will be rough but I'm sure it'll all be worth it. 3) Andor (Disney+) This show was one of the best surprises of the year. Who knew a Star Wars prequel series about a rebel character in a prequel one off movie could reach the heights it did. All of my expectations about this show were far surpassed. I loved how the series was able to take us from an unwilling rebel into one ready to burn the entire Empire down. The way they were able to build his character, break him down, and give him purpose was genius. It shows just how a rebellion against fascism and oppression can begin. The Empire has never been scarier. We always see them as "bad" for being bad. Or Stormtroopers who are inept at firing their blasters. This makes them something to be feared. It also did a masterful job of showing how a government that should be keeping power in check can be ineffective if it turns a blind eye. It felt important and timely. I enjoyed how almost every three episodes were their own mini story. They felt bigger than a show and more like a movie. I'm so happy we will be getting a second season, but it will also be a final season. The series was originally envisioned as a five season story, but the rest will be packed into one. Its sad knowing the fate of Cassian, but its amazing to know and learn all that he did in this time period. Bring on season two!! 2) The Bear (hulu) I did not have this show on my radar at all. it felt fresh, and down to earth, taking a simple premise, and adding layers and depth to it. We got raw emotion, passion and a love for storytelling. Small moments made the biggest impact. We see how this small restaurant grows into something special. The employees may start off begrudgingly on this new journey, but each grows so much. There is one episode which stands out even more than the rest that is entirely filmed in one shot. It's shorter than the rest, but it is all one concise and neat story towards the end of the season that only builds with tension as it goes on. The acting is on point. Everyone sells their role easily. I loved the twist at the end of the season and it makes me really excited to see what this show can continue being when it returns for a second season. Hopefully we get it this year. I'm dying to see what comes next. And the #1 TV show of 2022 is.... 1) Better Call Saul (AMC) There was no show better than the final season of Better Call Saul. It may even be a better show than Breaking Bad. The final season is a masterpiece that connects the two shows flawlessly. It pays homage to the story its been telling the entire run so far. We also got to see the future fate of Saul, in the events which came after the end of Breaking Bad. The writing? Perfect. The acting? Incredible. The directing? Genius. The choice of colors in scenes, the placement of characters in the frame, everything came together into a perfect and fitting ending. It was a masterclass all around. You felt worried for characters not knowing their fates. You felt relieved at how things turned out. I could not have asked for a better work of art. Kim Wexler and Jimmy/Saul embarked on a love story of all times. The decision to lean into their relationship over the cartel storylines was such a brilliant choice. I will miss Kim and Jimmy and Mike and Gus and everyone else. Thank goodness Bob was able to film these final episodes after his heart attack. He truly gave it his all. The fact that this show still has no Emmy wins is a crime in itself. We'd better get one with this final round of episodes. Well it's been another great year for TV and I look forward to doing these lists again next year! Hope you found something new to dig into!

ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 13, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted January 13, 2023 ah yes finally stuff I know! Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was quite nice, especially visually, but I felt at times that the story developed too fast, also for someone who is not familiar with the games, but I think it managed to have a few nice touches on social issues. Felt a bit like a sort of Lost in Translation I think at some points. Heartstopper was meh for me. I think it is incredibly overrated on social media. While I do appreciate the sweet moments, and it had some highlights, it was too cheesy for me.

How even do you guys find so much time That's an entire show per day. Honestly, I thought I watched less this year and was so surprised with how many I ended up with! I just always have something on lol On 1/12/2023 at 2:31 AM, Wicked said: Saw The Boys, Harley Quinn, Upload & Werewolf By Night. Antony has been on my radar since the amazing Banshee years ago. I'm so glad people can see how good he is with this! On 1/13/2023 at 8:48 AM, Sunderland 4ever said: 1) Better Call Saul (AMC) There was no show better than the final season of Better Call Saul. You forgot Riverdale - season 6 was a hot mess but so fun to watch If you liked past seasons of Titans, S4 is probably fine, but I've struggled to enjoy it for most of its run lol Ditto Stargirl! Batwoman deserved S4 but again, we don't speak ill of Simone + co :p SARAH LANCE DESERVES BETTER I like the slow burn of Chenford so I'm not opposed! (again I'm behind so I don't know whats happened since the Vegas stuff) I'm not usually bothered by recasts, as long as the story holds up so bring on Jonathan 2.0! I enjoyed S1 of Riverdale, S2 was a struggle, and when babies started floating in the S3 premiere, I bounced. 22 hours ago, Legend E said: ah yes finally stuff I know! The cheese is what made Heartstopper so endearing! lol
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 14, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted January 14, 2023 Quote The cheese is what made Heartstopper so endearing! lol I mean yes, to some extent, but after a while the cheesiness got old and tiring. I also LOATHED those effects with the drawings

Remmy Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Top 25 songs~ Bad Omens is an interesting choice for 5SOS, one of the few songs I can't remember at all from that album nn. Black Mascara. Same Team No One Dies from Love + 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) are both huge bops, wish they would've been hits as well. Shows~ Everything I watched made the top 107 Peacemaker was decent, I loved The Suicide Squad and was expecting it to be funnier. Watched all the MCU series/specials and Werewolf by Night was my favorite for 2022, followed by Moon Knight. She-Hulk had some issues but it was super overhated. Ms. Marvel had an amazing premiere & then unfortunately lost me along the way.
