ATRL Moderator khalyan Posted September 25, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted September 25, 2022 The original US Queer as Folk is campy and not meant to be taken seriously. And this new version took away all its joy and tried to make it into a serious drama that it was never meant to be.

ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted September 25, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted September 25, 2022 I didn't watch it. But, I think trying to sell a show as a reboot of QAF when it's very different from the original US version is just odd and contrived. I think series need to try to stand more on their own. Fans of the original aren't going to stay with a very different show just because it shares the same title.
Pop Life Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 (edited) The writing was so forced and contrived and none of the characters were likeable. Everybody just stomped around regurgitating parodied twitter call outs at each other on sets that looked like Euphoria rejects It also had nothing in common with the show it was named after, which garnered plenty of ill will from the start. toanythingtaboo Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 (edited) Not surprised. Haven't seen/heard anyone talking about it. Think the reality is that QAF's appeal was audacious gay raunch that occasionally touched on serious topics. Not a serious show exploring the full LGBTQ experience. Sure, it needed to grow up a bit...but it just needed to be a reboot which kept some original characters, and introduced a new class of younger ones. People would tune in for the nostalgia as well as the raunch. Off the top of my head - Debbie runs the diner, taking one or two 20something queer characters under her wing, Justin (married to new character, maybe a politician which introduces those issues) now runs the art centre which brings us more 20/30something queer characters, and then you have further 20/30something queer characters working as go go boys/drag queens/bar staff at Babylon. Hell, you could even have Brian as the distant owner who is teased and then eventually returns from NYC by popular demand for a cameo. Then you've got a diverse 2.0 group who can be the focus and dealing with everything from apps to gender identity to racism, as well as an older generation with the 1.0 cast...but it's still QAF. Psylocke Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 If only they worried about making a good show instead of checking boxes.
