This is why people are mad Ariel was race swapped.

The OP lady made several points. These live action remakes are completely unnecessary.

However this :mrpeanut: controversy :mrpeanut: has/is going to just make this film 10x bigger. Remember how live action Mulan just came and went and nobody even cared... Even this latest Pinocchio movie

She actually made several points. If only people took the time to listen to a WOC giving her opinion on the matter...

I'll support and watch The Little Mermaid because I like the original movie, but I'll never stand up for race-swapping of already established characters. It's a lose-lose situation for everyone involved because it erases the legacy and representation of a character that is already known and loved by millions of people and puts the "new version" of it (and its community by extension) in a really bad spot because of all the hate that comes with that decision.

At the end of the day, race-swapping a character is just a lazy move and does more harm than good. Everyone would be happier if Hollywood focused on creating new, original stories for POC because we've seen that people do enjoy and support representation in media when done well.

The idea of "race-swapping" is some racist bs that has no place in modern society.

They’re mad because they’re racist. It’s as simple as that. It really doesn’t matter to the story at all if this fictional mermaid is black or white. The only impact it will have on the film is making little black girls feel special when they see someone that looks like them on screen.

People are only thinking about themselves and the present. Like why was Ariel white to begin with? She was white because the people that created her believed that was the standard of beauty. Now, in the society we live in we're slowly changing beauty ideals. Like you said, black girls watching Ariel will be able to gain a sense of connection and belonging. Something that was extremely limited back then. So it is just a conscious effort to start changing beauty ideals. Of course there is so much more to it, but this is a start!!!

While not all of the people upset about this are racist, I’d say at least half are. Especially if they’re still mad about this all these years later.

Move on already, Ariel is black and that ain’t  changing. Hopefully the movie is a success for Halle’s sake because Disney took a big risk casting her.

Why are people even mad about a live adaptation of a fairytale, it's destined to be crap either way

well... isn't it a good thing for this movie

Ariel has a human face and fins instead of legs. You know this...

Disney didn't choose an actress that didn't resemble Belle though. Can you imagine if they race-swapped Aladdin, Mulan, Moana, Black Panther?

Ariel is a fish :rip:

this remake would definitely make 1B at the box office, but now with all the hate i'm afraid it's going to tank

I wish the best to the actress, she does NOT deserve the hate she is receiving.

Extremes are always bad.

-Yes there are a LOT of racists, but not all...

-the egomaniacs who feel superior because "they accept everything instantly and those who don't, are wrong, racists, it's just a cartoon, everyone is wrong for not accepting it quickly"

-many don't like it but they don't spread hate, they will like the movie when they see it, because there are people who need time to process that their favorite character has changed for this adaptation, nostalgia factor is strong, and you should not make fun of that "they are adults, is just a cartoon, just a fish"

Extremes are always bad, we have to wait for the movie to come out and see it, and give an opinion.Unfortunately, the future of this movie does not look good, it could be a failure, I hope I'm wrong, that's why we have to wait, more trailers too.

It's because she's black. It's that simple (and that pathetic).

I just hope Halle can ACT tbh. we know she can SING sing, but she'll get SHREDDED by reviewers if she can't act the part and people will again call it racism

just an overall messy situation.

This and if the film flops, Halle will be the one thrown under the bus.

For those who are interested in Halle playing the role, we really need to show out for her.

I cant believe so many care so deeply about a ******* MERMAID being played by a human being that happens to be Black.

If only u guys were as passionate about politics, human rights, economy, ur ******* job... its borderline deranged to make such a big deal out of this

I get both sides. But why wont they create an original storyline with a poc mermaid.

Isn't that Elizabeth Olsen promoting Wandavision in your avatar? The series were she plays Wanda Maximoff who is supposed to be Jewish Romani but changed to to a white women from a fictional Eastern European country.
