Songs with deeper meanings than at first glance?

He Wasn't Man Enough is the first that comes to mind. From the title alone, you'd think it's about a man who isn't masculine enough for Toni Braxton.

But in reality, he's not man enough for her because he wasn't faithful and a man is someone who's faithful.

… What are you thinking?
Did you know about us back then?
Do you know I dumped your husband, girlfriend?
I'm not thinking 'bout him
But you married him
Do you know I made him leave?
Do you know he begged to stay with me?
He wasn't man enough for me

Any other examples?

Not really a "deep" meaning, but Party in the USA comes to mind.

When I was younger, I thought it was about another LA celebrity partying it up in America. As I listen to the song now it's about the exact opposite-- a girl who feels like a fish-out-of-water because she's used to country living and not LA/city-living. And hearing songs she heard in her hometown made her feel like less homesick and out of place. "Party in the USA," my guess, is referring to how music spans all 50 states-- you can be listening to Britney in Nashville, LA, New York City, Baltimore, Chicago, etc. Music is what carries throughout the country. And it's what makes Miley feel less alone wherever she travels. Great song.

I recently found out “Waterfalls” by TLC is about AIDS/HIV. It took me 7 years after hearing that song on Scream Queens for the first time.

Guess that’s an example.

grimes - delete forever

i always thought it was just a breakup song and recently found out its "about losing friends to the opioid crisis and the self-hatred that arises when the grieving process mimics the behaviors that cost your friends their lives."

i doubt it, it's lyrics are very surface level

OT: Like a prayer by Madonna. It's lyrics appear to be quite religious at a first glance, and seem to be about worshipping God through prayer and feeling his power while at a deeper glance, the lyrics are a euphemism about oral sex

Multiple Ariana songs especially post 2018, they have darker undertones.

Bloodline for example, which seems like a lighthearted bop is about her not believing in love anymore after Mac/Pete "I ain't looking for my one true love, that ship sailed away".

Imagine too, I guess not everybody gets that those aren't just break up songs.

Xtina's Little Dreamer sounds like a sweet message to her son but if you look at the lyrics it's apparent that she's singing to a dead child.

"The journey that we shared but now have to leave..."

"

"Now I lay me down to sleep I pray we meet inside my dreams. If I should go before I wake, I pray our souls will join again"

it's never been confirmed but it's been speculated that Xtina had a miscarriage before Bionic's release and it eventually lead to her divorce.

How was I supposed to know chile ? I guess I never really paid attention to the lyrics.

I still don’t get the chorus of the song :

“Don’t go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.”

It’s definitely a metaphor for a certain message but I have a hard time figuring it out.

Pink Toes by Childish Gambino and Jhene Aiko.
at first I thought it was a really cute move song about « rainbows and sunshine », but it’s about a drug dealer selling cocaine and his girlfriend :toofunny2:

a classic one is Pumped Up Kids, once you focus on the lyrics , you realize how dark this is

I usually don't get songs talking about drugs use instantly like "Can't Feel My Face", "The A Team", "Hotel California", etc

It's basically telling people not to engage in risky behavior for the thrill of it, especially if they're not ready for the potential consequences/harms.  That's why the examples in the song/video are people becoming drug dealers and having unprotected sex.

("Chasing waterfalls" always sounded to me like it was about nature-watching.  It took me a while to realize it was actually about going over them on like a boat or kayak lol)

Oh wow that’s a great analysis. I understand what the song tries to convey now. I feel so dumb for not getting it sooner chile. Like I said previously in this thread, I didn’t know at first that the song tackled HIV/AIDS specifically throughout all the figures of speech used in the lyrics. I guess I know now why it’s such a classic/staple not only in TLC’s catalogue but in general. They did that :clap3:

Thanks for your insight btw !
