Mariya Takeuchi Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 The undead population of Sunnydale can breathe a collective sigh of relief as a new slayer won’t be rising anytime soon. A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this time featuring a Black actress as its titular heroine, has been in development since 2018 — but executive producer Gail Berman says the project is now “on pause,” as revealed in Friday’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV’s Top 5 podcast. Original series creator Joss Whedon was also aboard this reboot as an executive producer, with Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) serving as writer and showrunner. Owusu-Breen previously wrote for ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where Whedon was an EP as well. The reboot, which was referred to as “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original,” never had an official network home. There was some confusion, however, about whether the show would be a straight reboot or some sort of revival. Shortly after news of the reboot broke in 2018, Owusu-Breen stated that the original show’s beloved characters “can’t be replaced,” adding that she “wouldn’t try to” replicate the “brilliant and beautiful series.” Instead, she suggested: “The world seems a lot scarier [today]. So maybe it could be time to meet a new Slayer. https://tvline.com/2022/08/19/buffy-reboot-cancelled-black-vampire-slayer/ Are you happy with this news? I am! Midnight Texas was terrible and the cannon established makes a reboot completely unnecessary. Goodbye to you, buffy reboot!
Mikeymoonshine Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 Good this sounded awful. I would be here for a sort of revival happening without Wheedon involved. Imagine SMG as buffy mentoring a new slayer. Something like that would be great but whatever this was sounded like a mess.
Crank_It_Up Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 Sorry, but thank GOD. The original was a masterpiece and cannot be touched. After all, they ruined Charmed so I wouldn’t want the same for Buffy.
Haus Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 I’d love a properly done reboot with a minority main character, but Joss should not be attached, sorry.
Danny789 Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 (edited) I’m not opposed to returning to the Buffyverse, and Fray is the obvious way to go. There’s so many talented writers that worked on the show. We don’t need Joss just get Marti on board as EP and I’ll feel safe. Edited August 19, 2022 by Danny789
Power love Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 (edited) Why can’t they just do a spin-off with a already establish character? Eliza Dushku looks fantastic still. Same with Emma caulfield. So many actors age so well that it could totally happen. Edited August 19, 2022 by Power love
toy soldier. Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 I wouldn't mind a new series following a new slayer, but none of the cw corny stuff please. That charmed reboot was awful
Cameltoe Chariot Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 When are these Hollywood hacks going to realize all anyone wants is a spin off series where an older Buffy is training/working alongside a new, younger slayer like this would be so easy so make and I'm 100% sure SMG would sign on if Whedon wasn't directly involved.
Cherish Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 Put it back on the networks in proper 4:3 remastered 1080!

All of this! It's RIGHT THERE...
Gossip_Boy Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 The series doesn’t need a full on reboot. There’s plenty of awakened slayers to pick from and that way you can do the whole soft reboot shtick of having characters from Buffy show up as mentors/allies to the new slayer.

Umm, I don't want to post spoilers in here, but have you seen the Buffy series finale?

zaso Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 this is one of the rare shows that actually needs a reboot. i really want to watch it cuz the story is intriguing but the outdated effects makes it unwatchable

It’s not like this is Charmed. Buffy holds up well tbh except for the first season.

Spoiler Anya could easily be brought back as a ghost or demon or some sh1t if they really wanted Emma Caulfield back. They already brought back Buffy twice.
Venom Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 I didn’t even know this was planned. Good. I don’t want a reboot that will erase anything of the original characters of the Buffy tv series. It needs to be a sequel that’s in the same universe as the original and doesn’t touch those characters. seems like this one was planning on doing that but it’s scary to let random writers do something with this after what they did to Charmed. I lowkey think that what happened to Avatar: the Last Airbender needs to happen with Buffy. Avatar Studios was created to explore different timelines, projects, and spin-offs of the Avatar. Are we ready for Buffy Studios? Buffy the Vampire Slayer Studios????
Nano Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 People in here talking about how much they love the original while trashing Whedon in the same sentence... OT: Great news.

StarsAllAligned Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 A win Buffy doesn’t need a reboot because the show is so good on its own that you can just rewatch it as soon as you finish, which reminds me that I need to start my annual watch
